Sounds like we’ve lost out here trying to get away with getting him on the cheap. As good as the defensive display was yesterday the fact is some of the same players have proven over the past couple of years they can’t do it week in week out. May sound harsh but that’s the reality.   Maybe we’ve moved on to other targets but there was obviously strong interest given we made a bid.

With a release clause of £10m or thereabouts then would have to think if he is our first choice then we would stump up that cash - bargain if the club feel he is good. Young but played a season as a starter in La Liga. Left footed.

With Yoshida gone, Vestergaard seemingly going and Danso unlikely to stay it would seem he need two CBs most likely.

Aside from Salisu, the other strongest links have been to Disasi, another left sided CB. Same clubs linked as well: Rennes, Everton, Wolves, Arsenal. Would be a shame if we were to miss out and get neither.

To be fair £10mill is cheap these days for an up and coming talent if you were looking at a similar player coming through Brentford or at Fulham they would be asking double.

At the sort of cost mentioned you'd have hoped we'd have got something sorted, and IF we have gone cold on Disasi then  hope its for something concrete and not the sort of rumoured dithering that Reed and Wilson were considered notorious for, leaving us with a third, fourth or fifth option... (who was our first choice all along type of bollocks ....)

No idea which of the two is the better option, Salisu is left sided so that seems an advantage  whereas the French would come without any issues over a work permit.

Noting that Juan Mata owns the Agency this guy is with.

Wonder if it'll be sorted when we're at Old Trafford next week.

Salisu to decide between Rennes and Saints imminently after both agree to pay his release clause.

He initially preferred an English speaking league but there are still come doubts about his abaility to get a WP.

Rennes were seemingly out of the race but can offer CL football next season and have improved their offer to the player.

Really hope we get him. When Norwich want £50m for Ben Godrey, to get a highly rated, left footed, English speaking young CB with a years first team football in La Liga for £10m would appear a great deal.

Either way, sounds like an end to the speculation is very close and presumably this is the CB we really want, hence the Disasi talks going cold.

This says there was a meeting yesterday between Rennes and Salisu's agent which has lead Rennes to be optimistic they can sign him.

At the end or the day, if we truly want him; we will get him. Our wage structure will surely blow Rennes ou5 of the water

So according to that article, we've been interested since the start of the year - surely if we've been interested that long, we would have sounded out the WP situation and know whether it's worth pursuing or not.

As you say, with Disasi talks going cold, would suggest we're focusing on Salisu - lets hope it's because we've had positive feedback on a WP.

It would be classic Saints to miss out on two of our top defensive targets

Looks like a bit of a balls up to me, close to doing a deal for one player, pull the plug on that to go after someone else, he then choses another club meanwhile first target joins someone else as well. The ghost of Les and Ross lives on.

Certainly seems like classic Saints:

- Player has bargain release clause, speaks English and favours a PL move.

- Rennes DoF states they want the player, have met the clause but he wants to move to an English speaking league and they won't force someone to join. Move on to other targets.

- Saints make a lowball offer rather than paying the release clause

- Rennes sense an opportunity and get to work on persuading the player that he should join them. CL football helps.

- Saints then agree to meet the clause but in the interim period the player has changed his mind. (Possibly haggling over a bargain release fee doesn't scream ambition to him)

- Meanwhile the other choice Disasi knows he wasnt first choice for Saints and gets other offers and is also not available

- Saints get a big offer for Vestergaard but have to turn it down as they haven't brought anyone in and only have 2 CBs on the books who they actually want. (Ok, made this bit up).

Don't panic there's still the CB from Millwall or Bristol Rovers.

https://le10sport.com/football/mercato/exclu-mercato-rennes-un-dernier-detail-a-regler-pour-salisu-510764

This says that Salisu is very close to joining Rennes once agent commissions are agreed.

Juan Mata Snr, his agent, prefers the Southampton offer as he personally gets more cash but the issue of a WP is probably the key issue as Salisu has no caps for Ghana and that makes it hard for him to move to the PL so he will likely join Rennes.

If true...its both logical (he has no caps for Ghana) and also utterly bizarre - why would Saints chase a player that it would be hard to legally sign?!

Either way, he looks set for Rennes which is a shame. At that price we may as well sign him and loan him out til he qualifies for a WP!

Especially it appears as we walked away from the the Axel Disasi deal to chase this one who it seems we couldn't have signed anyway, now Wolves have apparently bid for Disasi so we seem to be missing out on both of them 🙈

Wouldn't be surprised to see us back in for Disasi after this, still, very disappointing. Will say, cannot find le10sport on any source reliability guides so probably worth taking this with a slight pinch of salt.

Sounds like our work permit advisor is Les Reed.

Could be a really good signing this guy. Looks like he can play with the ball on the floor too.  If we manage to get rid of Vestergaard for anything above £12m, and get this guy in, I think it's good business.

He also confirmed that the track leading to Mohammed Salisu (21 years old, Valladolid) was still active, as Florian Maurice said on RMC Sport. Rennes and Valladolid agree but the player hesitates between joining the Breton club or Southampton. "It shows that the project is interesting for the players," says Holveck. Even if the Premier League is attractive, we make us think."

That is from the Rennes chairman a week or so ago, given there was actually no movement with Rennes I'm inclined to think he has chosen us and this is where we start to hear...

Lots of conflicted stories, none from particularly reliable sources. I am no more inclined to believe this latest development than the one from Le10 sport yesterday. We will have to wait and see.

At what stage do we have to fret over whether or not we can obtain a work permit ? Could we have been dealing with this behind the scenes over the last week prior to an announcement, or can we only apply once he has signed ?

I think you can only apply once he has 'signed', however I'm sure we would have been working on it behind the scenes and got a strong indication of whether it was likely he would get one before proceeding.

even if it was done and dusted, I cant see anything being announced until the end of the season.

whats more with Bednarek, Stephens, and Vestergaard all having contracts finishing in 2022 weve got to twist or stick. Where can we get value to go again?

I suspect Salisu is done bare WP confirmation.

We will sell Swan Vest - should have taken the £26M from Leicester in Jan, but guessing we can still get £20M or so for him. Bednarek will/should also be sold - he's just about ok but not a great CB - should get 5 to 7M for him. Use the funds to buy Salisu and one other. Stephens will be fine along side a dominant partner. Then hopefully one of the academy prospects come through to challenge to keep the rest on their toes. Oh also dump Danso - wages to fund new guys.

Sell Bednerak? Are you having a giraffe? You're not going to find a more in form CB in Europe at the moment. The guy reads the game well, dominant in the air, uses it well with his feet - he's a very, very capable centre back and in my eyes our best centre back. Salisu or whoever we get will be to partner Bedernak.

The first crazy thing is you'd sell him, the second crazy thing is the fee you'd accept. You're talking getting 20m for the oaf that is Vestergaard, yet you're only looking at 5m for the best CB we have? I think you need to revaluate what you see!

Bednarek is our current best centre back. Salisu if signed should be partnering Bednarek, not replacing him!

Danso doesn't need to be 'dumped' as he is automatically due to leave at the end of his loan.

That's just ridiculous. Bednarek has gone from strength to strength. Stephens will be first choice partner. We need a good backup, and Salisu seems to fit the bill.

Posted

I think long term I wonder whether the new guy coming in will be competing with Bednarek to partner Stephens. Stephens is a ball playing CB and one that gets things going from the back, I don't know whether or not thst is something that Ralph will use, At least until he gets a GK who can distribute well. But that isn't a huge priority right now.

Posted

I am led to believe there are no issues regarding a work permit and that he has a European passport due to French connections. It makes perfect sense that this would have been checked prior to any bid being made. Also a host of Premier league clubs have been interested in him and therefore would have checked this out.

4yr contract with the option of a year extension.

How many of those years will he see?

If he does well then probably 2 years. Not a problem if sold for a big fee and then replaced well.

Posted (edited)

He looks a great signing.  Everything about him looks good and for a great price with wages under £40k a week. If we can get the right back situation sorted and a replacement for Hojbjerg then we could be in for a very good season next year.  Also says Vestergaard and Hojbjerg to leave
