Arsenal vs Saints - Match Thread

Our defence looks completely unorganized. Ralph should recognize we just don't have the players to go 3 in the back like he wants. Its about finding a scheme to win with what you have, not just putting in a formation regardless of the talent because you like it

You got infracted for being a massively repetitive ****. They’d do well to give another few. Give it a rest, what is it you want? A medal for being the most negative **** on here?

I could give him mine

Someone said we look dazed and confused - and we do. The poor defending is obvious; but the midfield has been totally overrun - is Ward-Prowse playing in mid-field? And we look to have only Armstrong and Redmond as attacking players - feeble and embarrassing so far.

Yoshida put in a MOTM performance away to Chelsea - interceptions and clearances by the dozen - and Arsenal were always going to pose similar threats the way they come forward. So why is Yoshida on the bench?!?!

I wonder what they were doing in Tenerife as this is poor against a pretty average Arsenal side.

There were times during the half that we put some real pressure on Arsenal's defence and then typically one of their players went down injured and the momentum went and we didn't get it back. No reason why we shouldn't get it back if we start the second half on the front foot and don't allow Arsenal to settle. The main problem though, is that we lack the bite up top. Get a goal back early in the half and get in Arsenal's faces and it might be a different story. Take off Stephens and go 4-4-2 perhaps, with a striker up top? What have we got to lose when two down?

I thought we looked pretty good going forward for the first 20 minutes but the usual incompetence in defence meant they had two chances and found themselves 2 up. Since then it’s been pipe and slippers for Arsenal.

Big half time talk needed and if we can grab the next goal we might have a chance.

This was always going to happen with the formation we are playing. Five at the back works if you have full backs who can bomb up and down at will, providing support in both midfield and attack. However, you also need a striker who can hold the ball up, and an attacking midfielder or two to make up a minimum of five attacking players. That allows the three defenders and two holding midfielders to defend. What we end up with is eight players at the back, all getting in each other's way, trying to defend zonally, without a clue of who to mark. Too many cooks and all that.
