The January Transfer Window 2019!

Relax Ron. Not writing the boy off, just doing some light research.

Have never seen him play, so only have the opinion of others just now.

Never having seen him play is never normally a reason for you to diss a player is it. Normally just having them put on a Saints shirt makes you slag them off.

Mepham is a good, young CB and has good experience in a competitive league for a 21yo. Both Bournemouth and Leicester tried to get him in the summer.

Perhaps a sign of the change of direction in transfer policy?

I always like signing good championship players. There are some gems down there.

I have absolutely no issue with signing promising young players, but with Stephens, bednarek, vesti, hoedt (?) p, Jones, Ramsay, o'connor plus a couple of other youth prospects, do we really need another young centre back? Especially if we're going to revert to a back 4 as per Ralph's preferred formation?

Not saying we're not, but I'd much rather focus on out wide and up front (and possibly right back if Cedric wants out). And if we do want to improve the defence I think we need experience, both for the here and now, and also to help develop our current crop of youngsters who show varying degrees of promise.

Doesn't really gel with Ralph's long-term talk, but Gabbi & Davis leaving have free'd up enough wages for a Cahill loan (if we wanted to go down that path).

Quick flick through the Brentford forum. Seems he's highly rated but prone to big errors..

The sides form has improved since he's recently been left out it seems

Im thinking if you're not a first choice CB for Brentford, can you realistically step up to the prem?

Richard Dryden did

Decent player with plenty of assists to his name. In all honesty any other club in the prem or championship is a step up from little old Boscombe

You say that, but they have a manager and 5-6 players wanted by bigger clubs but they have so far held onto the talent.

Or is it just us that tends to bend over as soon as the door bell rings?

This trolling 8 days a week sure does take some dedication.

As you well know, our wantaways go to champions league sides. They have possibly one player rumoured to be of interest to one team, and given they've signed his replacement ...

Seriously do will really need anyone other than a striker?

RH can coach average players which we already have and plenty of them too.

Wait till the summer and get rid of those he wants out and replace with who he likes in.

This. Someone with pace if at all possible, though such players are of course at a premium.

Pony.

King, Brooks, Wilson and Ake have all been heavily linked with top 6 sides. And if fit will all likely start for AFCB today

have they? wilson the only real one thats been linked with chelsea.

brooks is a young 20 year old something that the top 6 probs have an eye on but nothing concrete yet.

also the bournemouth love in has died recently... the players we sold us propelled us to 6th/7th/8th, and we were comfortably in the top 8 bracket in in the 2013-14 to 2015-16 season...

i'll say what we have done though is sold too many in one sitting at a time, other clubs have spaced it out like but thats because we had some genuine success between the years mentioned above.

Ake just linked with Chelsea this morning, as it happens. (£40m buy-back).

A few mentions on sky to boost the viewing in a slow window and a bit of newspaper chit chat, nothing more

I can't be bothered to click on every one of those links, but have they actually received any bids for any of those players?

Regarding Chris Mepham -

Watched the 1st half of Brentford vs Middlebrough on sky in November (0-0 at h-t but lost 2-1) and they mentioned that he was highly rated, so I kept a keen eye on him (albeit while my 1 yr old son was running around frantically)

Can't really comment too much defensively, as Boro were still managed by Pulis, so were naturally unadventurous in attack, but he seemed to be handling the long ball ok.

Going forward though he looked VERY comfortable, was surging forward with the ball well into the Boro half on a handful of occasions (was like watching a VVD playing for Celtic YouTube compilation).

If he was to sign, here's hoping he can defend!

I was reading through the Brentford forum on him, a lot of posters saying he was the best to come through the youth squad in their lifetime.. a lot of posters also thought he was a cert for going to a top 6 side. even a booby Moore comparison.. he's also meant to have pace. so sounds pretty interesting

Did you notice Boro's Dael Fry? I first saw him play when he was the outstanding player in a game against our U23s. He would be ideal for us. He's the best young central defender in the Championship. Also, in all this talk of young central defenders, let's not forget we already have a very good prospect in Christoph Klarer.

The list of honours Fry has already won is impressive, including an U20 World Cup winner's medal:

International

England U-17

UEFA European Under-17 Championship champions: 2014

England U20

Tournoi Under-20 Four Nations champions: 2017

FIFA Under-20 World Cup champions: 2017

England U21

Toulon Tournament champions: 2018

Individual

LFE Football Excellence XI: 2014-15

MDSA Middlesbrough Young Player of the Year: 2015–16

MOSC Middlesbrough Young Player of the Year: 2015–16

Ramsdens February Player of the Month: 2015–16

MDSA Middlesbrough Young Player of the Year: 2016-17

MOTD September Young Lion of the Month: 2017-18

Toulon Tournament Best XI: 2018

Mepham, or Fry, are good signings for the future, but we need someone capable of improving things now. Perhaps they would, but I expect Ralph is looking to add experience to the team at this point. The name from Leipzig mentioned (Orban) is their current captain, so if we are in for him then it looks like we're seeking someone to organise things at the back and on the pitch. A quality lacking.

Can't see Lepizig releasing their captain mid-season though.

Still find the centre-back thing odd to be honest, yes ideally we need strengthening there long term, but right now I think Vestergaard, Bednerak, Stephens and Yoshida are good enough, with Jones there for injuries (presuming we ship Hoedt).

I'd be more worried that are only real pacey attacking mid is basically Redmond, beyond him we have Armstrong, Moe who has done nothing and then we are either playing JWP there or one of the youngsters.

Summer yes, we need CB, DM, AM, Striker, but priority right now would IMO be the AM, who can play Ralfs system and probably put Armstrong out of the side.

Would be more concerned with striker at the moment.. we only really have ings as a decent option now and he has fitness worries..long is long and Austin needs it on a plate..

Me personally I don't want Armstrong out of the side.. really good player imo and it's nice to have someone with a bit of intelligence in the attack, as even though redmond is vying for our player of the year his decision making can still suck

Name rings a bell. Think Bournemouth have been after him.

Brentford have some good players. I like Ollie Watkins too.

Oh nice!! Didn't expect that one. That reporter, Lyall Thomas works for Sky as well & is usually really clued up on Spurs especially.

Brentford hold out for big bucks usually, so unlikely we'd be able to go for both at the moment.

I've always liked the idea of signing up young talent from the championship (they seem harder to find now as a lot of the best players down there are now owned by Prem sides).

Scored a belting goal at Stoke earlier this season if I remember rightly

would not fit Ralph's stylee.

you can tell what he wants is just speed everywhere in the front 4 attacking spots- he had that at Leipzig with Werner, Poulsen, Bruma, and a really good playmaker in Forsberg. and rightly so!

all the best attacking players in the world have some sort of speed and pace except the odd one/two target men like Kane and Cavani- and don't get me wrong they aren't that slow either.

if we were going to only buy 1 player, then id rather we went and bought another redmond type winger but can play up front too if needed.

Don't we still have Boufal?
