Bad Gateway several times over an extended period. Then when eventually the site opens, click on a particular topic in the Lounge, and it won't open. However, click on the name of the last person posting on that topic and it opens. Click on the Lounge again to view other topics and I can't, because again they won't open. Click on Saints Forum, opens right away.

Jesus, what a bunch of whiny children on here. Yes the site is having problems, but unlike Twitter/Facebook/Daily Mail/other places you all crawl around, SWF is one guy doing this in his spare time for a loss, upgrading to try and improve the functionality of this site that we all use for peanuts, or for nothing at all. The fact that @stevegrant is being so transparent with his updates is certainly more than you would get from other sites.

Not sure if the responses here are getting me riled up because I work in IT where deployment of new software is never smooth, or just that my mother raised to treat other people with more respect.

Bizarre from you to think that everyone should just ignore the issues. I don't think anyone has attacked Steve personally but it would be ridiculous not to point out some of the ongoing problems. I'm sure Steve will fix it eventually but there's clearly an ongoing daily problem for the forum.

Perspective is an interesting thing. I don't see that has Steve has been treated with disrespect, or that people are being "whiny children". Many of us have used this forum and it's predecessor for years, and for my part, it's a great forum which I'd like to see survive and grow. However, that ain't gonna happen if these issues persist - people are highlighting the issues to help Steve, and the forum, not "whine".

With that said, if you're going to run a forum, run one that works and fix it when you know it’s not working. If finances are the issue (you assume that) Steve should say. We don't know if he runs at a loss, but if he is and there aren't past profits that could be used to make the forum work reliably, then Steve may want to be transparent and tell us what he needs. People have said that they'd put their hands in their pockets and I think many would.

Apparently the issues aren't around to a lack of spec in the new setup, the kit and setup should be more than enough to handle our traffic. It looks like the issues we are seeing are Forum bugs and SQL query issues which are doing some weird things.

The worry I have is that, as Steve said, these things can take months and months to unpick and pin down. I don't think this place will survive these issues for a couple of months!

If money was an issue with the other place, I'd have been more than happy to pay a bit more and help support the upgrade and on-going running of the existing infrastructure.

The big issue seems to be loading the forum topic listings. Home page loads ok but click on  The Saints and it errors out every time. Reload home and then I click on time of last post. Scroll up to time when I was last on to read all on that topic from then and use the go to next unread.  only way it works for me on android phone and windows edge laptop.

I'm possibly in "teaching your grandmother to suck eggs" territory here (so apologies in advance to @stevegrant if this sounds patronising, it's not intended to) but if its a case of troubleshooting bugs and/or quirks in the software, then couldn't Steve put out an appeal to the SWF massive to see if anyone can help him get to the bottom of things rather than him having to taken the entire burden of resolution on his own shoulders? 'Many hands make light work' as they say in cliche land. Just thinking out loud.... (and being an IT bod myself, although more of an old fashioned one - 1980s vintage :), I know you can also have 'too many cooks spoiling the broth' when it comes to problem troubleshooting if people start stepping on each other's toes.)

Been very hard to get on in the last 24 hours. As suggested above, can get to the homepage, but clicking on The Saints just tends to lead to getting timed out.

It’s a pity, I know Steve has invested time and money in getting into this new platform,  but it seems the problem is pretty fundamental and obviously has moved well beyond a few glitches at the beginning for a day or two.

I started on ICL kit,  ( and an old Honeywell with 32K of main memory ), in 1982.

I don't go back quite that far (work wise) but part of my training for a large bank in 1986 did involve punched card programming :)

More thinking out loud.... could the problem be the sheer size of the database? We do have 14 years worth of crud afterall!

Maybe the answer is to archive all content off to some storage unit in the sky and start again from afresh?

Yours clutching-at-straws-ly

Mere whippersnappers. My programming started in 1966 programming in BASIC on an ICL machine that Enfield Technical College let us use at lunchtimes. Then on to FORTRAN on an IBM 1130 at our university engineering labs.

Then an Elliott 803 in the early 70s which was obsolete even then with five-hole punched tape and a loudspeaker on the main data bus making noises so beloved of the entertainment media of the time. We too used punched Hollerith cards but we had to punch the holes ourselves using a hand punch.

My next love was a Honeywell 516 which we used for the first live Teletext transmissions. That had a ten-stack interchangeable disk holding about 36Mbytes.

Computers are like boats. The bigger and faster the machine the less fun you have.

Crud...!  F*ckin' Crud...!!!!  I'll have you know that some of the finest amateur literary minds of all time have contributed to that '14 years of crud...!'  It amounts to a fans work of art about our beloved team, as seen from the terraces.  Crud.... ffs!

Doesn't seem to be any pattern as to when it's slow for me.

Getting onto the forum listing, hangs, bad gateway. Clicking on a thread once I get in, same experience. Posting, it hangs on submitting reply for ages and sometimes gives me a gateway timeout there. Happens if I search, log in, log out...no rhyme or reason to it for me anyway.

It hasn't been very good today. This is the first time I've been able to get beyond the forum home page in fact.. As I type I've just tried on my phone and got a bad gateway message. Off to try an old ipad.. yep, bad gateway..

The above message was written earlier and copied, which was lucky as I got bad gateway when I tried to send it. It really is pretty unusable most of the time I'm afraid.

Edit: but it did actually send. It's all very random.

Not forgetting the sheer literary gold, and historically important social commentary, that is the PTS.

Surprised to see the mods shutting down the forum, I guess it has taken up a lot of their personal time though which is fair enough. When's the official end date?

It can be today for you if you like?

Getting pretty fucked off with the snide comments from people, to be honest.

What's changed today? It's rapid.

Absolutely nothing, that's what's so confusing. I've got an AWS specialist company looking at the database as I'm pretty sure the bottleneck is all there (the server CPU is constantly very low, so it's not a load issue), but ultimately the problem is actually likely to be in the software itself as there are a couple of queries that are probably run on every page load that are causing the issue. It'll just be a case of changing some settings in the database that will mitigate the issues until they're (hopefully) fixed in the next version of the forum software - that's supposedly due fairly soon.
