That doesn’t sound like someone not knuckling down, although maybe there is more to this than seems.

That's a guy who's trained multiple champion boxers. Ralph seemingly thought he was fat and lazy so put him on a plane. Gilly's judgement on these matters is sound. Often, when moving into mixed age groups these players struggle because they can’t rely on their physical attributes. This may, or may not be the case with Slattery. This interesting contrast is Smallbone. He was physically less dominant than Slattery, and as he was rotated around various midfield positions in the U23’s you saw his technical attributes come to the fore. No doubt Smallbone will be on the weights over the next 12 months, and you will see his shape change. Hojberg was the same. His shape changed dramatically after the first 12 months, and during that period he lost some of his touch and balance, most of which he regained after the programme goal was reached and his regime changed. Of course Ralph is the best judge....but at this stage I don't see a good enough player in Slattery or Smallbone.
Snwilliams10 Posted 22 August, 2020 Share Posted 22 August, 2020 It would be really good if we can get these lads out with Championship teams for the season. It seems strange to me to expect young lads who have played hardly any senior football to come into a premier league first team and make an impact. You have to be a very good prospect to make that work e.g. Bale, Walcott, Shaw, Oxlade Chamberlain etc. Harrison Reed seems to have benefitted from that process. Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham, Harry Wilson, Conor Callagher, Rhian Brewster all seem to have benefitted. If we can’t place our best young players with Championship teams then can we honestly say they are good enough for our first team?

It is strange, as you say he was in very good shape so not down to fitness. I wonder if it’s a similar situation to Hoedt. He also came back in really good shape and gave Ralph a bit of back chat preseason, something about not being given a fair crack under him and was shipped out straight away. He was the most senior nailed on starter. He's decent captain material, even if he wasn't in the first team plans. On the move, it'll do him good, if he plays. He needs a run of games and then a move to fulfil his potential. It's a shame it hasn't worked out here. I don't know what went on with him and Ralph. It all seems a bit odd. Brumsaint Posted 15 January, 2021 Share Posted 15 January, 2021 Shame it didn't work out, but ahead of him in the thoughts of the manager for a CM role now (based on who's been on the bench) are: JWP Romeu Diallo Smallbone Jankewitz Chauke That's a lot of players when there are only two spots in the first team. I wish him luck at Gillingham and hope he secures a permanent deal somewhere in the summer. I guess a minimal fee and sell on clause are the best we can hope for now. Young player used to success, bigged up all his short life, his sometimes cocky behaviour gets misinterpreted by some middled aged ordinary bloke who still harbours an erroneous idea that he could have made it if he had the luck and the attention these youngsters get. The same was said about Harrison Reed, he's gone on to be a prem player.

Something was amiss when he was left out of the pre season tour in 2019. Someone apparently itk said it was because he returned fat. He didn't. He spent a lot of time in a boxing gym. His trainer, a proper experienced boxing man, said "He’s been an absolute pleasure to train, always gives 100% and has done everything asked of him. Straight 2 hour sessions...he will be going into pre-season training next week fitter than ever before. Good luck and take a bow Mr Slattery, you have done yourself proud". That doesn't fit with the fat lad with a bad attitude the apparent itk's talk of. Thus, why he was actually omitted was never clear. Since then he's not had a look in, just reserve team footy, that brief loan in Holland and now the Gillingham loan. Sometimes it just doesn't work out with some players and some managers. Hopefully he'll get games at Gillingham and get a move. Edited 19 January, 2021 by egg
