Mr X Posted 20 January, 2009 Posted 20 January, 2009 If I was the duck hunter (shudder) I would be getting rid of Jan with immediate effect from the end of today. Jan has my sympathy but in all honesty he shouldn't have accepted the job, cant blame him though. This gives us nearly a couple of weeks to get the man who best suits the task of keeping us up, somone with a track record of what it takes to survive in this league and they would have to be skilled in 'player motivation' god knows we could do with that! The question is would Lord Lowe know the right candidate if it bit him on the arse? My guess is we could end up with an even cheaper option as there will be nothing in the cofffers if we have to pay off Jan. I would probably appoint stuart henderson as care-taker manager to be honest he knows most of the players really well. However I dont think this meeting will end with Jan gone sadly, I think the norwich game will decide his future. You would think that if Jan goes Lowe has to aswell but we all know he won't be doing that!
The Majestic Channon Posted 20 January, 2009 Posted 20 January, 2009 He did do just that.... (And I'm sure I've put this on here before!) Strachan wreaks his revenge Gordon Strachan was apoplectic after Southampton's home defeat by Everton last weekend, describing it as ''the worst performance since I've been here''. The players were told to report for extra training at 10 o'clock on Sunday morning, though when they arrived there was no sign of the manager. At 10.20am coach Dennis Rofe received a call on his mobile phone suggesting they continue warming up and Strachan would ''be there soon''. Another 20 minutes went by when Rofe's phone bleeped again, and his master's voice said he still ''had things to do'' but would be arriving soon. Two hours dragged by and Strachan rang for the third time. ''Right,'' he told the players via Rofe, ''I've wasted your time this morning like you wasted my time yesterday''. And the line went dead. Ha ha, fantastic. those were the days.
Gemmel Posted 20 January, 2009 Posted 20 January, 2009 This is just brilliant remember at the time it happening and shows what a great manager/motivator GS was. I'm sure i remember reading or hearing that a young Paul Telfer had to go and live with WGS for a while after he got into a few scrapes...... im sure Mrs S was over the moon!
The Majestic Channon Posted 20 January, 2009 Posted 20 January, 2009 JP is about to be sacked by the looks of it. And his assistant coach has already been put on gardening leave. A step in the right direction. But, Lowe has to realise that this was HIS appointment and HIS call to go for this system. It is an admission of failure and so along with JPs sacking Lowe himself HAS to leave the club now for good. If he dares to stay on after this falacy then I am afraid the fans will really lose the plot. Time to go Lowe - forever. I'm praying jan gets the sack. Cant see it though if i'm honest, i don't think lowelife could stomach admitting he's made yet another disastarous appointment.Besides jan is happy to be his puppet . We are ****ed.

That was Noel Whelan, he had a habit of drinking to much and acting like a moron, nearly ended his career when he put his foot through a shop window and cut his ankle up on the shards.
dubai_phil Posted 20 January, 2009 Posted 20 January, 2009 Oh just remembered. We're a PLC so don't look on the OS or Echo for any announcements. It likely has to go to Stock Exchange first

The Majestic Channon Posted 20 January, 2009 Posted 20 January, 2009 Forget jan getting sacked, almost certain it won't happen , not this season anyway.we are stuck with him.

Too chummy = no respect. It probably will be an internal appointment which will not help our cause. But what we NEED is an experienced manager who has the respect of players, kicks arses when necessary, and is tactically good. We were in this situation last season, I remember. Sadly, Lowe is too afraid of managers who stand up to him to appoint the savour we need.
eelpie Posted 20 January, 2009 Posted 20 January, 2009 http://www.londonstockexchange.com/en-gb/pricesnews/prices/system/detailedprices.htm?sym=GB0007922114GBGBXAIMI0792211SOO Since Lowe returned the share price has fallen from 33p to 22p. Not his fault of course. Just a coincidence.
glkdcdes Posted 20 January, 2009 Posted 20 January, 2009 If Lowe really intended to do what is right for the club he would simply go. He will not do this. What he means is he will do what is best for his survival. I suspect we will have some statement along the lines of following the meeting it was clear from Poortvleit and the players that they were at a loss to know what to do to improve results and on this basis Lowe will state regretfully it has been agreed that Poortvleit will stand down with immediate effect. If he plays it right he can stretch things out until the transfer window is closed with out a new manager. This will enable him to get any players out he can [if there are any takers] unhindered, and without the pressure of a new manager wanting players in. Lowe is on a course to take us down. If he had kept Pearson i beleive we would have stayed up. Sadly all we can do is watch him destroy our once proud club and its very sad.

Shouldn't have lent money to people who couldn't pay it back. As far as I'm concerned if they all went under it would be a gift to humanity. Then we could get new banks who used the old values when loaning money. ie do you make enough to pay us back?.
Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 20 January, 2009 Posted 20 January, 2009 Sneak preview of tomorrow's coverage of the crisis meeting in the Echo: Crisis meeting at Saints! Whole staff interrogated as Rupert's train picture goes missing. "I don't care if we lost again at the weekend, where's my bl**dy painting", Lowe was heard to shout.
St Marco Posted 20 January, 2009 Posted 20 January, 2009 would not be surprised if Jan will be pushed back into a coaching role maybe assistant manager while Wotte takes over as manager. Which would just mean a different yes man in charge playing the same way we already are. I just can't see Lowe firing Jan, moving him to coach while promoting your reserve manager seems more his style.
glkdcdes Posted 20 January, 2009 Posted 20 January, 2009 just struck me Lowe holding meeting with players and Poortvleit. How patronising to the manager. Seems to only serve the purpose of underming him. If he was a decent man manager, Lowe would hold the meeting with the manager only.Plus if its about football what does Lowe know. Or does he think hes going to motivate them out of the hole we are in.The whole situation is wrong, who could work happilly in that kind of set up.
bridge too far Posted 20 January, 2009 Posted 20 January, 2009 So I'm asking again.... Does anyone know what time the meeting started / is scheduled to end / ended? Surely we must have SOME spies there ATM?

Torbay Saint Posted 20 January, 2009 Posted 20 January, 2009 Does anyone think we (including the echo) may have the wrong end of the stick? Lowe is meeting with the players and manager, which as stated is very unusual. He, as at yesterday, was supportive of Jan. Could the meeting be about administration and a points loss rather than a change of manager?
St Marco Posted 20 January, 2009 Posted 20 January, 2009 At the time of writing JP is head coach,MW runs the academy and looks after the reserves. We don't have a manager or an assistant manager. Well you can call it a different name but it is still the same thing. Jan currently is employed as Southampton FC Head Coach but if you asked him if he were the manager of the club he will say yes. Wotte is the reserve team head coach. Head coach and manager are the same thing. The only difference is a manager in name gets more control over things such as buying players but looking at the Benitez saga i wonder if even that is true. Having lived in america before i know Head Coach is more in line with their sports, just they also have a general manager of the franchise. At the end of the day Jans job is to get the club winning game, same as a manager, just somehow i doubt he has any say in any of the things off the field hence why he has been called a head coach.

Could the meeting be about administration and a points loss rather than a change of manager? if the thingy about Hockaday being placed on gardening leave is right it probably has something to do with coaching and results. I mean lets imagine that under coach X,having been turned down for the job at Y,imaginess himself as the next coach of Z. So he stirs the sh*te and undermines head coach U.The result is that the players no longer know who to listen to and keep f*cking up as to where they're supposed to be playing and what they're supposed to be doing. Could the meeting be about administration and a points loss rather than a change of manager? The players bit makes me wonder. If anything it puts the kids in a harder position - even MORE pressure. We know that the senior players all think Lowe's plan is ********. ie Wotton, Euell, Skacel and John. We know that the kids are worse now than when the plan started. And some think its ******** and have voted with their feet ie Cork. We know that JP has admitted that we need MEN (an admission if any from the manager that Lowe's plan is ********) - see last programme notes. So, perhaps Lowe wants to put them all back in their place and give a rising team talk akin to his great Dressing Room chats to get them all back on message and back on track. Perhaps Lowe is merely reading the whole lot the riot act and telling them they can succeed with a Churchillian speech? If so, we'll shortly find out and if so... I predict a fans riot.

Sad as it may sound I kept a few of the Strachan 'isms' over the years, paper clippings etc. Some of them seem even more appropriate now given the situation in which we find ourselves at SFC. If nothing else they're a pretty good read - certainly more entertaining than recent match reports. As always UTS
bridge too far Posted 20 January, 2009 Posted 20 January, 2009 2 others in my family...that makes 4 in the Bay. One more for a five aside team! Maybe I can help out I do work down there quite a lot
Graffito Posted 20 January, 2009 Posted 20 January, 2009 "Right now, as I sit here, Jan has my full support" Hardly a ringing endorsement. What support will he offer when he's standing up, or having a tom tit? The risk of not changing the manager is greater than the risk of changing the manager even if we might get another one of Lowe's dopey appointments.
