Golac's Cunning Stunts Posted 24 January, 2019 Share Posted 24 January, 2019 Anybody remember this? I have a complete blank - can't remember it at all. From Wikipedia: It was organised by the Football League and was intended as a form of financial and sporting compensation for the English clubs which had qualified for European competition in the previous season but had been banned from entering European tournaments by UEFA following the Heysel Stadium disaster. Ironically, it was the Dippers who ultimately won it. The six clubs invited to participate, and the European competitions they would have qualified for, were: Everton (Football League champions, European Cup) Manchester United (FA Cup winners, Cup Winners' Cup) Norwich City (League Cup winners, UEFA Cup) Liverpool (UEFA Cup) Tottenham Hotspur (UEFA Cup) Southampton (UEFA Cup) Our results were: 17 September 1985 Liverpool 2–1 Southampton 2 October 1985 Tottenham Hotspur 2–1 Southampton 22 October 1985 Southampton 1–1 Liverpool 17 December 1985 Southampton 1–3 Tottenham Hotspur Anybody remember going to any of these games? Badger Posted 24 January, 2019 Share Posted 24 January, 2019 I remember it although think the matches were played in half empty stadiums, as there wasn't a great appetite for it. Not sure it ran for more than a single season, so was very shortlived lasting less time than the Watneys, or Texaco Cups.
Tamesaint Posted 25 January, 2019 Share Posted 25 January, 2019 I remember them well and went to them all bat the Liverpool away match. At the time we were one of the top teams in the country. The Heydsal stadium tragedy robbed us of another European jaunt and this competition was no substitute.
Wurzel Posted 25 January, 2019 Share Posted 25 January, 2019 IIRC the tv rights were sold to some obscure channel (this was pre-satellite/cable days), and was only available to watch in pubs. Got little publicity and quickly died a death.
Village Saint Posted 25 January, 2019 Share Posted 25 January, 2019 The Super Cup transformed into the Full Members Cup - for teams in the top two divisions of the football league. This ran for 6 more seasons and the last edition saw Forest beat Saints at Wembley in extra time. Then the Premier League arrived and the cup passed on unmourned. It was, however, a great day out at Wembley!
