Ralph Hasenhuttl

SuperSAINT

Very enthused about this potential appointment. No surprise we turn things around this quick now. Tells you all to know about the masterstroke moves behind the delayed Pellegrini departure.

Les leaving shows club picking back up its drive and energy and perhaps sense of temporarily lost direction.

Players like sims, Hesketh, Boufal might get a second guided chance now.

I think we’ll deffo be in for a new rightback. Cedric just doesn’t have the pace for Hasen’s formation

Ridiculously wrong

lol no he is not, he's just a solid PL footballer. The guy has played for England, 31 caps at U21 level and over 170 times in the PL and he's only 24. There are literally thousands of professional footballers who would love to be at his sort of level.

He contributes sod all to us, so as far as I’m concerned this next England captain in the making I’ve been hearing of for the last 5 years- is still here, after all the super sales we’ve had, with 0 attempts by ANYONE to take him off our books.

Says all you need to know really.

Good riddance

Thought Watford were after him last Summer? Might be wrong.

I'm wondering if we will generate a transfer budget for the new manager in Jan by selling JWP and Targett. With £15m for each we could buy a first teamer for £30m

I'm sure some will have to go make room. But who?

Forster unlikely to go / Davis to Rangers mentioned / Long to Sheff Utd mentioned / Gallagher will no doubt have admirers / Gabbi is always wanted by Italian clubs / Targett a possibility but we only really have 2 left backs

This will be the making of JWP, mark my words...

Far to slow for his system, same goes for Austin and Gabbi, the real winners will be our wingers who he likes to play behind two pacey strikers.

I'd probably say that he would want to get rid of Austin, Gabbi, Davis and Jwp to make way for Sims, Hesketh, Harry Reed and Gallagher.

A friend of mine who is a big Blackburn fan told me that Reed has been excellent this season and doesn't let the opposition on the ball for to long, perfect for Hassenhuttl system.

Hard to do any thing from the bench, but as we on the subject not including most now no longer with the team but local hero Tadic, this is what JWP has compared to others, Ready?

Since 2016 - 2017 season ( EPL only not including cups ) we have

Redmond's 8 goals 4 assists 6093 mins

Austin 13 goals 0 assists 2495 mins

Gabbie 9 goals 0 assists 2186 mins

JWP 7 goals 7 assists 3797 mins

Long 5 goals 1 assists 3285 mins

Tadic 9 goals 8 assists mins? lots as he played every game all game pretty much. ( but I didn't check welcome too at https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk I gave up after doing those ones above. )

Bertrand 3 goals 8 assists

Davis 3 goals 3 assists

Lamina 1 goals 2 assists

Ings 4 goals 1 assists

Armstrong 3 goals 0 assists

Hoj 2 goals 0 assists

Cedric 3 goals 7 assists

I think your all way to harsh on JWP.

That makes three of us, at the very least :D Definitely had his best season under Poch

I like him! tend to think we’re better when he starts, never hides from the ball like some do and very rarely gives it away. I realise he hasn’t justified my opinion in his sub appearances this season but when he has a run in the side I really like him.

there certainly are, but that's irrelevant when it comes to Saints winning games of football.

What matters is how many starting midfielders in the Premiership are better than him right now? In my opinion it a lot of them.

By the way, you can put together a pretty **** Premiership side from players with a lot of England U21 caps (many in the top 10 most capped players), the odd senior cap and plenty of Premiership games:

Scott Carson 20 U21 aps/4 Sr caps

Keiran Richardson 12 U21 caps, 8 Sr caps

Michael Mancienne 30 U21 caps

Steven Taylor 20 U21 caps/1 B cap

Carl Jenkinson 14 U21 caps/1 Sr cap

JWP 31 U21 caps/1 Sr cap

Chalabah 40 U21 caps/1 Sr cap

Huddlestone 33 caps/4 Sr caps

Redmond 38 U21 Caps/1 Sr Cap

Saido Berahino 11 U21 caps/4 Sr Caps Burundi

Francis Jeffers 16 U21 caps/1 Sr Cap

This jumped out at me. Didn't Cedric just get his first EPL goal on Saturday? He has 1 other, against Wigan in the cup last season. Are the other stats similarly incorrect?

Northampton's finest export (though he claims to be either French or an Arab or both) has form for making numbers up (see his transfer spend meltdown). I wouldn't put it past him.

https://www.football365.com/news/an-intro-to-ralph-hasenhuttl-the-alpine-klopp

“Ralph has everything. He is collecting continental experience with Leipzig already, he and his team are in the top spots of Bundesliga, he integrated really well into the club and is making the next step. But give him time to improve and gather experience, so that we don’t put pressure on this great personality for something that might come too early.

“His basic talent is extraordinary, and that is what makes him a perfect for Bayern, some time. I think that for Ralph, Leipzig will still be a great fit for many years to come. They have a clear idea and philosophy that work together with his thoughts. Plus, the experience that he gathers every year and in every single European game. That’s what makes him – and Leipzig might be angry about this – but that makes him a perfect fit to become Bayern coach or a coach of another great team. He’s got the potential, but he will need some time.”

– Former Bayern Munich sporting director Matthias Sammer in October 2017

JWP 7 goals 7 assists 3797 mins

Let me get this right, our alleged "DEAD BALL SPECIALIST TM" has 7 assists in 42 games?

Looking at it.

17/18 - 35 games apps 5 goals and 4 assists

16/17 - 43 games apps 4 goals and 5 assists.

I wonder how many corners, freekicks and other dead balls he has taken in those stats? Hardly awe inspiring stuff.

To maybe play devils advocate slightly. Saints have the third highest shots on target this season, but something like third from bottom conversion rate. Somewhere around 5% I think from memory.

So, JWP, and others, could put the ball on a plate for players, but if they don’t score, it won’t go down as an assist.

The bar for assists and goals in our team is quite low.

Redmond for example has 1 goal and 3 assists in 45 appearances, this season and last. Stretch it out further and he has 8 goals, 4 assists in 80 games. And even if you claim he didn't take set pieces, he played more minutes and in more advanced positions than JWP.

Simple fact is over the last two years JWPs contribution to the team is no worse off than anyone elses, and its better than most of them, and he played less minutes. Certainly you can be critical he should do more and I'd agree, but people claiming he is crap and doesn't do anything are way off.

Anyway IMO everyone has a clean slate under the new manager to show what they can do, new ideas, new system, new style of play, we'll see who impresses, I presume if this guy keeps us up there will be a cull in the summer anyway and a rebuilding job for those who miss the cut.

Not sure on that, would really like him to nail a place down and actually progress like many thought he would but if we go with what Ralph did at Leipzig, he had two highly mobile centre-mids that had to cover a lot of ground, one of which was Keita. The other was a little more sitting/protect the back 4 style.

JWP for me lacks the pace and power for either of those roles, but we'll see, he definitely has the energy and the work rate, so that may put him in good stead and he also has good ability to pick out a pass and Ralph likes to more direct passes in the transition for the fast-counter so that may also work in our favour.

But to be honest I reckon if he goes for a similar formation he'll go for Lemina/Hojberg rotating as that 'Keita' role with probably Romeu as the more sitting centre mid.

Someone who I think might benefit is Gallagher, at Leipzig they tended to partner a bigger/stronger forward with Werner, and Gallagher apparently has pace to go with his size so may get a chance to show what he can do. If he can show the pressing work rate and add the link play then he could become an important player.

Gallagher's record in the Championship is 'patchy' at best. 6 goals for Brum, double figures at Blackburn and 0 at MK Dons IIRC. I've played against blokes who were 6'2" and lightning quick in my old Monday night 5-a-side league but you've got to be good enough to go with that.

I'll play Devils, Devils advocate.

Arguably his "best" (according to fans) seasons under mopo

46 apps - 0 Goals - 4 Assists. Hardly awe inspiring, and we had no problems converting chances then.

His actual best times were under Koeman.

69 apps - 3 goals - 15 Assists.

But on the other hand Tadic churned out this

77 apps - 14 goals - 23 assists.

I guess it helped he had a target man in Pelle.

Personally, his all round game isn't good enough for me.

Blackburn and Birmingham were both amongst the worst teams in the league at the team, both went through several managers. His record considering that is not bad.

Very pleased with this one. The calibre of manager we should have got after Koeman left.

4th time lucky I hope

Sure you've received alot of PMs on this pal; but where do you think the inspiration or initiative for this appointment has come from?

Finally got a manager in that will make me super proud to be a Saint again.

A chance of beating a top 6 club, get spoken about on the TV and radio more plus have our youngsters turning out for the first team like they did under Poch.

Exciting times and well done all those that have made this happen.

If Mitchell was to arrive after his notice is seen out then our plans in the next two years will be even more exciting.

Anyone got any ideas about who Ralph H will bring in with him, assuming he is not going to rely on our two GK coaches as his team. Did he have a backup team at RBL that left with him?

I like the idea of RH, he looks like he may be just waht we need (never heard of him before). My concern really is whether he can get our current crop of poor quality players to perform in anything like his style in the remainder of this season. You cannot suddenly transform a unch of players who give the appearance of being unfit into a high pressing outfit. That sort of fitness requires pre-season preparation, you cannot add that mid season (at least not in a PL mid season when games come thick and fast). There are very few of our players who seem to fit the mould, Long (but he can's score), Lemina, Redmond, maybe Ings and hopefully Armstrong and Hojbjerg. What Ralph will make of Austin, JWP and Vestegaard God only knows.

In the end we can only get back to the old ways (I hesitate to use the term Southampton Way) when we have a Board that has a vision and a plan, while we are stuck with Krueger and Kat and what Gao seems to offer (i.e. nothing) it will not happen, whoever the manager and DoF is. We also need to be a bit more ruthless and upgrade on Watson and dare I say Kelv.
