its a bit of a strange one because it's based on the top 6 now not when they were playing. Leeds were champions when Speed and Batty played for them, as were Blackburn with Batty. Newcastle were also a top team for a while in the mid 90s challenging for the title, breaking the world transfer fee and playing champions league football so its not quite great players at small clubs as the title suggests. EIther way i hope Matt wins.

I agree with you. If Batty can be on that list then so can Shearer and many more!

Good point, I’d forgotten about that, shearer played for the same teams as Batty did, apart from us.

They discussed that on the show. They'd decided to make Shearer an exemption, because he'd already won the goalscorer category and been in the captains category and they wanted to look at other notable players.

I've voted for Le Tissier as number 1, what a legend he is. I originally became a Saints fan because they were my local team but also I think because we always had a knack of finding a special player that it was worth going to a match just to see what they might do ... it was Mick Channon when I started going to the Dell in the 70s as a nipper, Ivan Golac, Alan Ball, Frank Worthington, Kevin Keegan, the Wallaces, Steve Williams, Phil Boyer, Le Tissier, Lambert, Mane ...

For a club of our size (provincial club, small ground at The Dell) we've had some incredible players and names playing for us, especially in the Lawrie era, Charlie George (big name on signing), Peter Osgood, Dave Watson, Peter Shilton, and from the 1970's would add Ted MacDougall.

And even in the modern era ... Bale, Mane, Van Dijk .. incredible really.

The difference being is we signed players who were already big names where as now they become big names after we've sold them!

Consistent with the commercialism of football and the move to moneyball .. buy low, sell high ... great if it consistently works and relies upon a great scouting model, but huge downside if you get it wrong, as we did for a season or three ..

It was a load of old pony anyway. Shearer is the best player from outside the top 6.

Would still have preferred to have Matt in our team if it was a choice.

Presumably they excluded Shearer as was in goal scorer one?

I suspect he was excluded even is a paid pundit. But I agree that he should be up there with the best.

They acknowledged that pretty clearly on the show.:uhoh:

Perhaps they should have named the show “From 2-11” instead of top 10 then.

I’m looking forward to The top 10 bands show on BBC4, in which they start by naming The Beatles as number 1, but don’t include them in the top 10.

You do realise this isn't an official list and is just people sitting around chatting about trivial crap, right? Don't take things so seriously, it's nothing to get so upset about. Shearer is one of the presenters on the show. He'd just been in two of the other polls and decided he'd sit this one out so that they could discuss other players, rather than the same old ones again and again. It'd be a dull show if they just sat and talked about Shearer and Henry every week.

They're doing best goals in the PL era this week. Lots of time spent singing the praises of MLT, especially from Shearer. It's the Blackburn one they feature, always hard to choose between that and the Newcastle one.

My mistake, they had the Newcatle one too! I hadn't finished.
