Batting at the Aegeas looks a bit tough this morning, 3 down already and scoring mainly in singles. Probably why they put us in after winning the toss.

Well that escalated quickly

Extraordinary innings by Vince, and we added 114 in the last ten overs.

And a comfortable win, even with DL. Four wins from four as defending champions.

Great knock from Vince and very good all round display from Dawson. Crane got overs in and 3 wickets. Anyone know why Fuller as a front line bowler not being used much? Perhaps as someone who hits the deck we will see more of him when the pitches firm up.

See Notts piled up over 400 v Leics.

Wonder what Alex Hales suspended for this time!

In other news Ian Holland on loan to Northants for their one day cup campaign.

Sad news about Shaun Udal, sure he will show the same determination he had as a player. Great message from Michael Clarke on social media.

Bit close in the end but some cracking bowling to finish them off. Lead at the top extended.

Brilliant win, Markram has been a great signing and Alsop on song. Northeast and Vince also batting beautifully but sadly we will lose two of that quad for the WC. Always nice to beat Sussex and pull it back after Wiese’s wonder knock.

Gripping stuff. Watched most of the Sussex innings and I'd have to admit that I thought that we're maybe a heavy duty bowler short just now. Fuller certainly gives you the jitters when the opposition are hitting out.

Amazing, April has come and gone and I don't think Hants have lost a single whole day to rain. Just a few overs for bad light on the first few days of the season and a bit of a rain delay once or twice.

Posted (edited)

Not looking like a great start for Hants today. Lancs 126/2 after 21 or so. 2 batsmen moving on to big'ish scores.

Donald and Alsop will be opening for us later....hmmmm

Well Crane bowled Jennings but we're still getting tonked. Might not end well. Markram looking like a big miss already.

And as I write, Crane gets the big tonker Vilas.

So Hants are a bit bogged down chasing a pretty reasonable total. Must be tricky batting today. Vince and Rossouw had us back on the required rate after 26 overs or so but since then Vince has been run out and we're not scoring very quickly again. Predictably Alsop and Donald contributed very little to the total and Northeast made 0 (or 1) can't remember exactly.

25 required off the last 7 overs.

Now 22 off 6.

Where's Rahane? I thought he was supposed to start today.

Without Vince or overseas player the batting looks pretty weak.

The batting is certainly slow today. Pinned down completely since lunch, lost Northeast and Rossouw as well.

Weatherley, Soames and Donald top of the order. Awful batting lineup for a relegation 48 pointer.

Donald hasn't come in to bat yet. Dawson in before him. Live stream on the Warks site for anyone interested.

Oh shut up we have a good team this season when Rahane and Vince are available

Weatherley, Soames and Donald are young and no doubt will develop I am not sure they have had much batting recently

We'll see how Donald gets on, played a decent one day innings somewhere in the pool matches.

Wicket looks much more difficult than Hants must have estimated when they chose to bat. The odd ball seems to flatten out. Mind you some of the Warks bowlers seem to be bowling just wide enough not to get called for it.

Well I hope I'm not going to put the mockers on him here because Hants don't need that right now but Donald has come in and played his shots just when we needed to start boosting the score. Looks pretty handy so far.

Yes the ball was moving around a lot just after tea

Donald has 50 now

300 at stumps would be OK 230-5 16 overs left but of course the new ball will attract some wickets

Good effort that, conditions had a bit of everyone. Great knock by Alsop, proper batting to be there all day. Donald played very nicely, good tactics to use him in the middle-lower order where he could attack. OHD bowled well, and like the look of Brooks, very lively for them, can see him playing ODI for England next 18 months and Test prospect as well. Good effort by Patel on a first day pitch.

Need to be scoring at least 350 and as close to 400 as possible, day two might be best for batting. Good attack though with Kyle, Fidel and Barker knows this ground and conditions inside out.

Donald scored 75 in a 84 run partnership!

Runs look pretty hard to come by on this wicket. Pity Donald got hit by that full toss, seemed to be in some distress afterwards, hit a couple of big shots off the same bowler but chipped on to point (I think) afterwards.

Today Hants are making really heavy weather of it, didn't get the 4th batting point, Alsop out for 150. Hants all out for 354 after batting for another 22 overs or so this morning. Hope Warks have the same difficulty scoring.

Certainly looks that way so far. Keith Barker has bowled 8 overs for 3 runs

Warks 88/3 at tea after the 1st ball of the 40th over from Fidel. What a great inswinging yorker that was.

Looks like it's been a good day. Sounded hard going through the afternoon session, but rewarded with a load of wickets towards the end of the day. In the unlikely event of us bowling them out for 204 or less, I wouldn't imagine we'd enforce the follow-on considering how tough it seems to be to take wickets.

Quite the stat that if Dom Sibley adds the 5 runs tomorrow that'll take him to a century, it'll be his sixth first-class game in a row where he's scored a century.

Shows you strong Surrey are that they felt able to let him join Warks on loan then permanently. Would have loved him at the top of the order for us. Still, good start to this game and to the season, Lords final by late May and only bad display was Yorks in four day with Root in tow.

To be fair, he never really showed this sort of form at any stage for Surrey. His departure was self-inflicted, he basically went to Alex Stewart and demanded to be an opening batsman in all formats, at a time when they had Aaron Finch and Jason Roy opening in T20 and 50-over cricket, and Kumar Sangakkara in the 4-day side, so he wasn't even a guaranteed pick in any of them, let alone an option for opening! As a result, they decided it was best if he went elsewhere - Warwickshire needed younger players as they were a proper Dad's Army a year or two ago, so it's obviously worked out well for all parties.

64-6. Should be OK if the weather holds off. Elsewhere another ton for Gary Ballance (3 in 3 first class games this season). Got to be worth another look in the Test team.

Looking at the table we’ve scored the most batting points out of anyone in the top tier! Shows we are moving in the right direction with the bat to go with our very good bowling line up

I'm still looking at the bottom of the table to make sure we're reasonably clear. I don't know if it's supporting Southampton or the endless Hampshire relegation sagas but this is my natural instinct.

Solid start for Hants on the I.O.W today. About the only team batting first that hasn't lost 3 or 4 wickets already for few runs.

Then again I don't think Notts are very good and they've gifted us a fair few with no-balls.

Dawson and Vince in the England group for the W.C. Might leave us a bit short for the domestic games during that period.

Yep. Sad thing is I doubt that they'll play unless there are injuries.

Looks a close game, Notts 55/2 in reply. Dawson has been replaced by Mason Crane from today.

Confirmed that both Vince and Dawson are unavailable for the RL Cup final on Saturday, so I would guess that makes us significant underdogs now.

The WC doesn't start until a week later. Just warm up matches that day. You'd thought they'd release back up players for a Lord's final.

So a first innings lead of 71 for Hants. Pity they put on so many for their 9th wicket, most of them off Crane. Doubt it's his kind of wicket at all. Perhaps on the 4th day. Trouble is Soames and Weatherly don't score very quickly on most occasions. We'll need 250 + by tea tomorrow if we're to have a chance of the win.

Edit: Well, we could have done without the loss of Weatherly before the close. Rahane will need to show his mettle tomorrow morning.

Well on schedule at the moment 128-2 lead approaching 200

Is Rahane eligible for the final?

Would assume so, yes.

Both past 100 now, either they've both played exceptionally or the wicket has flattened out somewhat. Not sure what sort of target we need to be setting here. Already 300 ahead, so perhaps another 100-150 and have a good hour or so at them tonight?
