That Brighton player who was pretty much announced a Saints singing too - Inigo Calderon.

He was in the Brighton team that beat us to the League One title in 2011. He was in the PFA League One Team of the Year that year so, he could well have been the difference between us and them as Brighton only finished 3 points ahead of us. If we'd signed him, he'd have replaced Danny Butterfield.

We tried to sign Coutinho but he turned us down in favour of Liverpool. He had played for Pochettino at Espanyol.

The situation was similar with Maddison and Leicester. So, we can't blame the club for not trying.

They were just two of the many that got away because wealthier and more successful clubs wanted them too.

Going back to the 1980s, McMenemy tried hard to sign Trevor Francis. If he had succeeded, we probably would have done the double in 1984 so that was the one that hurt us the most. In the late 70s, he also tried to sign Colin Todd. He was one of the few other big names to get away from McMenemy, who was brilliant at persuading top players, like Keegan, Shilton, Ball and Osgood, to come here.

We were certainly linked with Trevor Francis in 81/82 and Ball, Channon and Keegan were keen on the idea as we were top of the table and petitioned Lawrie to make it happen as they felt he could make the difference in winning the league. Lawrie himself was not quite so keen because Francis would have cost a million and he always said we would not go  the way of Chelsea (then impoverished) in signing players we could not afford. Francis could well have made the difference in winning something in 83/84. However that would have meant we would not have signed Frank Worthington, who did not score many but was integral to the way we played that season.

Francis was a possibility whilst we were top of the league in early 1982, and might have made the difference that season never mind 1983/4.

Story I read some years later was that Lawrie had agreed a deal in principle with the City manager John Bond, with either Graham Baker or Steve Williams going to City as part of the deal. The City chairman at the time Peter Swales pulled the plug on it though in fear of a fans revolt.

As good a player as Francis was I wonder how he'd have slotted with Channon , Keegan and co.

Tscheu La Ling is one that puzzles me from 1982. Had a trial scored twice in a friendly as a guest player but we didn't pursue it. Was a Dutch international at the time with Ajax and left there a few months later.

Perhaps he didn't look the part in training, or possibly we were putting all our efforts in pursuing Trevor Francis but no idea why we didn't follow it up. Anyone shed any light on it ?

We needed him, as Moran had got himself injured in A Skate night club in January and missed the rest of the season. We only had Puckett in reserve and by the time we had lost the chance of winning the league, we got the legendary Keith Cassells in the Mark Wright deal.

IIRC Colin Todd agreed to sign. It's only when he went home and told his wife the deal fell apart.

Don't know how close we were to signing him, but Victor Osimhen was mentioned a lot last summer.  Not sure if he was an alternative to either Djenepo or Adams.

He seems to be linked with all sorts of good clubs after a very good season with Lille.

In recent years the names Vincent Aboubaker and Wylan Cyprien stand out. The latter would be a cracking signing, doing very well at Nice but probably out of our price range now, though Newcastle got St Maximin for £16 million last summer from them...

Were we ever in for either of them, or were they just names from the mongboard sweepstake one summer ?
