Marsdinho Posted 26 November, 2019 Share Posted 26 November, 2019 Can anyone confirm if Saints have ever played Denmark U23's in a friendly. A mate of mine has a vague recollection that we did during the late 80's / early 90's (I cant remember results from 2 weeks ago, so I'm useless!) He seems to think that it may have been part of the Danes preparation for the Olympics? Can anyone confirm / got a any info? Cant find anything online. Cheers
the saint in winchester Posted 26 November, 2019 Share Posted 26 November, 2019 It does seem strange for a club side to be taking on an entire country!
Shropshire Saint Posted 26 November, 2019 Share Posted 26 November, 2019 I don't remember that match but I do remember us playing the Italian Under 21 side in a pre-season friendly in the 1960's. It would be interesting to see the Italian line-up for that match to see if any of the greats played.

It does seem strange for a club side to be taking on an entire country! Seem to remember South Korea also playing clubs sides in their build up to the 2002 World Cup. Badger Posted 26 November, 2019 Share Posted 26 November, 2019 Also remember Saints playing the Japan national side in a pre-season friendly at The Dell in the early c1971 or 72. Won 6-2.
Nordic Saint Posted 26 November, 2019 Share Posted 26 November, 2019 Back in the early twentieth century, when Saints were one of the best teams in the world, we thrashed national teams like France, Argentina and Uruguay away, usually running up double figure scorelines against them. Nordic Saint Posted 26 November, 2019 Share Posted 26 November, 2019 Southampton FC reached its zenith in 1904 with the 6-1 victory over France and the first tour of South America by an English team, when we beat Argentina and Uruguay. Perhaps the long overseas tours were too much of a distraction as the club began to decline after that. If there had been a World Club Championship in those days, Saints would have been in it and probably would have won it.

stevy777_x Posted 26 November, 2019 Share Posted 26 November, 2019 We played the Bahrain national team in the 90’s and won 1-0. Le tiss with the goal. Half the team had gone on a binge the night before and were hungover playing the match.

Turkish Posted 26 November, 2019 Share Posted 26 November, 2019 I’m sure we played the Kuwait national team in a preseason friendly in the early 90s, I think we won 5-0.
