Hi Everyone,

Hope you're keeping well and having an enjoyable 'off season'.

With the return of football not too far away now, I'm delighted to say that, due almost entirely to the outpouring of encouragement for Total Saints Podcast to continue, we'll be back next Monday (31/8) with our first Pod of Season 2020-21.

Glen and Steve will again be joining myself (Ben) this year, as will our newly secured 'regular weekly guest', Dan Sheldon (now of The Athletic).

We look forward to sharing our/your thoughts and opinions on Saints each week, as the 'roller coaster' kicks into action once more.

We've also created a brand new website - www.totalsaints.co.uk - should you like to check it out at any point.

Anyway, I'll continue to add the Pods/links to this thread every Monday morning (UK time) - rather than individual episode posts (which didn't seem the preferred approach last season) - should you wish to listen.

Hope you enjoy them/us and fingers crossed for another successful season under Ralph.

Catch you soon,
B

Due almost entirely to the brilliant support and encouragement of our loyal listeners, Total Saints Podcast is back for 2020-21!

This first episode of the season (which hopefully doesn't include too many cobwebs!) sees the newly confirmed TSP panel – Ben, Steve, Glen and The Athletic's Dan Sheldon – once again going to the heart of all things Saints FC.

TSP126 conversation covers the upcoming Premier League campaign, a few dodgy predictions, the Saints' fixture list, some ‘sponsoring issues’, Dan’s recent move to The Athletic and much more.

If you'd like to listen then you can find it via any of the below links (or your preferred podcast channel):

Can you smell that? Yes, the new Premier League season is just around the corner now!

TSP127 sees your regular TSP panel preview Saints first game of the new campaign - away to Crystal Palace. Given Saints dreadful opening day record, can they secure anything from Selhurst Park? Listen in and hear what the guys have to say.

This TSP episode also includes the first edition of ‘Red and White Insight – life inside our Club’, featuring Saints CEO, Martin Semmens (35:00).

Mr Semmens talks about a number of successes and challenges within the Club over recent times, including the impact of Coronavirus, securing Ralph Hasenhuttl to a new deal, potential contract extensions for key first-team players, sponsorship issues, the Saints Women’s team and more.

This week, ahead of the disappointing 1-0 Premier League defeat at Crystal Palace, Total Saints Podcast spoke exclusively to Saints manager, Ralph Hasenhüttl (23:00).

In a brief catch up, Ralph spoke about his hopes for 2020/21, how important James Ward-Prowse has become, the new 4-year deal and…..cows and mountains!

Featuring your regular TSP panel, the episode provides further analysis on that frustrating opening day loss.

Alongside all the above, TSP128 covers a potential American takeover of the Club (or not…), previews the Carabao Cup fixture against Brentford and also looks ahead to Spurs visit to St Mary’s (33:30 onwards).

Good start to a Monday morning listening to that, thanks. I didnt agree with Dan that their keeper didnt make any difficult saves, the one from Che was breathtaking as it was close in and at pace. That was really unfortunate, Ings header was a good save but not as testing I would agree.

We're only a week in.....yet the tranquility of the summer break already feels like a distant memory!

Its been a tough start to the season for Ralph Hasenhüttl’s men. Defeat to Crystal Palace has now been followed up by the Carabao Cup exit (vs Brentford) and a humiliating second-half capitulation against Spurs.

TSP129 sees us trying to pick the bones out of a frankly horrible start to 2020/21 - focussing particularly on this new 'high line' at the back!

Prior to previewing next weekend’s trip to Burnley (36:00), Francisco Fourcade ('Southampton FC Argentina') also joins the Pod this week, as he helps kick off our new ‘TSP - International Supporters Club’ feature (27:30).

You can file Saints first victory of the new Premier League season, away to Burnley, under ‘ugly but effective’!

While many neutrals probably decided early on that ‘Little Mix – The Search’ was a more entertaining watch, Saints fans enjoyed every single minute of the Turf Moor fixture.

TSP130 sees your regular TSP panel reflect on a very professional performance by Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side.

Can it now kick start the season? Time will tell…

Ahead of previewing next weekend’s home game against West Bromwich Albion (38:45) – which could see our favourite ‘thing in a shirt’ return – Dan Sheldon also provides his latest views on the Saints transfer window (25:45).

Its back-to-back wins (and back-to-back clean sheets!) for Saints now, after a comfortable 2-0 win vs West Bromwich Albion.

TSP131, featuring your regular foursome of Ben, Steve, Glen and Dan, reflects on all the key talking points from St. Mary’s, as the Baggies were put to the sword in very professional style.

Alongside the excitement of that, discussion covers the impending International break, Transfer Deadline Day, Ibrahima Diallo’s arrival (32:30) and also a Fantasy Premier League update.

Finally, after Eric Dier’s rapid exit from the pitch earlier this week, the chaps discuss rare occasions when ‘nature has called’ for footballers (i.e. “Jason Puncheon, he sh*ts when he wants”!)

The Bible (Old Testament) tells us that Samson lost his superhuman strength if/when his long hair was cut. But, in more modern times, Jannik Vestergaard seems to have gained superhuman strength since his barnet was trimmed by the barbers!

Our big Dane – with his recent ‘short(er) back and sides’ – nodded in a well-deserved, injury-time equaliser for Saints (vs Chelsea) this weekend.

TSP132 sees us react to that moment, Theo Walcott’s ‘returning debut’ and much more from Stamford Bridge.

The Pod also includes the latest ‘TSP – International Supporters Club’ (from Bulgaria; 26:15), reflects on the recent Premier League Pay-Per-View decision (50:25), discusses the Transfer Window (41:15), celebrates Danny Ings first senior goal for England (62:05) and previews next weekend’s fixture against Everton (65:05).

Makes a pleasant change from ‘totally’, ‘obviously’ and ‘basically’, I suppose! 😉

Another fun listen, thanks.

But as mentioned above, I think there were about nine “alludeds” and the word was not even used correctly. If you allude to something, it means you are referencing it elliptically or gently implying it. But “alluded” here was used to mean “emphatically stated”.

Barry: “Theo Walcott is the greatest signing in club history, 100% of Saints fans are so ecstatic that the partying hasn’t stopped since deadline day and a 30ft statue of him is being erected in the city centre.”

Tony: “As Barry has alluded to, the Walcott signing has gone down quite well with some Saints fans”.

The other little tic you can’t stop noticing once you first hear it is someone completely agreeing with the previous speaker, but starting their observation with, “Yeah...no” or “No...yeah” rather than just “Yes”.

Bill: Vestergaard has had a really good few matches. He has cemented his place in the team and is unquestionably a starting XI player.

Fred: No. Yeah. He is definitely a starter in central defence.

Overall though these are pedantic little niggles - it’s a fun show with an engaging, open, witty approach. I’m enjoying it and really glad you’ve found the support to continue this season.

On the 13th May 2017, Carlo Ancelotti’s Bayern Munich (5) beat Ralph Hasenhüttl’s RB Leipzig (4) in a dramatic, nine-goal, Bundesliga thriller.

However, exactly a year to the day since Hasenhüttl suffered a totally different experience involving nine goals (lets promptly leave that there….!), it was Ralph’s turn to get one over on his Italian counter-part this time, as Saints professionally dismantled Premier League leaders, Everton.

Ben, Steve and Dan Sheldon look back on all the key talking points from another excellent home win at St. Mary’s.

TSP133 also includes our latest ‘Red & White Insight’, where Toby Steele (Managing Director at Saints) joins us for a chat (28:15) about a number of topical themes, including Club finances, the summer transfer window, Pay-Per-View, ‘Project Big Picture’ and more!

The episode finishes with a preview of next weekend’s visit to Villa Park (1:11.45), including how a set of Saints fans are trying to help our City by encouraging the ‘£14.95 pay-per-view cost’ to be invested elsewhere!

P.S - and not one 'alluded' in this week's episode! 😉

At no point in the ‘How to be a Southampton FC fan’ guide does it ever say life will be easy!

After a scintillating first 45 minutes against Aston Villa, Saints eventually crawled over the line to win 4-3. It took Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side up to joint 3rd in the Premier League. Yes, that’s right……THIRD!

With nerves still a little frayed (not just from Halloween!), we try to unpick the key moments from a rollercoaster of a Premier League match.

In slightly calmer waters, TSP134 also includes a discussion about the recent Leadership Diversity Code (24:00) coverage, including why Saints decided not to sign up to it (at least for the moment). Lastly, there is a preview of next Friday night’s visit to St. Mary’s of Newcastle United (32:10).

Sorry, did we mention Southampton Football Club are joint 3rd in the Premier League………!?

Get rid of that Glen fella or tell him to read up on the offside rule before next weeks pod. Utterly clueless on a weekly basis and seems to have made a niche for himself by being wrong and moaning about things he's wrong about. Get Lucy back on.

“We’re top of the league, we’re top of the league……we are Southampton, we’re top of the league!”

Yes, 28 years since the Premier League was created, victory against Newcastle United took Saints to the summit of England’s top division.

While it only lasted for 40 hours or so, getting to first place is an achievement that should be treasured by everyone connected with the Club (and who is to say we won’t get there again soon?!)

TSP135 sees Ben, Glen, Steve and Simon Peach (PA Media) look back on a memorable Friday night for Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side.

Alongside all that excitement – and ahead of the next International break – we also work our way through some questions from TSP listeners (35:45).
