It's strange how you write so much good stuff about Saints and the games we watch but have prosecuted this blinkered, negative view of Steven Davis - who is clearly now in decline but has been a tremendous asset for the Club and NI. Even now, he looks a better midfielder than JWP, yet your forensic eye has somehow missed our dead ball specialist.

Fair enough - it's been obvious you haven't been on a wind up, and I take your point, that even in his pomp, Davis was at times poor defensively. It will be interesting to see if Armstrong fills that AM role consistently well which is where I thought Steven Davis was best placed.

The fact that he's behind JWP in the assist table despite having played the equivalent of over 55 full matches more (14000 minutes vs 9000 minutes), says pretty much everything you need to know about what a mediocre player he's been for us.

It would have to be his retirement club, and i'm not sure they could match his wages? Personally i think SD could thrive under RH. For his age Davis has a tremendous engine on him. He's probably one of the quickest to press out of our midfielders, and reads the game well. You can't replace players like SD, not in relegation fights. You need the older player's around the place. Even if it's off the bench, Davis should stay until the summer.Totally agree. Discarded too early and has a role to play.

Since lists were taken I'll bet. Terry Paine laid on more goals in his 700 ish games than anyone on the list. He was the most accurate crosser of a ball I've ever seen. Steven Davis not even in the same class. Ron Davies used to get better than twenty goals a season from his crosses alone. The team used to score anything between eighty and a hundred a year. He never tackles head on, always slows up making sure he doesn't have to, pulls out if there is any chance of contact and presses from too far away allowing the opponent to bypass him. As for tracking mostly goes halfway then has his head in his hands after the player he stopped tracking scores. He's out of contract on 30th June.

I saw an engine that was going strong for the whole 90+ minutes against Spurs, whereas Armstrong went off after 80 minutes, and Austin was blowing out of his arse after 10 minutes.

I can't imagine their policy of the last 3 seasons has helped their finances. Regardless, Davo would be a top signing for them. He'd be a class apart up there.

Wouldnt it be better to promote more from u23 like Slattery rather than a proven past it player or someone out of position? Only way a player can return to form is playing up to manager to get arm round him and get him back to self belief and form. Wish Davis good luck wherever he goes...if he goes.

Rangers would be a good move all round but would like to see him return as a coach in the future. He must despair at sharing a dressing room with Lemina, Hoedt, Cedric, Moi et al. Gerrard won’t tolerate that rubbish so he’ll find it a more professional environment. Hopefully Ralph is allowed to rip the current shower apart and bring in a few younger legs with Davo’s attitude and work ethic. Getting rid of the dozen or so wastrels that need to go in the next couple pile of weeks won’t be easy though.
