Brilliant win given the circumstances before the game, let alone after Valery’s rush of blood to head. Didn’t prove costly in the end but has to be a learning experience for the lad.

Great effort from the lads. Romeu motm for me, was everywhere. Vestergaard best game for the club and Bednarak continues to make a mockery of being left out after his superb display v Arsenal. Long as with Romeu rolling back to his form from late Koeman/early Puel period.

With a couple of additions we should be OK. The levels of professionalism under Ralph are just night and day different and we haven’t seen that since Ronald and Poch.

Just getting up in NZ. Called a saints win in the pre match thread. Delighted none the less. Sounds like a solid performance. And good games from long and JWP, a long with romeu and bedbarek.

Sorry to disappoint you. It wasn't so much a solid performance, more like 10 men full to the brim with spunk. Spunk all over the place really. They were virtually swimming in spunk.

Imagine if Ralph had some of the quality from previous squads?

Bloke is a genius and the players love him.

Still got to keep an eye on teams around us but hopefully smash Everton next week and relegation flirting will be all but a memory

Hasenhüttl is a jammy barsteward, I'll give him that. As for young Valery, least said soonest mended. Crap team playing crap football yet we get a result. What was wrong with Redmond, didn't seem to be interested.

What to say to all the experts on here who have run the hate campaign against Romeu? How about ******** to the lot of you?

Fantastic backs to the wall performance.

Targett gets a lot of hate on here from our resident experts but he was absolutely magnificent today.

In terms of ratings mine would be:

McCarthy 7 - excellent saves when needed but his distribution is terrible

Valery 2 - hot headed, weak at the back and needs to learn quickly. Plenty of promise but not sure this is doing him any good

Stephens 7 - solid, great communicator but possibly at fault for the goal ball watching and leaving the man open

Bednarek 9 - how on earth did that moron Hughes sideline him completely? Immense

Vestegaard 9 - best game in a Saints shirt

Targett 8 - best game in a Saints shirt, blocked almost everything down his side

JWP 8 - everywhere and has developed a real bite to his game. Glad he is proving the haters wrong

Romeu 10 - unbelievable performance and was incredible. Again, how did that moron Hughes sideline him?

Armstrong 4 - awful. Weak in the tackle, completely anonymous and poor passing. Not sure what he really offers but he was terrible today

Redmond 7 - never stopped running even though he was never going to get any service when we went down to 10

Long 8 - ran himself into the ground and played a role in both goals (reckon 2nd was OG as it was going miles wide)

Subs

Cedric 7 - should, in hindsight, have started

Slattery 6 - helped shore up midfield

Gallagher - not on long enough but will no doubt start midweek

Ralph 100 - this guy is amazing. He has instilled belief and defensive discipline into a team sadly lacking either when he took over. Talk about sowing a silk purse out of a sows ear! Will be really interesting to see who he brings in in the summer. With Ralph here I think we will be comfortably mid-table and maybe, just maybe, top 10.

Agree with all that.

Inc Armstrong who has been lacking in several games contrary to opinion of several on here.

Ralph is immense with a full understanding of the game.

Interesting stat from the BBC report of our match: "In matches involving Leicester City in the Premier League this season, there has been nine red cards shown (four for, five against), the most of any club in the division."

They also report that Leicester had 72% possession and out-shot Saints 23 to 8.

Just back. What a defensive performance. Thought Bednarek, Vestergaard and Romeu were outstanding. Leicester very predictable and despite all the possession didn't cause many problems.

One thing you can notice from the stands with a whole view of the pitch is just how disciplined the team are. They move together, stay in lines and make runs to back each other up. It's a far cry to the tactical mess we had under Hughes.

Leicester were poor and very one dimensional. Was lovely to see that massive tool Vardy barely get a kick. I was impressed by Choudhury though, thought seemed very good for someone relatively inexperienced.

Tens of thousands Austrian fans back Ralph. He led Leipzig into Euro and Champions League, will do the same with the Saints.

Welcome to the board, he has certainly started well and I’ve been impressed with his attention to detail and energy. The return of our pressing game is much appreciated after the disenfranchising Puel, Pellegrino and Hughes spells. He needs help from the club hierarchy now in shifting some of the deadwood that he doesn’t see a future for.

A good read. I always enjoy your match reports.

Re Wes Tender report, agree, always look out for his report.

"I can only guess that what he has brought to the team to change us so drastically is discipline, much increased fitness, and a load of self belief, combined with intelligent tactical nous." It was clearly evident our increased fitness is already showing, not so long ago it wouldn't have sustained us through that.

Cheers, Alan

Think you’re wrong on Armstrong - he’s an intelligent footballer with great positional sense, keeps the ball moving (mainly forward) and has a good eye for an incisive pass. Not afraid to shoot either !

Charlie Nicholas on Sky sang his praises today and more importantly Ralph seems to rate him quite highly !

I reckon that you should look a bit deeper and analyse his performance before being blandly negative !!

And he has a good turn of pace too. So far he's been a very good bit of business. £ for £ probably our best bit of business of the summer.

Totally agree. He was great today.

Think he's close to making the 10 spot his, and rightly so. A very intelligent and effective footballer.

Armstrong was a good footballer with Celtic and he is the type of positive nippy midfielder that we have been crying out for. When we eventually finalise this season's team after the window I suspect he will be a key part.

Quick evaluation.

Great day out. Brilliant pubs in Leicester.

Fantastic team performance, showing the impact Hasenhüttl has had on the players.

I couldn't criticise a single player. They fought brilliantly in a way Saints teams haven't for the last two years.

That is all. Beer to enjoy.

Well your last line is entirely accurate thank you.

If you look at his whole game particularly when he is not in possession it could be better. He can and does hide at times.

Watch the action at 8:22 into the game. Nice triangle, and then Armstrong sets Redders free to run forwards into space. Redders is one of our quickest players, right? Then watch the run from Armstrong. He gives Redmond and their number 24 about a 10 yard head start and then shows unbelievable (sustained) pace to catch up with Redmond and get past their number 24. I think we haven't yet seen the best of Armstrong. My take on it is that he has the technique we need, and the raw pace that we need, but not yet the fitness. No surprise, coming from a league in which the standard was so much lower. He might get better as the season goes on, or he might need a full pre-season to reach the level that Ralph wants/needs, but I think we have a good player on our hands.

Had to rush into Central London after the game so couldn't post my immediate thoughts, but I'm here now so panic not.

What a brilliant result! When the red card came out I thought uh oh, then when they scored I thought wow we'll be lucky to get a point, but this team, under this manager, continue to surprise me in a positive way.

Leicester were too predictable but they need to stick with their excellent manager and get rid of the stale players! Vardy is past it, Morgan a carthouse, others were poor. The squad needs refreshing, ship out the deadwood, keep the manager and they'll challenge the top 6 no issues whatsoever next season. They'll get 7th or 8th no problems.

We will stay up, I PRAY and HOPE that we try and go for the FA Cup. PLEASE let's go for it.

Don't get too down when you win, and don't get too up when you win.

Let's take it a game at a time eh?

lol @ Claude's clown like interview on MOTD

If I was Leicester, that would right royally **** me off. Basically saying that the fans, and how they feel, are an irrelevance. To me, he actually looked like a man just waiting to collect his P45 and thus was fairly half arsed about the whole thing.

Vardy is past it? He’s literally their only threat. When he doesn’t play they are worse than they were today

He’d walk into our and pretty much any team outside the top 6 every day of the week

Looked like a ‘cash in and move on type interview “. Only thing missing was “Please sack me ASAP”

Good day out.

As others have said:

Romeu - majestic

Vestergaard - now looking like a £20 million centre back

Bednarek - has that crucial ability to anticipate danger and make goal saving interventions... tackle on Aubameyang v Arsenal and the brilliant clearance today right in line with us

Other than that most of the game was at the far end of the pitch, us in the first half and them in the second. But who cares - biggest win of the season so far IMO with Bertie, Yoshi, PEH, Lemina, Ings, Austin and Obafemi all missing.

Played lads.

Great performance from the whole team. These backs-to-the-wall away victories are the most satisfying.

Ralph really is an inspirational manager who gets the absolute best out of our players. Players I didn't think had it in them to play that well, like Long, Targett, Vestergaard and Ward-Prowse, do for Ralph. It's amazing how much the departure of one man and the arrival of another has transformed our team. Bring on Derby, Everton and the rest of the season.

Saints winning away and Pompey losing at home is how things should be. Long may they continue like this.

Enjoying a couple of pints and reflecting on a great game. First half we were superb. So nice to see us play with some real conviction. The boys looked like they’ve totally bought into the system and looking out for each other. You could see from some of the body language and gestures that even when someone made a mistake they were kinda helping each other understand what went wrong where they meant to pass or reinforcing where they were supposed to be.

Although stressful at the time the most pleasing is how well the team adapted to being down to 10. They probably haven’t practiced for that and the players all dug in and supported each other. Romeu was superb and led by example. I wonder if he should stay as captain when Hoj returns.

There is real belief now. There is a system rather than a band aid. So refreshing. Only downer is we will have to say goodbye to Ralph in a year or two. Hopefully we get another Ralph and not the Puel/MoPe/Hughes farce again.

Gotta go, the fridge is calling...
