Unlucky. But good performance. The fans need to have some perspective on this one. We really should have won this. Hit the woodwork numerous times, ball cleared off the line, another goal ruled out harshly.

Out and not bad enough performance to sack Hughes. And he won't realise absence of Hoedt key. Worst possible scenario. Unless he keeps same team?

Stings less knowing it's City to play but FFS can we just have a break.

If a team plays well against us they stuff us.

If a team plays **** against us we can't score or let them have an easy late goal.

If we play well, we still get shafted by refs and the rub of the green.

Give us a ****ing break!

Decent enough play. I'm really not bothered we are out,

But the decision to VAR cancel the goal is annoying and typical of any attempt we make to try and build some confidence / momentum.

Posted

Decent performance and arguably a valid goal disallowed. Probably the worst outcome for the 'Hughes Out' camp (of which I am one) as I suspect the performance will outweigh the result in the eyes of the Board

Posted

Hit the crossbar twice, miss an open goal, have a (apparently) perfectly good goal disallowed by VAR and ended up losing in sudden death in a penalty shoot out.

Is it possible to just forfeit a season?

Glad to see valery playing well.

Obafemi certainly has someth8ng too him even if he should have scored.

Those 3 center backs seem to me to be perfect c9mb8nation if you are go8ng to play 5 at the back.

Gabbi should never take penalties

Glad Hughes didn’t get win to alleviate pressure. Hopefully he’ll be gone after United game.

Irrespective of the pens, we actually played well tonight. Lots of positives, 3-0 wouldn't have flattered us imo. That said it's only the league cup and Leicester have been dog****.

For once we have been unlucky. (Not every week as Hughes would suggest)

Pens - Gunn nowhere near any of them. 2 ****e identikit pens from Leicester should have saved them both.

Would realistically like to see Obafemi start on Saturday with Ings/Redmond, Armstrong behind, Vestergaard in for Hoedt. Would like to see Valery for Cedric but won't happen. Stephens in if a 3, was decent.

Hoedt, Austin should be nowhere near the 11 or even on the bench.

It's all irrelevant at the mo, regarding Hughes. He will be sacked, as and when Les Reed's replacement is appointed and decides who he wants in charge. We aren't going to sack him and put Jaidi or Kelvin in charge for a month.

Gotta say ,whilst we are undoubtedly ****, we aren’t getting much luck.

Can we all agree Vardy is a tosser?

He did a 'community visit' to the primary school my wife taught in, in Fleetwood, and every 3rd word he spoke was a crudity. A truly vile example of humanity.

Played well again and deserved to win .....but no luck ! Same 3 centre backs v Utd please !

Seems Saints are always unlucky............strange it never balances out as luck is meant to!!

I sense "totally useless" might be a better description. Even with numerous gilt edged opportunities they manage to throw the game away.............hopeless!!

Rare a team lose after scoring 5 pens, but our keeper didn’t get anywhere near any of theirs. My Leicester supporting mate was there and he text me saying if that’s a weakened side, how are we in the bottom 3. Annoyed rather than disappointed.

Whatever football gods we have offended we must go to the temple and pray for forgiveness. How we managed to lose that game is astonishing. Underside of the bar twice, a disallowed goal (didn't get to see a replay so can't tell if it was good or not), a fluffed open net chance for Obafemi. We should have won that easily.

Will have done the opposite of build confidence for our strikers. Gunn is no penalty-saver either...wasn't close to any one of them.

Saints supporters sounded good at the end.

To answer LGTL’s question on the match thread about Gabbi and whether he’d missed both pens he’d taken for us, IIRC it is:

- MU home missed

- Newcastle home scored

- Wigan away missed

- Tonight missed

25%. Lambert and MLT it is not (or Beats). What I’d give for any of those three on the pitch.

Can’t fault the effort tonight but those just aren’t Southampton calibre players as we would recognise over the years. Valery looked an improvement on Cedric though. Not hard admittedly. Stephens did alright and Vestergaard OK, Yoshi iffy. Looked better without that useless **** Hoedt, I’m sure Hughes his manager/lover will play him v Man U.

WTF with Gunn on the penalties? Looked a keeper when he joined but shows you the difference between Man City level coaching and the Southern Premier League coaches at Saints. To think, the players actually used to be improved by the coaching at the club but that’s when anyone gave a turd about the standard of their work at the club.

Was it a weakened side, really? Soares has been sh*t and so Valery couldn't really have been worse. Bertrand struts around and Targett is looking fairly decent again (well he did). And Obafemi has just as much right to start as any of the other non-scoring forwards.

Scary really.

To be fair, that last thing we needed, was to add City to this run of games...

Man U (H)

Spurs (A)

Cardiff (A)

CITY WOULD HAVE GONE HERE

Arsenal (H)

With one minute to play, and no injury time, with the game going to penalties, and Austin and even JWP on the bench, I question Hughes's decision to bring on Gabbiadini anyway. That was either a sub that needed to be made twenty minutes earlier, or it should have been someone more specialist at taking penalties.

Hughes out.

Sounds like genuinely unlucky today. The clean sheet is encouraging at least. Will Hughes stick with that formation and the same centre backs for Man U? I think he should.

For those who watched the stream, how did Valery look? And Vestergaard?

On the way back. Should have won. Didn’t. Hate Vardy. Luck has to change soon. Despite missing that absolute sitter, obafemi’s got something about him.

What was Gunn doing for the pens? I mean we’ve only got three keepers on the coaching staff. Have a word lads - less dancing more diving.

IIRC he did the same thing in the last round at Everton as well. Left the best penalty takers in the squad on the bench.

I only saw the second half. Until Davis came on we were pressing the life out of them. Davis immediately failed to press hard and Lamina looked as though he took the opportunity to copy Davis. Saints right side with Valery and Stephens looked very solid. Cedric lost his man yet again although he was on his wrong side.

When are they going to put their foot through close in chances. The first ten penalties showed the keeper would have little chance. Gabbiadini on Saturday missed a sitter half hit just like his penalty. Obefemi tonight looking for a tap in, just hit it.

The back five were fine, the three midfielders put in a good shift, Redmond has got the bit between his teeth, unlucky to hit the bar, even unluckier for the disallowed goal, pushed by two players got through and a ricochet hit his arm and rebounded

How the hell he was going to avoid that nobody knows. Obefemi worked hard , showed good strength and pace but very raw.

Obefemi needs game time to adjust to the pace of the Premier League. With the misfiring forwards that are being used he deserves another game or two.

Not that we have anyone clearly better is it?

Posted

Think it goes to show that any line up without Hoedt is capable.

Stephens, Yoshi, Vest - they are all better CB's.

Valery was a beast. Redmond did well. Obafemi looks a handful if nothing else. Midfield 3 were good.

I know its popular to hate hughes, but our performances have been solid recently (bar city). I honestly think we are very low on confidence and we just need to get some luck and a wiin and things will improve.
