rallyboy Posted 7 October, 2019 Share Posted 7 October, 2019 It's all very well Kat potentially buying back in, which seems unlikely, but will the calm and positivity of her return instantly shore up a leaky defence? I think Ralph perhaps needs to prioritise what happens on the pitch rather than being sad and distracted by boardroom issues.

the saint in winchester Posted 7 October, 2019 Share Posted 7 October, 2019 Saints tactics, fanny around with the ball in midfield, pass back to Gunn who hoofs it to Chelsea player on half way line, slick 1-2 then ball in net.....and repeat. Yeah that's pretty much it. So much sideways passing yesterday hoping for an opening which never came, constant passing back and re-building until the crowd start to jeer, then they lose it and Chelsea cut through us. VectisSaint Posted 7 October, 2019 Share Posted 7 October, 2019 Are you forgetting about Shane 'Forrest Gump' Long? No, not forgetting Longy at all. His speed is a bit like the JWP myth, you know the one about him being the greatest set piece taker since, oh I don't know, since JWP. A myth. Suppose Michael O'Bafemi is the nearest we have and yet I think his muscle bulk has diminished his speed somewhat.

And those cunning decisions were taken under Kat - you can find fault with Goa for a lot of things; but rocking the boat isn’t one of them. The club’s structures, philosophy and direction of travel are basically the same. If anything, Goa deserves praise for calling time on Bunsen and Beaker. rallyboy Posted 7 October, 2019 Share Posted 7 October, 2019 Ralph should have listened to the fans when things weren't going well and got everyone to just kick the ball as high and as far as possible. That is often my favourite bit when we're not playing well, the vocal spectators who favour the Wimbledon 1980s approach. Hoofball - the answer to every footballing crisis. John Boy Saint Posted 7 October, 2019 Share Posted 7 October, 2019 Keep the purse strings tied tight we bob about in trouble, flirting with the bottom of the league and the dangers of dropping out of the money spa, making the 20% left to buy cheaper as the value is under threat. Even with a couple of Billion in your pocket the principle over the last few Millions owed matters as Billionaires normally like to keep score. The money is insignificant its the numbers they like. Jonnyboy Posted 7 October, 2019 Share Posted 7 October, 2019 International break has come at good time as our season needs a major reboot. Looking at our fixtures if we don’t change approach radically we will be in bottom three by end of November, which is when easier set of fixtures arrive. Suggests following: - replace Gunn with McCarthy. Needs to regain confidence, Alex is keeping clean sheets in cup and Gunn’s distribution and leadership qualities have dipped. - stick with three centre backs, would try Danso alongside today’s two. - drop JWP. Not delivering and needs to be taken out for a while. - drop Redmond. Not same player since injury. - play Boufal behind Ings and Adams and let front two build a partnership. And hope Moussa gets fit quickly. We are effectively in the bottom 3 now let alone the end of November!

Dangermouth Posted 7 October, 2019 Share Posted 7 October, 2019 Guess you should do your homework on Southgate and Ward-Prowse, he knows James quite well. "They" = plural, used after a semi-colon. Dangermouth Posted 7 October, 2019 Share Posted 7 October, 2019 Yesterday was a disgrace. JWP is a ****ing myth. there is no substance to the lad. What summed him up for me was defending in the left back position he got a knockdown and played a three yard sideways tap to the nearest red shirt already closed down by opponents. He is a ****ing idiot in football terms. Backwards, sideways, defends like Steven Davis, waves his arms, good at that, otherwise the only doubt yesterday was how high up the Chapel his mythical delivery was going to be. I havent even mentioned his lack of strength and pace. PEH seems to have lost his way. As somebody said previously he was standing around in space in the second half. Early in the first half we were attacking well down the left in the last third when he received the ball and played a forty yard ball back to a centre back. The midfield is dire. Romeu does his job well but the other two are a liability. If Hojbjerg played as a pair with Romeu it might work but in my opinion JWP is a waste of space. Time to give Armstrong a go as an alternative. Danso allegedly has pace, sooner or later we are going to have to give him a go. Maybe in place of PEH, (unlikely as he is the Captain) Ings is good at what he does but again is not the quickest so needs to be combined with a centre forward with pace. Boufal has looked lively but his end product is still lacking. Maybe 4-4-2 (we've tried everything and everybody else) With Armstrong/Boufal- Hojbjerg/Danso/ possibly give Slattery a go- Romeu -Redmond as a midfield and try Djenepo/Adams and Ings 10/9 We have to do something about the lack of pace from midfield together with the obsession within the defence and midfield playing multiple passes sideways and backwards eventually dropping the goalkeeper in it forcing a hurried clearance. Yoshida is one of the biggest culprits. We need to be much more proactive attack wise. Yesterday halftime 3-1 down we needed to take off JWP and put possibly Boufal on then on the hour if we weren't back in the game stck another attacker on or even two and go for it. We didn't made the safe like for like changes, took the wrong players off and lost 4-1 (that worked) I don't buy the JWP hype, or the PEH is a midfield playmaker. JWP gave the ball away in the Chelsea half for the first goal. Failed to get close, stood off, Mason Mount for the second and Stood off Mount again before the chip to Alonso for the third. PEH was nowhere for any of the goals except for deflecting the third past Gunn. Ralph needs to get a grip and do some radical thinking. More of the same isn't good enough or playing square pegs in round holes, Djenepo at left back. Bertrand is our best left back. I suspect his present problem is in front of him and isn't being sorted. Ralph needs to get it right and chuck his ego down the pan. Even if players faces don't fit if them playing gives us a proper blend then do it. We have no blend, that is obvious. The most important thing in any team game is that the sum of the parts provides a real team not a collection of individuals playing their own game. I agree. I've said before he's well-coached, but he's not a natural footballer i.e. he doesn't 'get the game' so he's not really a player in my eyes. I do think he's reached his ceiling now and I hope he has a good season so we can sell him (please).

Reinhard Posted 7 October, 2019 Share Posted 7 October, 2019 I have seen serveral games with RH as a coach in the German Bundesliga over the last years. His first credo was always that his teams run, run, run; against the ball, with the ball, without the ball. Close to the man. It was not always beautiful, but effective and forceful. Not giving up, strong defense. It was difficult to make goals against his teams. And most of his teams were medium in quality, except Leipzig. I couldn't see this in the last games, especially yesterday. What is going on? But I know RH is hungry for success, he wont give up, let's see. way down south Posted 8 October, 2019 Share Posted 8 October, 2019 my biggest fear is we won't get to the summer transfer window without being relegated as the january window is too much of a complicated window to use it to plug the gaping holes in the squad. as it is i reckon we'd need a minimum of 3 starting XI players in to be relatively competent. as stupid as player prices currently are it'll only be far worse in january. way down south Posted 8 October, 2019 Share Posted 8 October, 2019 We should not have loaned out Harrison Reed , have you seen his performances this season exactly what we need currently yes i saw a few of his games this and last season. thing about him is he certainly gets about the field and makes tackles and interceptions, but one thing he lacks IMO is ability to drive with the ball also as mentioned by one of his previous coaches he lacks positional decipline to be effective in the middle of the park in other words kind of a headless chicken who doesn't know where to be so runs around everywhere. if they can coach that into him at fulham then great as his engine is something special. now lemina had all the tools we are currently desperate for but if the attitude ain't there what can you do? was hoping slattery was the answer but he seems more of a static playmaker which isn't what we need as of now. Kingsbridge Saint Posted 9 October, 2019 Share Posted 9 October, 2019 I would be much more tolerant of our sideways backwards ball recycling midfield if every now and then it resulted in a good through ball, a change of pace and the creation of a chance. We go through 90 minutes of this turgidity week in week out and it rarely happens. Ralph needs to sort out what we are trying to do, who is supposed to be transitioning the play - and every now and then we should mix it up either by going long, or actually taking someone on. Boufal is really good at it, and should be in the side ahead of JWP or PEH every week. With Romeu, JWP and PEH we are so plodding and predictable and easy to defend against. The JWP dead ball specialism is a complete myth. Give me the number of free kicks he has and I will find the top corner with one in four. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes. And his corners - arm up, ball straight into first defender or ballooned long or to the keeper. Hopeless.

I agree with most of this especially the inability of PEH and JWP to run with the ball, even beat an opponent, make runs beyond the strikers, and shoot hard on target, either side of the goal not straight at the goalkeeper, and certainly not into the back of the stand. Along with the back four the three midfielders have been brain washed into aimless short passing going nowhere as a first and only thought. Well they have been found out and opponents are closing down and pinching the ball regularly and it will get worse unless we change tack. Against Chelsea without really attempting any astute passes JWP had a 76% accuracy rate. that means he gave away one in four passes attempted. WTF is he doing in the team. If Gao made some contractually mandated commitment to invest funds at the time of the purchase (which it would have to be for KL to try and enforce it) a) why wasn't any mention of this made at the time to mollify fans worried about the new owner, and b) why did club mouthpieces like Krueger immediately start talking about no change in strategy and being self-sustaining at the fans forum and in interviews?
