saint boggy Posted 20 January, 2009 Share Posted 20 January, 2009 i used to steward at SMS. the majority of stewards work there to supplement their income , be it because they have families or are students etc. i AM a fan of SFC and have been ALL my life (as have 90% of stewards). i go to as many away games as finances allow, and saints are in my heart, so DON'T tell me that I'M not a fan..........i couldn't afford to go to watch matches once i got a mortgage and had kids, so my husband and i decided to start stewarding, as a way of still being surrounded by the matchday atmosphere and all the passion that football brings, without being out-of-pocket. some of you should remeber that the people who steward are just normal people like each and every one of you, like someone else said, no matter where you work you will always get a dickhead or two, but don't tar them all with the same brush. Big Bad Bob Posted 20 January, 2009 Share Posted 20 January, 2009 My point was, that no proper fan would a) sit with your back to a saints match. b) Take money FROM the club. So now we're back to the "I'm a better fan than you argument" how about maybe the 'fan' can't afford to go to football but wants to still 'be there' and get as much as they can of the atmosphere. I don't know how much they get paid but it sure as hell ain't enough for some of the abuse that gets put their way!!
Marsdinho Posted 20 January, 2009 Share Posted 20 January, 2009 We all make our own decisions on where and how we spend our cash, and ALL of us would like more money. Its about priorities, yours was having kids, mine is watching saints.

Durleyfos Posted 20 January, 2009 Share Posted 20 January, 2009 Exactly, for about 15 minutes I didn't take my eyes off the front of the Northam and the steward was DEFINATELY hit first. However, the way they treated a young teenage boy as they tried to eject him from the ground was disgraceful. Whether he was in the wrong or not, they shouldn't have dragged him along by his arms, nearly breaking them in the process. He wasn't even resisting. If he's old enough to throw a punch at a steward, he's old enough to face the consequences.

Marsdinho Posted 20 January, 2009 Share Posted 20 January, 2009 Look, i think we are all getting a bit confused. I didnt say that I was a better fan than anyone on here. the fact that I dont have a season ticket or even went to the Doncaster game (was at a racing event at Ascot) means that I cant be an uber fan. Some people on here were saying that they are saints fans "just like the rest of us" well i guess then that my match day experience is a little differernt to theirs. I also guess that my idea of supporting a team is different to theirs as well. Can I just add though, that if you think working at SMS is to "safeguard your family's financial stability" then may I suggest that you look into a better full time job as you are on very thin ground there. What is it? £35 roughly for a days work?

The racing at ascot was booked a long time ago. The reason for going was that it was my sister-in-laws birthday treat organised by her husband (not a Saints fan). I didnt have to mention it and could have just pretended I was at the game. I stated it on here to prove to other posters that I dont consider myself "a better fan than them" FYI - up until Doncaster, I hadnt missed a game at home all season. ivangolac Posted 20 January, 2009 Share Posted 20 January, 2009 Typical posts from some realy thickies on here I would suggest et al Lordswoodsaints, ivangolac, . If you "hard cases" would just watch the game and not start giving it out, you wouldn't get hurt. If you ain't happy with the standard of stewarding, do something positive and apply to join, albeit the two aforementioned idiots would probably be wasting their time, judging by the poor standard of their postings. I have been going for 30+ plus years, my mates the same and how often have we had a scrap with stewards...never, why? cos they are there to do a job, which centres around public safety and public order. So as far as i'm concerned if you are going to gob off at them don't come winging on here if you get a slap instead go home to mummy, if you happen to know who she is! What a **** you are ! For your information i was not involved in any of the bother in the Itchen but was close enough to witness it . For most of the game there was good natured banter with the stewards about people sitting down (although as someone else pointed out ALL the boxes behind block 4 were empty). In the middle of the second half one steward in particular singled out a bloke and told him was going out , the guy refused so the steward got some back up . A struggle ensued when the stewards decided to get heavy handed , unfortunately for them they bit off a bit more than they could chew. Your limp wristed post suggests your a blanket hugger from the Kingsland. The only time you stand up is when your leaving 10 minutes from the end to miss the traffic , tw&t

landford.saint Posted 20 January, 2009 Share Posted 20 January, 2009 As much as i don't like them, the Steward was punched first. Hence why he was taken out by a number of the. I think that proves why we should all be sure of our facts before making allegations, I did not see the youth's punch, but I believe you totally. Not best way for steward to react, but understandable given that he was punched first.
benjii Posted 20 January, 2009 Share Posted 20 January, 2009 I saw a steward punched in the face by some lardy little gob-****e and all he did was shake his head and tell the lad to stop. The lad was then, quite rightly ejected, squeeling and wriggling like a bloated little piggy. How many on here can say they would have had the restraint not to lay the little idiot out? Having said that it looked as though they were a bit heavy handed with one of the lads who got on the pitch, but frankly, if you leg it on to the pitch you're risking a bit of a bundle. He should just be thankful that David Speedie doesn't play for us anymore

Didn't he get taken to police? I am surprised. But still if that was their reaction, good for them, youth gets a bit of a dap and a few scaped knees and elbows for his stupidity. Gets kicked out and gets to spectate another day. Possibly the best result to expect out of a bad situation.

SaintsChick79 Posted 21 January, 2009 Share Posted 21 January, 2009 It makes me laugh how people are calling for stewards out and the stewards are this and that!! Without them the games couldnt go ahead! When the team is winning they are ur best friend yet when the team is losing its all their fault!! Why should any person put up with being sworn at, personally abused, threated, spat at, physically assulted the list goes on... all because saints are losing!! Would people treat there bank manager shop assistant in the same way if things didnt go thier way I doubt it! It is an offence to go on the pitch at anytime weather the game is in play or not, and it is also an offence to stand in a seated area some people should take a few mins to read the back of their beloved match ticket or list of ground regulations outside each turnstile these rules are not made up by a steward they are there to ensure spectator saftey! and as for weather they are from pompey or not does not matter how many people in soton have people from pompey in their work place? do they do the job different because of where they live? Time for people to grow up and see bigger picture. God forbid some people should ever really need a stewards help cos They prob enjoy helping people more than having to deal with some of the s**t ive seen some deal with! She-ra Posted 22 January, 2009 Share Posted 22 January, 2009 As people have previously mentioned, in the Itchen, the action by the steward was uncalled for. Everyone was enjoying the game and had sat down, then when it looked like we might be coming back into it for a min we stood up and one steward waded in. It was only at that point that things turned nasty. Yes, they have a job too do and I would not obstruct that. However, the steward attempting to yank the guy over the seats was unreasonable force and affected not only that fan but others around him- including small children. Afterwards, it turned out ( from speaking to a regular steward) that the other one was not part of their regular team. Thankfully. I can't comment on the problems that happened elsewhere in the stands.
