The January Transfer Window 2019!

What other club would take him? I think the club is trying to find buyers for players but can't find any takers for the worst ones and they are on such inflated wages here that we can't even find clubs prepared to take them on loan.

Loving the compulsion to judge a player after playing for 6 months in the most physical and difficult league in the world (half of that time being in and out of a team playing badly under Hughes).

It seems that if a player isn’t an instant success he is immediately written off as not good enough or atrocious in some strange cases.

Moi has not been very good by any stretch, but I will continue to do the sensible thing and not pass judgment on him until he’s had a fair crack.

Don't knock him - he did well in the Under 23 match against Middlesbrough two weeks ago and now that Parkes has been sold, presumably Cull moves up the pecking order. I actually had a good chat to his mum after that match. He has come up through the academy alongside a lot of other players who are starting to get noticed now, so who knows what his development might look like in the next few years. Personally I will be chuffed if he doesn't ever get culled but instead goes on to become a great future keeper for us! :)
Wasn't his brother Ben with us too, but had to retire after cancer treatment?

You really don’t get it do you..we are offloading cos Hassenhütl wants a smaller squad to concentrate on and execute his playing style. None of the released players suit his style end of so keeping them will do more harm than good.

Depends. Yes, if the club brings in a quality striker and RB; most of us will be happy with that.

If no replacements are brought in, it's a stupid gamble to save peanuts.

These super lean squads are a good idea.

Didn't do Hull any harm.... Remember the 16-17 squad pic

Hi guys! Long time lurker, first time poster!

I must say I like Hasenhuttl's comments about keeping a small squad of 18-20 players and then the rest youth players. There is currently a list of about 10 players at the club I wouldn't be too fussed if they left, we have: Barnes, Elyounoussi, Flannigan, Forster, Gallagher, Austin, Hesketh, McQueen, Rose and Seager. I think if we can remove these players to trim the fat so to speak, we can bring in that Maehle right back, and also try and bring in a creative midfielder, or potentially a striker. I wouldn't have minded keeping Austin however he appears on his way out. Leaves us with a good solid squad of 18, with a whole bunch of exciting youth players coming through the ranks. Very good times to be a Saints fan!

So are we actually signing anyone? Or are we just going to systematically weaken our current team and hope kids and inexperience can secure our premiership status....
Seems like that's probably the plan. But it's ok because Ralph is the Messiah, so a good squad is not important any more.... Hopefully.

How are we weakening the team. We haven’t sold anyone of the first xi.

Cedric has Only played as fill in 3rd choice left back under Ralph.

Even if we shift Austin & bring no one in we have 20/21 players & u21 on top of that.

This ^^^^^^^^

We have some real numptys on here. We have been on a good run, without these players, so how the hell are we weakening the team, a team that has Yoshida, Lemina and Bertrand to return.

Are you happy with Valery and Ramsey as our only specialist right backs? Really? If we replace Cedric with a reasonably experienced right back, I would be happy we've not been majorly weakened by this window.

Happy with Valery as first choice which he’s been since Ralph took over. I’d prefer we bring in another right back target this window but if we have to wait to the summer to get the right person that’s ok.

We seem to be gambling on getting very few injuries, which is odd given we've had a lot of injuries even in Ralph's short time here.

We might not have weakened the 1st team 11 but we have weakened the squad and consequently our bench.

If Austin goes too then that's 5 experienced backups gone when realistically we are still heavily fighting relegation.

So daft in fact that we simply must be signing 2-3.

Utter bants this place. Selling 4 players that have either been frozen out or been on the bench is now weakening our starting eleven. Cedric was only used as a last measure and Austin wasn’t even on the bench last few games. If Ralph doesn’t want these players, then I’d rather trust his experience in battling relegation with small squads and a mix of good players and youth. [emoji23]

This place will be a mess after palace beat us and Zaha has a field day.

Rangers transfer news: Southampton target Tavernier but Gerrard wants £8m to trigger talks

Saw that quoted on the bbc gossip column. Only seen him on tv once v Celtic where he did play very well. On the other hand, his pre rangers career doesn't shout out top quality, Scottish football is weak, and I think his contract is up this summer so 8 million does seem a lot!

Actually, transfer market says contracted until 2022. In which case might be an option. Was the stand out player in that particular old firm game, but one match on tv is almost as reliable as YouTube clips for assessing players.

Which rather points out how weak we are in both sides of the fullback/wing back positions doesn't it? given our favoured formation of 3-4-3 the wingbacks are pretty vital and we have two left backs that are injured more often than not a young right back who is still learning and an even younger rightback who isn't ready as back up. No one has any problem with shifting out the chaff in the squad but surely the whole point of freeing up money by shifting players out was to give us funds to strengthen the squads weak areas to avoid relegation?

The squad was too big, it needed a mass cull and I am absolutely delighted that it is finally happening. Gabbiadini aside, who I think could have done well under Ralph, not one of the players who has departed or is rumoured to be leaving will be missed.

Yeah but, no but...

I agree totally but the reaction from some on here is laugable... and not just from the trolls

Bertrand history hardly points to someone injured more often or not.

Shifting players out is to give Ralph the sized squad he wants and help summer restructure.

This. Its ok though cos we wont get anymore injuries and wont need back up players, let alone experienced pros if things go tits up results wise in the next couple of months.

Generally agree, albeit still holding a candle for Hesketh who has looked class when fit.

It's really funny to see which of the youth/ ex youth players people favour. Hardly any have played meaningful minutes, but it seems that for every fan of sims there's a fan of hesketh, for every fan of Gallagher there's a fan of reed. As it happens I'm with you, have a soft spot for hesketh for no sensible reason whatsoever, whereas I'm not too fussed about sims. Can't explain why, absolutely no idea ...

If we don't replace Cedric with an experienced right back, our only 2 specialist right backs will have just 10 senior League games between them. Is it really "laughable" to question whether that's a good idea in a relegation battle?

There are rumours that the club are trying to sign a more experienced RB though, so maybe they agree with those of us who think that would be quite sensible after all?

Interesting article:

Talks of David Lee, presumably a youth team coach. Possibly the same David Lee who put in such dazzling wing displays for us after being signed by Branfoot.

He's also just said Jean-Kevin Augustin from Leipzig is on the market for the last few days of the window. Asking price was originally 40m but that has been lowered..

Now him I wouldn’t mind; Ralph knows him well which might be a pull. Would give us the pace and directness we need.

Don't panic! We needed to reduce the squad and the wage bill before we build up. And the build up doesn't need to be until the summer. Even with no purchase we will be fitter and stronger and more together than when the window opened and every academy type will be filled with new incentive and hope. We were drifting as a club now we have direction and purpose
