Cant see a thread on this, but it may have been hidden away on another thread....so. sorry if already posted....

As per this article, Liverpool have a 100m Euro transfer charge on any dealings with Barcelona, due to Mascherano, Suarez and Coutinho going that way and (presumably) their desire to stop VVD, Mane, Salah etc going in future.

Makes you wonder why we didnt do something similar. I know we got good deals, and ultimately, players want to go.....but it may have slowed down the exodus somewhat!

Presumably because we were quite happy they kept giving us money for our players, because we thought then that we were able to forever replace on the cheap because of the black box.

Exactly this. The strategy was to buy players to put them in the shop window to sell, why would the club put a restriction on our best customer?

We certainly didn't get a good deal for Mane, considering what Liverpool paid for Keita and Van Dijk and Mane's importance to our team. Liverpool got a bargain, especially when you see how much money we've had to spend, to bring in players who aren't even a quarter the player he was in a Saints shirt!

Because why would we want to prevent ourselves from selling players when our entire business model is based on it?

Its not about preventing them from being sold, its was more about how me may have been able to slow down the exodus, and squeeze more money out of the buying club. Yes, all our decent players have left, just think we may have missed a trick.

Slapping a £30 - £50m charge on any transfer dealings wouldnt have put the likes of City and Liverpool off, but we may have got some extra £££ out of it.

"How much do you want for Salah?"

"£100m"

"Ok"

"Ah but you have to pay that extra charge remember?!"

"Ok, we offer you £0m"

"Right, so 0 + 100 = £100m... sold."

Is pretty much how it will work. Utterly pointless. No-one forces Liverpool to sell for a price they're not happy with.

This is the football equivalent of a shop doubling the price of goods and then selling them as, "Massive 50% off! Wow! Amazing deals, offer ends soon!" but in reverse.

Liverpool wouldn't have paid us £50m extra for VvD for example. It would have been £25m, with the £50m on top. This arrangement is basically meaningless.
