Sorry if this is mentioned elsewhere (I can't see it)

Anyone know when the new fixtures are out?

Last week of august apparently.

Hoping we can be the party poopers for Leeds away.

That would be the worst first game of the season! Always keen to avoid the newly promoted clubs at the start of a season. They always play with a little bit more of a bounce and can catch you off guard - even Norwich beat Man City at the start of last season.

Give us some games against West Ham, Newcastle, Burnley, Brighton, Sheff U etc to start with please!

Good for who? The fans watching on TV? Not the players. That game needs to be pushed back 24 hours.

He’s trying to wind people up. Trousers has a theory that Boxing Day isn’t on the 26th December.

No it doesn't. That's how the Christmas fixtures work and exactly how it should be.

I’ve heard it is Brentford

I heard it's Man City at home. Messi's first match. Suddenly people who weren't going to buy season tickets will be clamouring to get one in case they are successful in the ballot.

What is the group stage? Does that mean extra games?

There has been a group stage for the last 3 seasons.

Group stage
  • Sixteen groups of 4 teams would be organised on a regionalised basis.
  • All groups would include one invited club.
  • All clubs would play each other once, either home or away (Academies play all group matches away from home).
  • Clubs would be awarded three points for a win and one point for a draw.
  • In the event of a drawn game (after 90 minutes), a penalty shootout would be held with the winning team earning an additional point.
  • Clubs expelled from the EFL will be knocked out of the tournament automatically.
  • The top two teams would progress to the Knockout Stage.
Knockout stage
  • Round 2 and 3 of the competition will be drawn on a regionalised basis.
  • In Round 2, the group winners shall be seeded and the group runners-up shall be unseeded in the draw.
  • In Round 2, teams who played in the same group as each other in the Group Stage shall keep apart from each other.
  • Academy teams from Round 2 to the semi-finals keep apart.

Group A please

IIRC in the past they structured the draw to avoid games like Pompey 1st team vs Saints academy in the group stage possibly on police advice. Hopefully that has changed for this season.

Who did we have in the group stage last season? This is the League cup rather than the Checkatrade?

I thought that was the Fulham game where PEH played LWB

The League Cup does not have a group stage and is called the Carabao Cup.

The above group stage is for the EFL Trophy, it doesn't have a sponsor for 2020/21. Last season it was called the Leasing.com Cup, the season before it was the Checkatrade.

It's pretty much what the JPT was, they've had this group stage for a few years, where they invite the 'U23s' of 'bigger' sides to compete. Think we were knocked out by Charlton last year.

Indeed. Boxing Day only moves to two days after Christmas if the day after Christmas is a Sunday. If Christmas is Friday, Boxing Day is Saturday and the following Monday is a Bank Holiday observed. HTH

An average set of fixtures, bloody Burnley away early again, bet the weather will be crap, early September but it'll be Feb weather.

Hopefully though should be able to pick up enough form and points to not be near the bottom, compared to last year where we played the previous seasons top 9 teams in the first 12 games IIRC.
