sydney_saint Posted 9 June, 2019 Posted 9 June, 2019 If the Champions League is any indication, one of the unfortunate side impacts of VAR is that there will be more penalties next season, particularly reasonably soft ones. If this is the case, and I do realise it is an if, it would mean that the penalty taker becomes a more essential part of our team. Based on our current squad, who would you have taking our penalties? For me it is JWP- he strikes a football so cleanly and all of our good penalty takers in recent years (MLT, Beattie, Lambert) have all done the same. I guess Ings would also consider himself as the penalty taker as well.
benjii Posted 9 June, 2019 Posted 9 June, 2019 As you say, it will be JWP or Ings, unless we sign someone better. I think the question of the impact of VAR on the number of penalties is an interesting one. It will also be interesting to see if the laws are applied consistently throughout the season or if there is an initial peak then a tailing off (like shirt pulls at corners, which were penalised quite vigorously for a few weeks before being ignored again). I hope we don't get to a situation where manufactured contact with the hand/arm is resulting in lots of penalties. It will ruin the sport.
paulwantsapint Posted 9 June, 2019 Posted 9 June, 2019 We need a reliable penalty taker who is going to be on the pitch when we get them ala Beattie or Lambert
tajjuk Posted 10 June, 2019 Posted 10 June, 2019 Yeh JWP. Think Bertrand is also a decent dead ball taker.
East Kent Saint Posted 10 June, 2019 Posted 10 June, 2019 Sign Pickford , we could always use another keeper
Dusic Posted 10 June, 2019 Posted 10 June, 2019 All of Ings penalties for us have been well taken so see no reason he wouldn't be first choice when on the pitch. JWP an excellent taker as well but good for strikers to get the confidence of scoring.
ozzmeister Posted 11 June, 2019 Posted 11 June, 2019 Is JWP going to be an every game starter (I'm a big fan so for me he would) - Just not sure where he fits into the potential 4-3-3 formation currently.
Saint Garrett Posted 11 June, 2019 Posted 11 June, 2019 Is JWP going to be an every game starter (I'm a big fan so for me he would) - Just not sure where he fits into the potential 4-3-3 formation currently. In the midfield 3?
Kingsbridge Saint Posted 13 June, 2019 Posted 13 June, 2019 Not sure Ings is a good idea given the minutes he gets on the pitch. Anyone know how many minutes he played last season in the League against the 3,420 available? I would guess 50% at most.
