Huddersfield 1 Saints 3

Why on earth slag off Targett? He was excellent today: a lot of these players have not had game time in some time thanks to that p***k of a dinosaur Hughes and will only improve with more game time.

We are still not a good team but Ralph will have us comfortable mid-table of that I have no doubts. What a change to actually look forward to matches and be entertained. By lord, well overdue for the long suffering fans.

Loving the passion from Ralph and how we managed to get him as manager is way beyond me. He is too good for Saints

Targett only really made one mistake. He had a chance to shoot but dallied and muffed the pass. Apart from that he was very good. The wing backs get real far forward at times so need to be able to shoot. At one point Valery was furthest man forward (when he got hurt, just before Romeu’s shot). Ideal for Bertrand because he has a good shot but he has to win that place back when fit.

Romeu also excellent. Covered so much ground and held it all together.

He was outstanding - excellent situational reading, no rash tackles and his passing was solid.

The spirit has changed totally - no more glowering and gesticulating at team mates, but plenty of encouragement - even from the bench. Ralph's personalty is already coming out in the players.

Bertrand in for Targett would take this team up a notch.

Without wishing to put a dampener on things, I'm already starting to mourn the day we'll ultimately lose him to a bigger club. If he keeps this up, we'll be fortunate to hold onto him for more than 18 months. Anyway, rewinding back to the present, I'm sure going to make the most of the time he's here. Happy days are here again (for the time being) :)

4 things happened in that game that made me feel a connection to saints again.

Whole bench celebrating goals, even subs.

Obe scoring hist first of many goals for us.

Hojbjerg flat out of his back and THREE saints players go over to pick him up.

RH celebrating with the away fans at the end with THE biggest smile, applauding them, bowing down and then thumping the badge (i know i know). He then lifted Obe up to the fans like a trophy haha.

He really looks like he's enjoying himself. It's so good to see. What a win as well. The lads are learning and growing in confidence.

Nice post. Ta

Must admit I shat the bed when Cardiff beat us.

Surely no one else thought we'd then win the next two matches? Optimistic for a top half finish now :)

I did actually and went further that predicted will be three as will beat West Ham

Manager ethos to win the ball high up and it creates chances

I now play as a narrow No.10 and I am enjoying it

Every player is committed to the new manager

It has been a long two weeks as there have been long meetings, training and lots of detail

Lots of hard work going in

We never spoke about back-to-back wins, the manager just focused us on how this will be a tough game

we watched their game against Bournemouth over and over

We knew we have to match their work rate

so happy for Michael, he missed one just before and so happy he got the goal

he works hard and everyone is so proud of him

This manager will get the best out of him

The last couple of games the fans have been more behind us

it was obvious in the last game

we now feel they are totally with us

looking forward to west ham game, we will have a recovery session tomorrow and review this game just gone

we cannot wait to play west ham at home

Great result, well needed and continues the good work from last week. To get back to back wins without probably our 3 best players starting is impressive. OR excellent again, Redmond & Armstrong lively and great for the nipper to open his account.

Only 1 moan from me, yet again a centre half doesn’t put his body on the line and block the shot, jumping around like a big fairy. Poor from the keeper as well. They really shouldn’t have scored today and it made for an uncomfortable spell in a game we controlled.

Very tough game today, no team is easy in this league

we worked for every minute of the game

first half was very good and a 3-1 win is not easy

I told redmond that he is a fantastic player and told him he will score and assist more

I am very happy for him as he works very hard with and without the ball

Ings worked very hard in defence too and I demand this

I have a lot of hope with what we have

we now have 3 point gap to 18th which is important

this win was the result of hard work and they made it very tough

we won a lot of headers and our defenders did well

our decisions on the ball is getting better

we handled pressure well today and this was an important step for us today

we deserved this win

I have not thought anything about xmas and have so much work to do

xmas games in England is very special for the fans and cant wait to be part of it

very happy for the fans and for those who came today, they will have a good journey home like the players

Shush, we don't want anybody else in our secret. If we beat WHU and ManC you can bet he will not be renewing his contract here in 2021.

Thought McCarthy has a hard time saving that shot, will be disappointed but it did serve all over the show and he was unsighted. His save before this was top drawer thou. Rather have him than the Giant wind sock.

Yeah I think unsighted was the bigger problem. I’m not sure he even realised Billing had shot, because he was still trying to look round Bednarek after the ball had left his boot.

After the Arsenal win, the pundits on MOTD watched Hasenhuttl and proclaimed "this guy's going to be fun." And they're right.

He is a big personality and very quickly seems to have won over the players and turned their demeanours around from losers into winners. He is totally focused, kicks and heads every ball from the sidelines, celebrates like any fan when we score, and shows real warmth and appreciation towards the players and fans for their effort and support. His commitment is total and he expects the same from the players. He is loyal to those who give their everything and is unfazed about blooding the youngsters into the team if he believes that they are ready. This will intensify competition to get into the team and encourage the youngsters to step up, knowing that their chance will come under him

A typical Saints team recently would have given the top clubs a game and folded against the basement teams. Under him, we have beaten both. Personally I think that we played better against Arsenal. Much of the passing today was sloppy and we gave the ball away too easily, too often. I have been surprised to see in both matches that despite us being the better team during the match in terms of our style of play, we seem to be having only one third of the possession, yet scored 3 goals both times. We used to have two thirds of the possession and couldn't score.

Tactically, Ralph seems to get it spot on so far. The substitutions are aimed towards attacking, not letting up to defend a lead, but to increase it. His high pressing game requires super fitness and stamina, which didn't seem to be a top priority under the past two managers at least, and until players are capable of maintaining the pace for the full 90 minutes, fresh legs are introduced to maintain the shape and impetus. With continuing success, no doubt other managers will suss out how we play and the lower down teams will once again park the bus as they used to do when we had Koeman and Pochettino. However, the top teams will feel that they won't need to, so it would be great to once again cause some upsets by beating them too further down the line.

There are players like Bertrand and Cedric to come back from injury and others who have for one reason or another been excluded from the starting line-up or even the bench. They will have to fight for a place in the team, or have the FA Cup as a opportunity to showcase themselves. Otherwise they could be on their way out of the door in the January transfer window. Although I have faith in Ralph's ability to improve players in areas where they lack ability, no doubt he has already identified where we are deficient in the squad and will wish to bring in his own players. I hope that Mr Gao can open his cheque book to accommodate a signing or two to round off the squad.

Early days, but already in a short time I have gone from the feelings of disillusionment, boredom and despair under Hughes and Pellegrino, to optimism, passion and expectation towards our team once more.

Just got back, another great away day, early Christmas present. Generally we played well and fully deserved the win, Rom and PEH ran the midfield and Danny and Nathan caused them all sorts of problems up front. At the back we were ok, but we're still prone to mistakes and misplaced passes and headers. Vest and Maya won most of the high balls, although Vest sometimes tries to get ahead of his man which can leave him out of position sometimes.

Thought both Target and Valery did ok, although Valery picked up a stupid booking for time wasting at a throw in, which puts unnecessary pressure on him and the manager. That said, managers subs were spot on today, each sub strengthened the team.

All in all though, a decent away performance, but I have to say Huddersfield were woeful. Everything was just, hoof it, kick it or throw it long, there was no gameplan or tactics, just kick and rush.

Fans were excellent today, great scenes at the end with the players, especially PEH, Oberfemi and Ralph.

I know what you mean, but we’ve got 2 choices.

Find a brilliant young manager I.e poch/ Ralph and have a couple of seasons of excitement followed by a hope we find another, OR get on the merry go round of big Sam/ Hughes/ Pulis/ etc and become more and more disenfranchised

Excellent post.

Aside from the improvement in results, and it is early days, there seems to be much more grit about the team. The last 2 games demonstrated this when the opposition scored against us. Under Hughes we would have lost the Arsenal game and drawn against Hudds more than likely. This is bourne out of a surge of confidence amongst the players, and a belief in each other and the system they are required to play. The transformation is remarkable thus far. If/when we do concede the team knows we have the ability to score ourselves. Under Hughes we panicked when under pressure (re Brighton), Under Ralph we continue to play our football. It can only get better...

Agree with this, Pellegrino and Hughes just seemed to panic after conceding or scoring. Ralph’s attitude has been a breath of fresh air so far and this is most activated the players have been since May 2016. The injection of young players eg Valery, Obafemi and Johnson has also added to the sense of zest. Well done to the young man on his first PL goal today, hopefully more to come.

Redmond has been better this term overall but have a feeling he and PEH will be key players for Ralph and really kick on. Still the first choice FBs and fully fit Lemina to come and Bertrand seems very positive about Ralph. W Ham tough but winnable.

Ralph now has a chance to move a few players that won’t fit his style or outlook eg Gabbi, JWP, Hoedt, Forster amongst others and they need to move for their own sakes. May see Elynoussi move on as well.

God it's refreshing what a tactically aware manager can bring to a side. Obviously there are still flaws and issues which need to be resolved by 'wheeling and dealing', but he's connecting this side back with the fans. A side which has been so disconnected from the fan base, he's joining it all back up again. I didn’t see that happening.

He's a manager in the mould of Klopp/Pep/Poch, no doubts about it. It's the way he gives players confidence, makes them believe in themselves and seemingly gives them an extra 10% on the pitch.

We've got something here, I can feel it.

Enjoyed that! Great to revive the “swing your hats if you love the Saints” from Palace away under Koeman, brilliant scenes, and the Ralph festive song was great touch! He certainly enjoyed celebrating with the fans and I noted was keen to point to Obafemi in order to deflect the praise.

On another day we could have scored five or six easily and always looked a real threat on the counter attach with pace. Back 3 looking like a proper defence now, I notice they are much tighter together positionally as an impenetrable three man team. Both Hoj and Romeo excellent, the latter much better than he was last week and fully justified his place instead of Lemina. But the standout player once again was Redmond, if he continues this form I believe he will get an England recall later in the season. Has been playing like Sterling without the end product, but certainly sorted that out today with goal and assist.

Finally Ings is running at more than one goal per two games this season, very few have a better ratio than that in the PL.

Early days of course but Ralph Hasenhüttl showing the problems at Southampton since 2016 may not be player quality & recruitment instead that of poor tactics and man management from Pellegrino & Hughes.

A clear football style & organisation has got this squad winning!

I don't think he's shown that at all. Our great form doesn't make carillo, hoedt, that crap winger I can never remember any less expensive failures.

He did play well, very well, but i don't think he is on England's level, no one at Saints is. you really think Redmond is better than Lingard, Rashford, Sterling, Sancho and co, sorry but no way. i would have any of them at saints in a heart beat.
