Everton vs Saints - Build Up

If there’s one stadium we’re less likely to win at than St Mary’s, then it’s Goodison. Still, you‘d like to think we’ve got a bit of confidence and belief now. Let’s keep Che and Ings together and see if they can form a decent partnership.

We've had a 100% record on Free-to-air, three out of three, and we've won both of our previous matches on Amazon Prime (Norwich home, Chelsea away).

Thursday's match is both on Amazon Prime but also being made free for all.

We are literally nailed on to win.

If we need to make Europe its a must win.

Personally hate the away fixture against them in the past...always been misery.....hoping for at least a draw.

Play the same team that started v City.

Yeh we'd have to win here to have a shot and I think we probably need to win 4/5 for Europe and draw the other one. 8th is 5 points away and 7th is 6 points away, we can only get a maximum of 58 points, and that would still be Sheff Utd picking up less than 7 points from from 5 games.

So it's still a bit of a long shot, results over the last round didn't really go our way.

Personally I think it would be good to get top half and finish above Everton, Burnley, and Newcastle, as I don't particularly like any of those teams

We do always struggle against Everton but form seems to be with us and it's away where we are good, plus they have no Goodison crows to spur them on, so maybe.

The fact this is at Goodison means we as fans have to approach this game knowing it is highly unlikely we will win. Its just one of those things. Even when we were 1-0 up in 95th min when Hughes was manager we managed to concede.

I suppose it would be ironic to win there the one time no Saints fans can be in the ground to see it.

Looking at the table I don't think Europe is a realistic aim for us, top half would still be fantastic achievement all things considered in a frustrating season where we had a record loss and Burnley / West Ham / Newcastle  did the double over us.

Where is this available for free?

Would absolutely keep the same team as long as they're all fit - no reason to change it.  Only question is whether Pierre is fit, but given how well Romeu has played in the last 2, I'd probably start Romeu anyway.

Think I'd agree. Romeu seems revitalised and more disciplined since we came back.

Overall I'm impressed with the fitness levels and I think the club did a great job in monitoring regimes in lockdown. We've looked fitter and sharper than pretty well all the other teams I've seen. Only Adams looked tired at 60 mins yesterday (probably emotional shock at scoring) and our lack of energy against Arsenal which cost us the game was largely due to the heat.

Despite Adams finally breaking his duck I would be inclined to partner Long with Ings for this game. I think Longy runs the channels better, is quicker and we seem to create more chances for Ings when he is on the pitch. Probably going to get flamed for that 🙂

They are playing tonight so despite the incredible effort we put in last night we should be fresher.

I bloody hate Everton.......well Adrian Heath moreso I suppose but it would be great to go there and win for a change.

Adrian b.....y Heath. My worst moment ever in Football. No amount of wins will ever fully avenge that.

Very brave of you to suggest that on here 🙂        But I agree with you (so that's at least 2 of us .......)

Three of us.

Shane gets a lot of stick on here, mainly for his finishing.....and I agree, I wish he would score more, but his off the ball running, creating panic in opposition defences and creating space for others (Ings) is invaluable. By all means play Shane Long for the first hour and then bring Che on with half an hour to go, to hopefully nick another goal. That's not to say I don't think Che has a big future here - so pleased he scored a "worldy" yesterday. He looked like he was knackered when Ralph took him off yesterday, so half an hour against "the dugouts" might just suit him. That's my thoughts.......however.....

I think Ralph will think completely opposite......start with Che and bring Shane on with half an hour to go when their defence is knackered so he can cause them havoc then. Anyway, I'll leave it to Ralph.....he seems to know what he's doing.

For me it's a close call, but I'm sure they'll both get time. I think Shane has been slightly off his normal pace since we came back so probably just favour Che starting.

No flaming, we are all allowed an opinion.

I agree that Shane runs the channels better, but I think that Che holds the ball up and links play better. For example, against Watford every time we broke forward Shane would run with the ball but then lose it; whereas when Che came on we retained the ball better.

Personally, I would stay with an unchanged 11 - if they are all fit and healthy. I just hope that the game is going sufficiently well for Ralph to use all 5 subs on Thursday.

Both teams looked awful, I think Everton were just dragged into the bilge Spurs produced though, and what they often produce now days.

Another Mourinho masterclass. They can't stick with him, he'll kill everything MP built (he probably already has tbf)

What? I guess you don't really mean aggressive.

I mean aggressive in the "play more attacking and get at them" sense, not the "be physically intimidating" sense.

Could be changes to the line-up just because Sunday to Thursday is a short recovery period, and there may be players needing to recover from knocks.  On the other hand, some players not available for the City game could be back in the reckoning.  With two games next week to prepare some rotation seems likely.

I think we have our tails up now - don’t think there is anyone in the remaining games to scare us. We look fit and that showed in the City game, actually from both sides, where just the minimum of subs were made, ours replacing a bloke who hasn’t played 90 minutes all season and City trying to unlock our door.
Keep PEH and his negative play off the pitch and we can pocket the 3 points.

Never change a winning team

A winning team will ultimately lose a subsequent game, ergo, surely the art of good management is to know when to change the team to best avert that eventuality....? :)

Djenepo for Armstrong, given the latter's fragility?

Romeu must start.

What do you mean by 'Fragility' ?

I think Armstrong is absolutely perfect for the press in the oppo half of the pitch. Wouldn't be dropping him any time soon.

I can't imagine that there would be one player in that starting 11 that would answer "Yes please boss" if he asks "who feels like a rest?"

I wouldn't drop him either, I have been spruiking his talents for ages.

Ralph explained when he dropped him from the starting line-up recently (Arsenal?) that his body couldn't cope with rapid back-to-back starts.

If I remember rightly - we paid about £8m for Armstrong. That is looking like an absolute bargain now. To me, he's looking like a £30m + player now. He suits Ralph's style perfectly and is chipping in with assists and goals. As I said in another post he must be one of the first names on the team sheet.

Djenepo is out injured again. That must be at least 3 times he's been out with injury this season!?

Can't imagine there will be many changes to the starting 11 given how many players are out and a lack of experience in reserve.

Is Boufal still out?

Indeed. Ralph has commented that all the players were looking tired in training, which is no surprise after the massive effort put in on Sunday night. Wouldn't be shocked to see Smallbone and maybe Hoj come back in for whoever is the most tired from the midfield. Armstrong may start on the bench given his previous struggles with injury and playing several games in a week.

Adams also looked tired in second half but would think Ralph will want to see more of him on the pitch now he's got his goal.
