37 so far this season.?!?!?

Has the game really changed that much or is selective memory a condition of old age? I'm sure the likes of Terry Hurlock and Jimmy Case had made that many by half time in most games.🤣

3.7 per game. Doesn't seem much but I suppose the game has moved on from that being the only way to win the ball. Pressuring teams into making mistakes/giving the ball back is more effective/less risk.

Impressive Romeu 😂

96 chances created - how many here? I knew we have been shit at converting the chances over the years but...

Oriol has 195 Prem appearances, 53 yellow cards and zero reds.

That's the second highest amount of yellows without a red in Premier League history after Luke Young with 62.

I think that record shows that Romeu can be an incredibly well disciplined defensive midfielder but until he's on that yellow he's willing to take more risks.

Anyone else surprised that the players aren't on a diet / exercise regime dictated by the club rather than having to work out for themselves what's best...? Or am I reading too much into this?

I know a player from another club.  He says he gets fed healthy stuff whilst in the club, training.  After that they are given nutritional advice, told what to avoid, told what not to have before a game etc but other than that they're pretty much left to it.  I would imagine in the Prem they would have access to the clubs nutritionist should they want it.

edit...actually that's not entirely true.  He's also told not to put on any weight and, in his case, not too much muscle mass as they want to keep him lean and fast.  So yeah, I'd have thought the club would have been advising Romeu on the sort of shape he would benefit from being in.

A defensive midfielder is also seen as a vital position - it is understood that Southampton Oriol Romeu is admired by Villa's recruitment team and coaching staff but the south-coast club will be very reluctant sellers so, at this stage, any deal appears remote.

What's happened to him?

During our spell of good form a few months ago he was putting in MOTM performances week after week. But recently he has gone massively off the boil and when he doesn't perform we surrender all control of midfield, and we can't drop him because we literally have nobody else in the squad who can play his role.

As I said in another thread……he’s 30 years old, he has started 30 league games this season, and he often plays in a two man midfield. It’s not sustainable. And like you say we have no real options behind him.

I thought Diallo was going to cover or replace him but he seems to have disappeared. Sorry to say Romeo's time is coming to an end, when he is off, the whole team [s off.

He's a good player Romeu, but he's never been too far above 'average' I'd say. For a club looking to push higher I'd still say we'd need better than Romeu as a starter every week if i'm brutally honest.

When he is injured or out of form we struggle because we have no one else who can do his role. That needs to be priority number 1, along with number 10's and CB's in the summer. It's going to be a busy window I hope as we have major issues all over.

Both Rom and JWP look a bit jaded. As others point out they play every week as the reserves are not good enough. Not only that but they often play 2 Vs 3 and with Ralph high press demands. Rom has a good few years left in him, but we do need some rotation to give them a couple of breathers.

His performances have tailed off; but likewise JWP, which curiously, rarely gets highlighted.   Fair enough I suppose that JWP's corners and free kicks tend to inflate what otherwise have been several months of very average general play.  My observation is that Romeu has been more effective/influential in open play than Ward-Prowse.   It is surprising that Ralph hasn't trusted Diallo more to give both of them a spell.

Thanks for posting. Oriol studious and thoughtful; he has the attributes to be a potentially excellent coach.

Clearly being frozen out. So harsh on a fantastic servant. There is still room for experienced players in our team.

I've got a hunch he's off to Spain, it'll be sad to be honest. I'd still be keen to keep players like him around, but if he wants to play every week you've got to be fair to him and let him go to somewhere he can.

He trains & travels with the first team and gets named in match day squad. Just because he didn't get off the bench, doesn't mean he's being frozen out. That would be if he trained with the U18 and stayed at home on match day.

Or he’s requested to leave?  We have no clue what’s going on, and we are only 3 games into the season so a little soon for such statements

I would absolutely keep him around. Thin on experienced players - and he’s still bloody good.

It depends on what he wants to go I guess. If he wants to play every week it would be harsh to keep him around to 'fill the bench for experience'. I think he's been good enough for us to deserve the opportunity to move on and play if it comes up.

Good point.  I just love Ori.

Semi-related, but Garner looks good.  Much more box-to-box than I thought.

Exactly. Why do people make it that Ralph has an issue with every player that doesnt play. He could have brought Ori on but Ralph/management team chose to bring another CB on instead. Hardly means hes frozen out, he played 75 mins in the Spurs game

Agreed. Love him as a player and seems a real genuine guy. Would be gutted to see him go, but he has been a terrific player for us.

He’s been a good servant but if he wants to move on and keep playing then it’s absolutely fair enough, we’ve got far more out of him than I ever thought we would.

RH has previously described him as the most professional player he's worked with.

Recent rumours of him leaving, so I'm not surprised at his lack of minutes.

Will be a shame if he does leave: been excellent for us.

Maybe he’s not 100% match fit? Maybe he’s being used sparingly because he is still seen as important?

Too important to play, that's a new one.

Because Lyanco did. It’s a squad game, no room for sentimentality.

Somewhat strange choice ahead of Romeu in centre-mid though?

All I meant was he maybe has to be managed, and we have much harder games to come.

Lyanco can drop into the 3rd CB spot and allows alpt more shape in the back 3 and generally makes us more solid with less space in the channels too attack generally.

We need to keep him even if he’s not a regular starter. I don’t go for all this old pony that we should “let him go if he wants to play week in week out”. He’s a good pro who’ll keep the ones that are playing on their toes as well as covering for injuries/suspensions. We’re not good enough to let players of his ability to leave just because he can’t get a game. If Diallo kicks on then maybe, but that’s not this window.

Feels like a suicidal move to me, especially in this new world of five subs.

Crazy to let our most experienced and reliable player go on the back of signing and 18 year old.
