Saint Garrett Posted 8 August, 2019 Posted 8 August, 2019 Big season for him? Played the most minutes out of anyone in the squad in pre-season, in a position we don't have that many options in, especially if Lemina and Reed both depart this summer. Current options... DM Romeu Smallbone Stephens? Reed CM/AM JWP Hojbjerg Slattery Armstrong Lemina
tajjuk Posted 8 August, 2019 Posted 8 August, 2019 Is he a DM? Isn't he really more a playmaker and from what I remember isn't he fairly slight?
Gis Posted 8 August, 2019 Posted 8 August, 2019 Tall, similar build to a young Morgan Schneiderlin. Has a great shot and free kick in him. It's massive ask for someone of his age but with the right protection he could be a surprise regular.
niceandfriendly Posted 9 August, 2019 Posted 9 August, 2019 He really needs to lift some weights and eat more food.

Heisenberg Posted 22 February, 2020 Posted 22 February, 2020 Decent today especially 1st half hit the post and looked composed fair play lad
SuperSAINT Posted 22 February, 2020 Posted 22 February, 2020 Great stuff. Sounded like he impressed. Well done to the lad.
igsey Posted 22 February, 2020 Posted 22 February, 2020 Played well today, big improvement on Romeu going forward. We'll see more of him against weaker teams this season.
Manuel Posted 22 February, 2020 Posted 22 February, 2020 Yes, very composed. Of course the test will be whether he can cope against teams stronger in midfield than Villa were today...
Dusic Posted 22 February, 2020 Posted 22 February, 2020 Really liked his performance. Good first touch, careful passing, looked to play one touch where possible and was calm on the ball. Very promising. Reminded me a little of Schneiderlin in terms of build and the way he moves.
spyinthesky Posted 22 February, 2020 Posted 22 February, 2020 Really liked his performance. Good first touch, careful passing, looked to play one touch where possible and was calm on the ball. Very promising. Reminded me a little of Schneiderlin in terms of build and the way he moves. Spot on with your comments. I was concerned about involving him in a crucial game. However thought he did very well and hopefully one for the future
eurosaint Posted 22 February, 2020 Posted 22 February, 2020 Good vision and an eye for a pass ! Still a bit lightweight but doesn’t seem phased by the big stage ! Very promising and well done to Ralph for having faith in him !
JRM Posted 22 February, 2020 Posted 22 February, 2020 We need a decent song for him, name should help, going to be a top player.
Badger Posted 22 February, 2020 Posted 22 February, 2020 Really liked his performance. Good first touch, careful passing, looked to play one touch where possible and was calm on the ball. Very promising. Reminded me a little of Schneiderlin in terms of build and the way he moves. Didn't get there today but on seeing him v Huddersfield that's not a comparison I'd make. Schneiderlin even when he first arrived had a physical presence about him (think he is 6' or near to it), whereas Smallbone looked aptly named and a bit of a shortar$e and lightweight. No reason why he can't make it but if he does progress then we need a bit more strength and power in midfield to compensate.
Turkish Posted 22 February, 2020 Posted 22 February, 2020 Shame slattery appears to be a bit of a wrong un as we look to have two very good player in the making there.
beatlesaint Posted 22 February, 2020 Posted 22 February, 2020 He looks very promising based upon today, especially first half.
Turkish Posted 22 February, 2020 Posted 22 February, 2020 Smallbone, score for me now Will smallbone, score for me
Heisenberg Posted 22 February, 2020 Posted 22 February, 2020 Will Smallbone is red and white, red and white & he hates pompey!
S-Clarke Posted 22 February, 2020 Posted 22 February, 2020 Good touch, good awareness of those around him, good passing. A neat and tidy player really, unlucky with that deflected shot too - Reina was beaten all ends up with that!
Turkish Posted 22 February, 2020 Posted 22 February, 2020 Nice shout from Ian Wright on match of the day, said he was brilliant.
niceandfriendly Posted 23 February, 2020 Posted 23 February, 2020 He really needs to lift some weights and eat more food. Somebody clearly listened. He looked much more of a unit yesterday. Great performance too.
OttawaSaint Posted 23 February, 2020 Posted 23 February, 2020 Thought he was really good today. Didn’t seem nervous or out of place at all. Pleased for him, he’s been at Saints since he was 8 years old!
niceandfriendly Posted 23 February, 2020 Posted 23 February, 2020 Will Smallbone Because size doesn't matter, size doesn't matter Will Smallbone It's what you do with it that counts, what you do with it that counts. Our Willy Smallbone Honestly, you really do satisfy all our needs

SuperSAINT Posted 28 June, 2020 Posted 28 June, 2020 Missed all the game today. How did he play? I read he played as one of the "two No.10's"?

S-Clarke Posted 28 June, 2020 Posted 28 June, 2020 He's a tidy little player, good awareness and ability to turn in midfield to feed Ings for the first goal. Defo. a great squad player for us, but I don't think we should be seeing him as week in week out first team just yet. Potential is big though from what I've seen of him.

Has got a goal or 2 in him as well judging from his academy days. Love seeing academy players come through the system. Should save us a few quid in the market as well.

I also believe he got the assist for the first goal. We really don't have a lot of strength in that area and I'd rather give him a run now and develop him than to stick with hojbjerg who has been disappointing anyway and probably isn't going to be with us next year.
saintwbu Posted 28 June, 2020 Posted 28 June, 2020 His simple work for the first goal was such an important difference from what we often see from PEH. It was an almost identical situation to what PEH found himself in before the first Arsenal goal the other day. Both came in and received the ball with back to opposition goal and space behind them. One had no idea what was behind him and bounced it back towards his own goal immediately, one turned onto the front foot and played forward. One ended with us 1-0 down and one ended with us 1-0 up! I thought Smallbone was great against Villa at home, and good today, really like the look of him. 1

Baird of the land Posted 28 June, 2020 Posted 28 June, 2020 I thought he was neat and tidy. I’d call it a solid performance rather than impressive. Hopefully he’ll get more experience this season, which will hopefully give him platform to keep improving.
OttawaSaint Posted 28 June, 2020 Posted 28 June, 2020 I really like this kid. Keeps it nice and simple but gets his head up and moves the ball quickly. I think that’s really the key to success. You can win the ball as much as you like but if you either a) give the ball away cheaply or b) funnel it back to the defence and let the opposition regroup then it’s kinda pointless.
skintsaint Posted 29 June, 2020 Posted 29 June, 2020 Personally would keep him in the team and let PEH stew on the bench while negotiating his move away.

I'd agree, we are safe, PEH doesn't want to be here clearly and Smallbone needs games to develop, these next 6 games would seem perfect for him IMO, a start against Man City would be a real test and experience for him against that midfield.

He wasn’t really playing instead of PEH yesterday though, Romeu was. Smallbone was playing in Armstrong’s role. 1
saintquin Posted 29 June, 2020 Posted 29 June, 2020 Thought he had a very good game for one his age but, wouldn't say he was great as he seemed to disappear a bit as the game went on. Like the look of him!
Turkish Posted 18 January, 2021 Posted 18 January, 2021 Poor lad, it didn't look good when he did it. Lets hope he makes a swift recovery.
JRM Posted 18 January, 2021 Posted 18 January, 2021 Gutted for him, looked quality on Saturday and had really come on, hopefully he can recover in time for start of next season.

S-Clarke Posted 18 January, 2021 Posted 18 January, 2021 Questions need to be asked about WTF we let him come back on the pitch. Idiots. But feel so bad for the guy, he had actually performed pretty well and looked decent....he was always a good option for us, but now he's out of the equation for quite some time. I'd say half a year is a positive estimate.

Bizarre 1
Saint Garrett Posted 18 January, 2021 Author Posted 18 January, 2021 Awful injury, and one he may never recover from. McQueen still hasn't returned from doing his about 3 years ago. I really hope it's not too bad and he'll be back in time for the start of next season. Massively unfortunate though. Wishing him a speedy recovery.
