Can't see him being given much credit on here so felt he deserved his own thread. Not sure how I feel about people booing a manager's decision to substitute a player but felt it was testament to how much Prowsey has improved this season, that would never have been the case back in September. Now find myself disappointed when he's not in the side, didn't think that would ever happen. He's not going to be a regular match winner type to drag us through games but he is always looking for the ball and very rarely wastes it, his composure in an attacking sense has improved vastly this season and the shot that forced a great save out of Romero would have been blasted miles over the bar a few months back. He's taken a bit of a battering on here sometimes but he finally seems to have found his feet and be worth his place in the team.

I was disappointed to see him go (didn't boo just a slight moan) he put in some great free kicks and I like how he now was looking to pass forward more now than sideways.

Its my problem at moment some like JWP, Jayrod, Hojberg and Clasie put in good performances yet get dropped for people like Tadic who are doing nothing in games.

Not sure what else JWP could have done last night and didn't deserve the hook.

He offers good protection to the full back too.

Yeah I wasn't booing either but was also disappointed. Tadic particularly stood out to me as terrible, has been for the majority of the season in my opinion. I'm often suggesting that loyalty works both ways so we can't moan about players wanting to leave if we are suggesting the club gets rid of players they don't want, but for me i'd be quite happy if we sold Tadic now.

I must admit I've been one of his harshest critics since he's been in the first team but he has definitely improved as this season has progressed. His set pieces are a lot more consistent now and looks more of a threat in the final third. He's starting to become a little more aggressive, he still has a fair bit to work on but he is starting to make me eat my words. Hopefully he starts next season in the same vein.

Not sure what people want.

Moaning about like-for-like subs one moment; complaining when Puel changes things up the next.

People have wanted us to take things to the opposition; out of all our players, JWP, Davis and Romeu were the obvious candidates to make way for a more attacking option. Obviously subbing Romeu was a nonstarter, so really it was a choice between Davis (who also had a good game) and JWP. All things considered, the sub made sense.

Agreed.

"Too many crabs... bloody sideways.... blah, blah, blah".

Takes one of them off and puts a direct runner on.... booooo!

I personally wasn't moaning about the sub, just that it was JWP that was the victim of it. For me Davis along with Tadic was poor, either of those should have gone off. This wasn't an anti-Puel thread, i'm very much pro-Puel and want him to stay, just appreciating the fans' change of attitude towards Ward-Prowse.

Except JWP wasn't going sideways last night, he was direct, attacking and had some excellent chances on goal that required a fantastic save or a last ditch block.

Also any changes were hampered by Pied having to come on for Cedric meaning one less sub. I would have taken off the ineffectual Tadic who was creating nothing at least JWP was with his delivery.

Agreed. Also ironic that it appears to be Puel's work with JWP that has got the best out of him and therefore the booing could be seen to be, at least in part, a testament to Puel's coaching ability

i thought he had a good game last night apart from one terrible pass which man u did not capitalise on. He looks to be toughening up a bit in a tackle as well.

Had he swapped Tadic for Boufall then the boo boys would be moaning about like for like subs. It looked to me that he played Boufall as a 10 leaving Tadic & Redmond wide. This still gave us the stability of our "normal" central partnership of Davo & OR .Had we been losing he'd have probably taken Davo off & left JWP on.

JWP has improved, more than I expected and should be our regular penalty kicker. When he is subbed we never seem to play as well

JWP has no doubt improved this season, which I put down to exposure and game time. However, you have to question if he really has a place in the team next year?

I don't think he has the strength to play in a deeper role, or the stamina to play box to box in 2 next to Romeu and I think he lacks the attacking side of the game to fill the role as a no.10 (with our current squad, I would say Davis is best suited to this role). He is very good at keeping the ball and is our best player from a dead ball.

IMO, he's best suited to play in a 3, however I don't think that suits us. It'll be interesting to see how we set up next year and if JWP keeps his place.

Nothing to do with the coaching staff then?

Funny how it's Puel when players are shiete but any improvement is down to other things

Of course Puel has to take credit, he's given him game time? I never suggested it wasn't down to Puel did I?

It's funny how these things work, isn't it? I saw someone say Cedric hadn't improved under Puel the other day. Cedric, that used to be dropped for Martina or even Yoshida as a RB, but is now one of our best players, hasn't improved under Puel... Romeu has gone from bit part player to absolutely outstanding every game, playing in arguably a more difficult role and with less cover beside him. Yoshida has been brilliant, as has JWP.

wasnt at the game last night but was the booing actual booing of the sub or fans singing booooooufal?

It was 100% booing and jeering towards the sub.

Thought JWP was our biggest attacking threat in the second half (and he didn't even play half of that). Great to see him charging around and getting stuck in more, he seems to have gained half a yard of pace too. I like him in the right mid role he's been in recently. We look weaker when he's not playing which is a testament to him.

Posted

It would be great if he could put on a bit more muscle and play alongside Romeu in the deeper role because technically his game is well suited to that position.

Davis, Redmond, Tadic, Boufal and Sims (subject to departures / signings) could then compete for the advanced spots.

I think that JWP is good at whipping in Free kicks and corners but I would nt say he is great at taking free kicks as direct shots and his open play direct shooting is woeful

I don't think Boufal was being booed or JWP.It was the fact that JWP was coming off rather than Tadic or Redmond who seemed to be getting most of the flak during the game.

Haha like boo-urns. It was without a doubt booing of the decision to withdraw JWP unfortunately. Obviously booing the decision rather than the man making it... ah no, probably not, ****s.

You're suggesting that giving him game time was all it took, nothing to do with coaching.

partly. it's also testament to how much the rest of the squad have regressed.

Yeah, there were some boo's around where I sit and they were all because is was JWP being taken off rather than Tadic.

Hope we start having someone make a late run to the back post when we've got a corner, so many corners against Arsenal and Man Utd went through over the crowd and we never had anyone attacking the back post from deep.

As several players have gone backwards under Puel it is unlikely that Puel is responsible for certain players getting better.... is that not so.... ?

If we are moving back to a 4-2-3-1 then JWP will find it hard to get a game wide right.

Begs the question, how will MP use him? He is still too weak and slow to play in the "2" and a non-threat no 10.

How can we use his technical ability but without his poor physical ability hampering the team in either defence or attack?

Posted

I'm sure it'll be a case of yet another manager trying to shoehorn him into a variety of roles, knowing that he compromises each one in various ways, but feeling like he's worth persevering with regardless.

'Dead ball specialist' is not really a correct description of Ward-Prowse. He is a corner specialist. His free-kicks in front of the oppostion penalty area usually go a yard high and wide of the goal. We really miss not having a real dead ball specialist, like Le Tissier or Lambert, who can score goals from free-kicks. I think Boufal or Gabbiadini would probably be better at taking them than Ward-Prowse.

VVD used to take them for Celtic, I'd give him a go (if he's still here!)
