Personally I think there's a good player in there, but Ralph seemingly has issues with him. If he can knuckle down and fulfil his potential, I think he's got something to offer.

It’s a bit strange as last summer slattery was training at golden ring to get himself as fit as possible for the new season, then put straight  out on loan. That doesn’t sound like someone not knuckling down, although maybe there is more to this than seems.

Indeed he was Del. Gilly was impressed with him, described him as super fit with a great attitude. That's a guy who's trained multiple champion boxers. Ralph seemingly thought he was fat and lazy so put him on a plane. Gilly's judgement on these matters is sound.

Slattery was well ahead of his peers at 15, 16 but he was also physically stronger than his peers at an early age.  Often, when moving into mixed age groups these players struggle because they can’t rely on their physical attributes.  This may, or may not be the case with Slattery.  This interesting contrast is Smallbone.  He was physically less dominant than Slattery, and as he was rotated around various midfield positions in the U23’s you saw his technical attributes come to the fore.  No doubt Smallbone will be on the weights over the next 12 months, and you will see his shape change.   Hojberg was the same.  His shape changed dramatically after the first 12 months, and during that period he lost some of his touch and balance, most of which he regained after the programme goal was reached and his regime changed.

Of course Ralph is the best judge....but at this stage I don't see a good enough player in Slattery or Smallbone.

It would be really good if we can get these lads out with Championship teams for the season. It seems strange to me to expect young lads who have played hardly any senior football to come into a premier league first team and make an impact. You have to be a very good prospect to make that work e.g. Bale, Walcott, Shaw, Oxlade Chamberlain etc.

Harrison Reed seems to have benefitted from that process. Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham, Harry Wilson, Conor Callagher, Rhian Brewster all seem to have benefitted. If we can’t place our best young players with Championship teams then can we honestly say they are good enough for our first team?

Smallbone?? Not entirely sure what you’re expecting him to have done so far in his career to make you think there’s a good enough player in there.

Bale and Walcott both had a season in the Championship. Oxlade-Chamberlain had a season in Legue One.

It is only Shaw from your list who had no 1st team experience before playing in the Premier League.

He was in great shape. Worked his nuts off. I don't accept he was moved on for fitness reasons.

It is strange, as you say he was in very good shape so not down to fitness. I wonder if it’s a similar situation to Hoedt. He also came back in really good shape and gave Ralph a bit of back chat preseason, something about not being given a fair crack under him and was shipped out straight away.

That's more plausible than fitness. Didn't LeG (?) say something akin to that, basically that he has no future whilst Ralph is here?

De Graafschap was quite a random move.

Slattery moved to De Graafschap due to the connections of our scout Piet Buter with Mike Snoei. Snoei and Buter worked together at Telstar, thats when they loaned Seagar from us. After a successful year at Telstar, Snoei moved to De Graafschap and Buter also left Telstar ( he was their technical director).

Cool info.  Thanks.

I suppose after seeing 6 or so appearances I want to see a clear attribute or skill level from WS to lay a foundation for natural improvement, development, coaching, experience etc and I can't see that skill or attribute yet.

Interesting what to make of this considering what we’ve said about loans...

Does seem to be a tad at odds with our newly hailed philosophy. Even more strange, perhaps, as to why he was made B-Team captain. Surely if anyone in the B-Team was nailed on to be earmarked for progression to the first team, it would be the captain....?

Indeed.  On the positive side, it opens up a slot in the B team for Chauke to fill on a full-time basis.

How many loan signings can Gillingham actually make from us?

He was the most senior nailed on starter. He's decent captain material, even if he wasn't in the first team plans.

On the move, it'll do him good, if he plays. He needs a run of games and then a move to fulfil his potential.

It's a shame it hasn't worked out here. I don't know what went on with him and Ralph. It all seems a bit odd.

Shame it didn't work out, but ahead of him in the thoughts of the manager for a CM role now (based on who's been on the bench) are:

JWP

Romeu

Diallo

Smallbone

Jankewitz

Chauke

That's a lot of players when there are only two spots in the first team. I wish him luck at Gillingham and hope he secures a permanent deal somewhere in the summer. I guess a minimal fee and sell on clause are the best we can hope for now.

Weren't a few top clubs after him a while back? Thought he was one of our most promising players.

Shocking attitude. Hasn't got a future here, this is about him building a first team reputation and a future elsewhere.

Is that based on knowledge from someone ITK or just conjecture?

Someone ITK has posted it on here before, and someone I know (who knows people at the academy) has said the same, which is why Ralph had him shipped off to second division Dutch football to bring him down a peg (bit full of himself)

Well its not the first team and that's taken, and dose taking the captains armband really mean a nailed on place in the squad of the B team?.....it seems the lad hasn't progressed enough and this might be a kick start of what he may miss in the future,a very well paid job.

This sort of thing gets said about many young players. Young player used to success, bigged up all his short life, his sometimes cocky behaviour gets misinterpreted by some middled aged ordinary bloke who still harbours an erroneous idea that he could have made it if he had the luck and the attention these youngsters get.

The same was said about Harrison Reed, he's gone on to be a prem player.

I'm not sure where the truth lies here, but it certainly isn't ability holding him back.

Something was amiss when he was left out of the pre season tour in 2019. Someone apparently itk said it was because he returned fat. He didn't. He spent a lot of time in a boxing gym. His trainer, a proper experienced boxing man, said "He’s been an absolute pleasure to train, always gives 100% and has done everything asked of him. Straight 2 hour sessions...he will be going into pre-season training next week fitter than ever before. Good luck and take a bow Mr Slattery, you have done yourself proud".

That doesn't fit with the fat lad with a bad attitude the apparent itk's talk of.

Thus, why he was actually omitted was never clear. Since then he's not had a look in, just reserve team footy, that brief loan in Holland and now the Gillingham loan.

Sometimes it just doesn't work out with some players and some managers. Hopefully he'll get games at Gillingham and get a move.

Looks like we are having a clear out of the younger players we feel aren’t upto the level we need rather than holding on and loaning out.

Spot on.  A real shame as he made it all the way through the system to the 1st team and then fell by the wayside.

As I said, he never had a future here under RH.

His attitude stunk.
