Although there's no 'on field' action for Saints this weekend, we've managed to make the most of a quieter period by getting some 'off field' reaction.

Yes, in our third 'Red & White Insight', Saints CEO, Martin Semmens, kindly agreed to catch up with ourselves again.

TSP136 sees him reflecting on a number of topical subjects including Saints reaching the summit of the Premier League, keeping Ralph Hasenhuttl, player contracts, fans returning to St. Mary's, the '5 subs' rule, Danny Ings recovery, takeover progress, coverage of the Women's team and more!

Hopefully it'll go some way to 'filling any void' until the Wolves game arrives!

Definitely!

Lets just hope if we do get taken over that Semmens is kept in role.

Also seems like he is tight with Ralph.

Gotta love this pod- great interview and so encouraging that the club are allowing the key men to speak to the fans and answer questions with integrity... and on a a fairly regular occasion. I was intrigues by Martin's comments about the 5 sub rule and the way he addressed bonuses for success- which I hope will be paid out a lot this year!

Thanks again Ben and co

After yet another international break, Saints return to Premier League action this week with a tough looking trip to Molineux.

We therefore preview the fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers ending, as per normal, with a range of varied score predictions!

Alongside that, TSP137 sees us reflect on Oriol Romeu’s new contract (25:35), highlight a great initiative being run by Saints DSA (Disabled Supporters Association) and celebrate a couple of birthdays (including Saints turning 135 years old!).

Lastly, in the latest ‘International Supporters Club’, we welcome Gjermund Vik from the Norwegian Southampton Supporters (32:50).

Gjermund talks about the history of one of Saints most northerly (and oldest) supporters’ groups, his own memories of watching the Club over the years, his friendship with Claus Lundekvam and more!

Not for the first time at St. Mary’s, it was late heartache against Manchester United this weekend. But let’s not dwell on that too much....

While James Ward-Prowse added to his successful quota of free-kicks, Jan Bednarek extended an unwanted, personal record!

As per normal, we try our best to work through the key talking points of a game that, once again, toyed with every emotion.

TSP138 also covers the impending return of fans (albeit in small quantities) to the Premier League (22:45) and previews Saints next fixture, a visit to Brighton and Hove Albion (34:45).

Fingers crossed that Saints get 'back on track' at the Amex!

  • 2 weeks later...
Ralph Hasenhüttl celebrated his second anniversary as Southampton manager with a hard-fought, 2-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion.

The victory also saw Saints become the 11th Premier League representative to achieve 1,000 points.

Ben, Steve and Glen discuss the key talking points from the match – including Jannik Vestergaard’s (or VesterGOD!?) dominant performance…..and VAR!

TSP139 also includes the panel’s thoughts on Ralph’s 2-years in charge (25:20), Jan Bednarek’s new contract and previews Sheffield United’s visit to St. Mary’s next Sunday (49:15).

In addition to all that, the latest ‘TSP – International Supporters Club’ sees Bharathvishal Maheshkumar join the Pod to chat all things ‘Southampton FC India’ (32:30)

Thanks to a dominant performance throughout, Saints ruthlessly put Sheffield United (‘The Blades’) to the sword this weekend. The game ending 3-0.

We reflect on a win that saw Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side move to 23 points from twelve Premier League games.

TSP140 also includes the latest ‘Red & White Insight’ feature, with Greg Baker (Head of the Saints Foundation) dropping in for a chat about 2020, as well as a look ahead to next year (26:20).

With a busy pre-Christmas schedule now underway, the Pod also previews two tough-looking fixtures for Saints over the next seven days - firstly the trip to Arsenal, then Manchester City’s visit to St. Mary’s (49:00)

A bonus episode you say?!?!

Maybe some advertising is required:

In modern day footballing terms, few stories navigate the emotional rollercoaster more than that of Rickie Lambert.

From beetroot factory to beating Scotland, Lambert proved to become one of our greatest ever signings.

In this special, pre-Christmas edition of Total Saints Podcast, TSP141 sees Ben Stanfield catch up exclusively with ‘Southampton’s goal machine’.

Conversation covers Lambert’s arrival at St. Mary’s, working with Alan Pardew, Nigel Adkins and Mauricio Pochettino, fitness and nutrition, winning at Wembley, proving doubters wrong, arriving in the Premier League and THAT England goal!

In an extended episode, enjoy a unique chance to hear from a footballer who was quite simply adored by everyone who loves Saints.

It was a case of ‘what might have been’ for Saints this week – with a frustrating draw at Arsenal followed up by a disappointing loss to Manchester City.

However, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side proved in both matches just how far they’ve come, giving more than competitive performances against two of the ‘Big 6’.

The four of us get together for one last time in 2020, reflecting on the significant moments from those games.

TSP142 also includes a preview of the upcoming Christmas fixture against Fulham and West Ham United (43:00), as well as the now traditional TSP Christmas Quiz (31:00) – but which panel member comes out victorious?

Well.....we've made it!! What a year its been.

Despite many of us having various day-to-day battles to try and overcome, Saints have at least provided some consistent joy throughout 2020.

I've tried to reflect on their progress - on and off the pitch - via the latest Total Saints Opinion.

Happy New Year!

Yes, TSP kick-off 2021 by reflecting on a ‘what might have been’ Christmas period for Saints.

Two 0-0 draws – against Fulham and West Ham – bringing a couple of points, but not much excitement!

We discuss some of the more interesting elements of those matches – including Saints manager, Ralph Hasenhüttl, having to ‘work from home’!

TSP143 also includes previews of the Premier League fixture with Liverpool (23:15) and the FA Cup tie with Shrewsbury Town (38:15).

Ahead of that St. Mary’s 3rd Round match, Ollie Warner (Host of Salopcast) drops in to give a more detailed ‘opposition view’ on Steve Cotterill’s League One side.

It was a result that had Ralph Hasenhüttl on his knees at full-time (thankfully, in a good way!).

The Austrian, with tears of joy flowing into a well-established beard, saw his young Saints side – missing several key players – secure a hard-fought victory over Liverpool.

In this bonus, mid-week 'bite size' episode, TSP143b sees us reflect on some clever set-piece work, Danny Ings 50th Premier League goal, numerous matchday Academy graduates and Hasenhüttl’s own post-match emotion.

Its not often you beat the Champions, so a moment to treasure for every Saint around the world!

With Saints FA Cup tie against Shrewsbury Town delayed (at least for now), TSP144 sees the regular panel start by answering some Patron questions.

We cover a variety of topics including the January transfer window, the long-term future of Ralph Hasenhüttl’s ‘SFC playbook’, lockdown TV/book recommendations and more!

Despite an ongoing desire to make TSP as professional in its production as possible, the first-batch of 2020/21 outtakes also rear their ugly head (46:30) – proving things don’t always go to plan (especially when you’re the host!).

Lastly, ahead of visiting the King Power next weekend, there’s a preview of the Premier League fixture with Leicester City (54:55).

It just wasn’t Saints’ night!

Despite undoubted effort, a threadbare squad and lack of creativity ultimately saw them lose 2-0 to Leicester City.

The TSP panel join forces once again to pick the bones out of that King Power fixture.

Having reported a £76.1m pre-tax loss, TSP145 also delves into Saints latest 2019/20 financial results (59:15 - if you're particularly interested in that sort of thing!!).

There’s discussion on FA Cup rescheduling, Shrewsbury Town (a preview of that game can be found in TSP143) and the potential now for two ties in five days (79:35).

Lastly, TSP’s latest International Supporters Club features Trevor Foy – the President of the Southampton Australian Supporters group and one of the key cogs in the Global Saints community.

Trevor chats to Ben (29:45) about life ‘down under’, the evolution of SAS, how he’s helped connect Saints fans around the world, Guly de Prado and more!

Saints secured their place in the FA Cup Fifth-Round, thanks to a well-deserved victory over current holders, Arsenal.

Despite having to manage the world-class threat of Cedric Soares (and his ‘phenomenal crossing’….!), Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side showed plenty of energy and commitment throughout.

Ben, Steve, Glen and Dan (Sheldon) reflect on the 1-0 win, alongside previewing Tuesday’s Premier League clash with The Gunners.

TSP146 also includes a look at this week’s hummel (new kit deal) announcement (37:25) – reigniting a 30-year love affair with Saints – as well as Ghanaian side, Asante Kotoko SC, joining our International Club Partnership programme (39:25).

Finally, there’s the latest view on Danny Ings ‘will he won’t he’ contract situation - aka ‘Ingsgate’ (44:25)!

VARstrating? VARcical? VARiable? VARking annoying(!!)? Call it what you want….!

Yes, while Saints could have played better against Aston Villa, VAR (….and the humans operating it!) once again stole all the headlines.

Despite a large amount of post-match emotion, Ben, Steve, Glen, Dan Sheldon (The Athletic) and Simon Peach (PA Media) do their best to exchange professional opinion on handballs, offsides, injuries and more!

TSP147 also covers Monday’s deadline day (41:40), a lesser-spotted transfer request (47:15) and the latest TSP Fantasy Premier League standings (40:00).

Lastly, ahead of tomorrow's trip to Old Trafford, there is a preview of the Manchester United game (52:35).

Having had so many enjoyable weeks during the first half of the season, the past seven days are better best forgotten if you’re a Saints fan!

Saturday's 3-2 reverse at Newcastle United saw Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side record five Premier League defeats in a row for the first time since 1998!

TSP148 sees the regular panel try to come to terms with yet more defensive woe, this time at St. James’ Park.

The Pod episode also includes thoughts on a very topical question right now – VAR decision making. A TSP patron asks whether or not discussions (between on-field and Stockley Park officials) should be made ‘public’ for all to hear – thus helping to better understand the eventual outcome(s)…..or not?! (30:30).

Lastly, ahead of back-to-back games with Wolves – firstly in the FA Cup and then in the Premier League – there is a preview of this coming week’s action (41.55).

In true Saints style, it’s been a week of two halves!

Having beaten Wolves in the FA Cup on Thursday – which set-up a Quarter-Final tie with Bournemouth – the Midlands side then got their revenge in the Premier League. The latter was Saints sixth league defeat in a row (an unwanted Club record!).

We discuss the more notable moments across both games – including Mohammed Salisu’s debut and a belting volley from Danny Ings.

TSP149 also includes the latest International Supporters Club. February’s edition comes from one of the sunniest countries in the world (thankfully – as we could do with a little sunshine at the moment!). Panos Grigorakakis, from the Greek Saints, drops in for a chat on all things Hellenic (35:45).

Finally, there’s a preview of next weekend’s fixture against Chelsea, as Thomas Tuchel brings his new side to St. Mary’s (46:50).

TSP celebrate their 150th episode in true Saints style!

During the course of Southampton Football Club’s 135-year history, one moment still stands out above any other – the 1st May 1976.

It was the day Saints upset all the odds to beat Manchester United and win the FA Cup.

The man behind that success was Lawrie McMenemy – and he joins TSP150 to chat exclusively about a 50-year love affair with the Club.

Speaking with Ben Stanfield (Host) and Glen de la Cour (League One Minus 10), Lawrie recalls first joining Saints in 1973, Terry Paine frustrations, the famous FA Cup run, his Wembley memories, that Bobby Stokes goal, the subsequent homecoming, stunning world football by signing Kevin Keegan, Rupert Lowe and much more!

It’s 90 minutes of unique opinion and storytelling by Southampton’s most successful ever manager.
