Turkish Posted 30 April, 2020 Share Posted 30 April, 2020 its a bit of a strange one because it's based on the top 6 now not when they were playing. Leeds were champions when Speed and Batty played for them, as were Blackburn with Batty. Newcastle were also a top team for a while in the mid 90s challenging for the title, breaking the world transfer fee and playing champions league football so its not quite great players at small clubs as the title suggests. EIther way i hope Matt wins.
norwaysaint Posted 30 April, 2020 Share Posted 30 April, 2020 2nd in both Shearer and Wright's lists, probably popular enough among neutrals to do well.

Turkish Posted 30 April, 2020 Share Posted 30 April, 2020 I agree with you. If Batty can be on that list then so can Shearer and many more! Good point, I’d forgotten about that, shearer played for the same teams as Batty did, apart from us.
norwaysaint Posted 30 April, 2020 Share Posted 30 April, 2020 Good point, I’d forgotten about that, shearer played for the same teams as Batty did, apart from us. They discussed that on the show. They'd decided to make Shearer an exemption, because he'd already won the goalscorer category and been in the captains category and they wanted to look at other notable players. lambtiss Posted 1 May, 2020 Share Posted 1 May, 2020 I've voted for Le Tissier as number 1, what a legend he is. I originally became a Saints fan because they were my local team but also I think because we always had a knack of finding a special player that it was worth going to a match just to see what they might do ... it was Mick Channon when I started going to the Dell in the 70s as a nipper, Ivan Golac, Alan Ball, Frank Worthington, Kevin Keegan, the Wallaces, Steve Williams, Phil Boyer, Le Tissier, Lambert, Mane ... SFC Forever Posted 1 May, 2020 Share Posted 1 May, 2020 Again voted for MLT. Also put the League winning players at the bottom of the list as they were not outside of top six at time

For a club of our size (provincial club, small ground at The Dell) we've had some incredible players and names playing for us, especially in the Lawrie era, Charlie George (big name on signing), Peter Osgood, Dave Watson, Peter Shilton, and from the 1970's would add Ted MacDougall. lambtiss Posted 2 May, 2020 Share Posted 2 May, 2020 The difference being is we signed players who were already big names where as now they become big names after we've sold them! Consistent with the commercialism of football and the move to moneyball .. buy low, sell high ... great if it consistently works and relies upon a great scouting model, but huge downside if you get it wrong, as we did for a season or three .. BallBoy Posted 3 May, 2020 Share Posted 3 May, 2020 Shearer and Wright went for their mates but the great British public got the answer right. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/52440999
CB Fry Posted 3 May, 2020 Share Posted 3 May, 2020 Shearer and Wright went for their mates but the great British public got the answer right. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/52440999Le Tissier is Shearer's mate and Ian Wright was full of praise and was raving about his best goals video. Matty got plenty of airtime on the programme last night too.

Lord Duckhunter Posted 4 May, 2020 Share Posted 4 May, 2020 (edited) They acknowledged that pretty clearly on the show. Perhaps they should have named the show “From 2-11” instead of top 10 then. I’m looking forward to The top 10 bands show on BBC4, in which they start by naming The Beatles as number 1, but don’t include them in the top 10. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk You do realise this isn't an official list and is just people sitting around chatting about trivial crap, right? Don't take things so seriously, it's nothing to get so upset about. Shearer is one of the presenters on the show. He'd just been in two of the other polls and decided he'd sit this one out so that they could discuss other players, rather than the same old ones again and again. It'd be a dull show if they just sat and talked about Shearer and Henry every week.

norwaysaint Posted 13 May, 2020 Share Posted 13 May, 2020 They're doing best goals in the PL era this week. Lots of time spent singing the praises of MLT, especially from Shearer. It's the Blackburn one they feature, always hard to choose between that and the Newcastle one.
