Real anorak question:

Name the refs from some memorable games that have passed in Saints folklore:

1)1976 FA Cup Final

2)Who sent Best off at The Dell

3)Who sent Jim Steele off in the cup winners cup

As an aside (bonus point if you like) two of them also came to international prominence in World Cups, & European Internationals. When and what for ?

All were fairly high profile at the time.

1) Clive Thomas 2) Lester Shapter.

As for 3), when was Steele sent off in the CWC? Fisher was in Marseille, but I havent a clue who the ref was.

Does the bonus point for Clive Thomas relate to the game in WC 78 when he disallowed a last-second Brazil goal because he had blown for full time just as the ball was being crossed from a corner? No-one could understand why he didn't just end the game before the corner was taken.

If 3) relates to the Anderlecht home tie, the ref was Rudi Glöckner who had previously reffed the 1970 World Cup final between Brazil and Italy. I remember that Jim Steele's error led to the decisive Anderlecht goal but don't recall him being sent off.

Correct on 1)&2).

Yes.

Sorry chaps, I ballsed the clue up for question 3. It was Steele's last game at The Dell I recall, and I had a vague recollection he was sent off as well as his error leading to their goal. He was sent off the previous week at Old Trafford in the Cup replay, although I have a picture of him in my mind trudging off The Dell as a forlorn figure having been shown a red card (obviously another time!). Clearly something has been confused in the 43 years that have passed since (not least a few brain cells being lost to beer in that time).

Glockner did ref the World Cup final in 1970. He'd also been the ref at a Euros qualifying tie between Wales v Czechoslovakia in 1976 where his decisions led to a near riot at Ninian Park. He left the pitch with a police escort to chants of 'sieg hiel' and nazi salutes. Although the fact that an East German ref received such abuse didn't merit condemnation in the press in the 1970's

This will probably be easy for some, but it gives me the chance to say that I am lucky enough to have been at all 8 of Saints' Wembley/Millenium Stadium appearances.

7 of these matches were:

1976 FA Cup final vs Man Utd

1979 League Cup final vs Nottm Forest

1992 ZDS final vs Nottm Forest

2003 FA Cup final vs Arsenal

2010 JPT final vs Carlisle

2017 EFL final vs Man Utd

2018 FA Cup semi-final vs Chelsea

Which game is missing from this list?

Yes, I remember that '76 Charity Shield game at Wembley very well. I've never seen so many p!ssed up Saints fans at any other game before or since. Wembley had to put protective netting up over the players' tunnel after that game because drunk Saints fans' had pelted the Liverpool team with bottles and just about everything else they could lay their hands on. Ironically, I always thought the behaviour of the Saints hordes that day was one of the reasons Keegan signed for us. He must have thought we were the most passionate, fanatical fans in the world to get that worked up over a Charity Shield game. The Liverpool fans were church mice in comparison.

It was 0-0 at half-time but Toshack scored the game's only goal with an assist from Keegan. To be honest, they were clearly the better team on the day.

I played for Saints and have also played for Spurs, Sparta Prague and AEK Athens among others, have represented my country at both junior and senior level and am currently playing top flight football. Who am I?

My first thought was Iago Falque...

But no, you are Thomas Pekhart.

My question as missed our earlier

I was made my debut at in the preseason friendly alongside another player would go on to become a fans favourite and one of the best players in the position we both played in in the clubs recent history, I actually got a better view than my colleague in that game so high hopes were held for me at Southampton. Sadly I only made one full first team appearance for saints which saw the first goal

Scored by an opposition player who would go on to become an all time club and premier league great. Who am I?

going to through in a couple of guesses:

Jake Sinclair

Steve Guppy

Tim Sparv

Nile Ranger

well 4, but its a ****ed up question, too hard and littered with bad grammar, clearly Turkish was over the limit when he wrote this, unusual for his high standards.

Haha, yes I’d had a few last night

Let me rephrase it. It’s none of them

I signed on loan and made my debut off the bench in a preseason friendly alongside another player also signed that summer (permanently) who would go on to be considered one of the best players saints have had in our position in recent years. There were high hopes for me as in that match report the echo gave me a better report than the team mate I mentioned, sadly things didn’t work out for me, I only made one full appearance in the premier league as a substitute in a match where an opposition player scored his first goal in England, he we go on to become a club and premier league great. After my unsuccessful loan spell with saints I returned to my native country although I later had an trial at club managed by the same manger who brought me to Southampton.

Yes, I was trying to get my head around it too.

Recent history (this century?)

Someone we thought was going to be great.

Made his debut in a friendly alongside someone in the same position who DID become a great player, one of the best. (VvD, Killer, Morgan, Lambert, Mane?)

Only made one full appearance.

That was in a game where a player who became a PL great either scored the first goal of his career, or just the first goal of the match.

There's not quite enough info to latch onto.

Jamie White?

I saw Richards at the Botley Park Hotel the evening before he signed. If I recall correctly he was one of those signings without much prior build-up or widespread knowledge?

I don’t think much was expected from him, a free transfer from wolves and Dave Jones didn’t have a great track record with signing Centre backs. Plus fans were annoyed that Ken Monkou has been allowed to leave. From his first few games though you could see he was quality. Tragic he died so young. I was at the pre season friendly where Almedia played and he did look very good, surprising he never got more game time.
