It's difficult to sell the idea that the party has learned anything when there are idiots like her being appointed.

Word is that Johnson now is deliberately bringing more useless people into the cabinet to try and stitch up his successor. Not that you can be much more useless than Johnson.

Oh man, we'll have Grayling up next, this is getting beyond silly.

They do realise that Boris is going nowhere and will need to be forcibly evicted?

I see your Grant Shapps and trump him with Kemi Badenoch. 😁😁

If you still want to play how about Suella Braverman ?? I think that she would give Grayling a run for your money in the contest for most inept Cabinet Minister.

What a state the Conservative party is now in.

This is the perfect example of why I don't do politics. If someone disagrees with a leftie, they get name calling, sarcasm and pelters. The so called tolerant party LOL.

Another Walter Mitty dreamworld post.  Go on, explain how that will 'stitch up' his successor?  Cabinet members can be appointed and removed with minimal effort and absolutely zero reasons needed.  Any successor is likely to want to 'shuffle' the majority of the cabinet anyway.

Unlikely. He's gotta plug gaps with whoever will take the jobs. Decent people will either stand to replace him or stand back and have nothing to do with him. The new PM will make up his/her own cabinet anyway, and only a few (eg Wallace) are likely to stay in post.

He makes a good point though. Your style is a hybrid of unnecessary antagonism and mostly leftie opinion. No room for discussion. You're right that this is the worst government in memory though.

When I first came to this place I thought it was really hostile and any opinion (which was just football back then) was shouted down. Let’s say I have embraced the style

That’s typical of most forums. Tell you what though, why not come out with an opinion and see what reaction you get? I mean so far you’ve moaned about this thread being an echo chamber but you have the ability to change that.

What about a centrist Liberal Democrat voter like me then who has voted for different parties as well? Also, try not to use tabloid slang like Leftie (which is increasingly used since the referendum to describe Labour, Lib Dem, Green, Remainer Conservatives en masse and anyone non populist/UKIP), it tends to get people’s backs up. Look at the way any candidates in this upcoming leadership race are being ruled out if there is any hint of remain eg Hunt, Tugendhat etc. Also, they were purged from all key responsible positions by Johnson. If he had more Clark’s and Bucklands with different opinions around the cabinet table and less Raabs, Patels and Bravermans, he’d still be in the job. Even Thatcher had more of a balance eg Heseltine, Clarke, Whitelaw etc, people I’d have voted for.

You say you don’t do politics but come on and have a dig at those with presumably a different political view to you? I have been on this site for years mate and can assure you that it works for both sides. In fact the far right supporters used to be much worse. There are more people now speaking out against the right (probably because of the awful mess Johnson has made of things and prior to that, Cameron and May). You can guarantee that there will be plenty of “yeah but Corbyn,”yeah but Abbott,” etc in response to anything partly left of centre along with the name calling. Some time back I posted against the likes of Katie Hopkins and Tommy Robinson and got dog’s abuse from a few right supporters.
Anyway, back to what is going on at the moment. Most of the names thrown into the hat so far aren’t inspiring. Not that I get a vote, but as a citizen of this country I would like to see someone like Rory Stewart as PM. It’s a shame that Johnson drove him out of politics. Most of the rest seem slightly less dodgy than Johnson but have been tarred with the same brush. I’m not sure how anyone can think that throwing names like Corbyn and Abbott around makes up for the total ineptitude of the likes of Patel, Dorries, Hancock, Raab, Shnapps, Truss, Rees-Mogg etc, etc. The only upside is that, hopefully, enough damage has been done to the Tory brand that they will get themselves voted out at the next election and we can finally find a government who works for the whole of the country and not just a select few (are you listening Sunak?).

A sensible proposition.  Followed by this nonsense!

Far right :mcinnes:

Polarisation seems to be a growing trend, if you don't fully support an opinion you are branded the polar opposite - don't like Starmer, then you're far right and have swastika tattoos.  Frankly, those that hold these opinions (like soggy), need to grow up.

Please refer me to the post on this thread when someone who doesn't like Starmer is accused of having swastika tattoos. I could do with a laugh.

I think I've figured out Boris's cunning plan....  If he makes sure there are loads of candidates for the vacant No10 position, then it will take plenty of time for the voting procedure to be carried out.  If he can string it out until 21st July, he can keep his grubby mits on the keys until after the summer recess in September.

And you all thought he was thick!  Not even Baldrick could come up with that one.

(For Tamesaint's benefit /sarcasm).

Grant Shapps can deliver tax cuts as he is going to save money by digitalising public services. Man’s a genius. Just mirror all those efficiencies in policing across all departments and we are laughing.

So you complain about people polarising those with different views by .... polarising Soggy.

Lol.  Soggy polarises himself.  How many times has he mentioned 'far right' when referring to Tory supporters, whilst throwing in Tommy Robinson supporter quotes?

It's so refreshing to hear all of the PM candidates rolling out great new ideas on every subject from education to transport.

Last week - not a single idea between them, just plodding along defending big dog, parroting nonsense.

This week when there's a greasy pole to climb - loads of great ideas!

Any thoughts on who Boris has lined up to get a Peerage before he goes?

Nadine Dorries for one, Boris's Dad, any number of Tory benefactors, Lulu Litle, Jennifer Acuri, mates from the Bullington Club, Michael Fabricant, Chris Cope, Peppa Pig etc etc  etc..........

Following the worst cabinet in history, the reserve team immediately demonstrates why they weren't allowed near power before - two of the newbies couldn't even make it into the building without dropping a clanger.

Looking at the 'skills' of people like Shapps, Patel, Truss, Zahawi and Dorries, I fear most departments must be in absolute chaos right now and will require major overhauls.

Johnson has turned us into a shambles of a country - leading the world??

God help us, get some decent people in for a change, please.

Listening to them all after 12 years of rule and all this time all they needed to do was cut taxes and find  efficiencies in all public services. Now they are going to do that so all great and that is the master plan. Worry8ng that down to 200,000 old rich people to elect us the PM for next 2 years.

FWIW I prefer Sunak as the best of a very shit bunch. How did it get to this?!

That's all they need to say for that constituency. Easy peasy. Getting elected by 65 million is a different challenge though.

Imo the Tories need a whole fresh start with a leader and cabinet not tainted by the past. What Graham Brady and the 1922 committee apparently want is a super quick election and a high number of MPs needed to get nominated - which inevitably favours current and recent ministers with a high profile. Prepare for more of the same with a different wrapper

That's because Boris turfed out/forced out anyone competent, it was all very much intentional.  But now they're left with very low quality.

This is why a change in PM should trigger an election as they're just coming up with stupid right wing policies to appeal to the Tory members with no regard for the actual population.

Most of them are too stupid, like most populists, to understand the complexity. Dumbed down to promises that sound good. They have such a history of delivering too. Remember it was these twats that wanted the NI hike which was incredible grab of lowest paid people’s income.

Rather than bribing us with phoney tax cuts, why don't they tell us what they are going to do about this ?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-62123691

"Domestic energy bills will rise faster this winter than previously forecast by the energy regulator Ofgem, its chief executive has admitted to MPs."

They aren't bribing "us" as we have zero influence on the outcome. All they need to do is lie well enough to convince their peers they will do a good job. Once they've got the keys to easy street they aren't going to give a shit!

You’re giving yourself a pat on the back because you “spoke out” against the right by posting against Katy Hopkins and Tommy Robinson on a Southampton football forum 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

You’re either nuts or you vastly overestimate the significance of this forum

The counter argument to this is that if an election needed to be called there is no way the BoJo would have been ousted in the first place.  There's no perfect solution but this is the lesser of two evils

If a PM with a large Parliamentary majority has to give up due to ill health half way through his term, would that require a GE, or can they simply hand over to a successor selected by their party ?
