Saints to give £250,000 to Gift to Richard Scudamore

As most people have said, nothing but scandalous and hopefully SFC will for once prove they have some backbone and tell Buck and his Chelsea cronies where to go. After all, if Buck loves his mate so much, he can pay all of it...he must have the money after all.

However if Saints go along with this charade, then I'm sure they will recoup the loss by whacking up season ticket prices and everything else fans pay for on match days. Oh and probably to watch more of the dire rubbish the team have served up the last two or three years.

Personally, I think the vast majority of senior management in all businesses are "dodgy" at best and some are corrupt. Just look at the banks scandals and Tesco as examples of this.

I've got a much better idea where Saints could pay that £250k towards, saying that a season ticket is about £500, how about renewing 500 free season tickets away in a ballot or draw. Think the club would get slightly better publicity doing that.

‘All’ businesses???? Lol

On top of his £2.2 mil salary I'd be very surprised if he didn't have some built-in incentive bonus(es) plus pension contributions to boot !

I would also expect that there is a 'golden farewell' payment from his employers so why in hell's name they need a whip round from the clubs to top it up baffles me !

The rich get richer and all that.....

Do none of you have a whip around at work when someone is leaving? This is just one of those things you know.

A quick collection between work colleges, to get him a bottle of plonk, and a card at main reception for any one who would like to sign it. There will be drinks after work, at the pub around the corner, on Richard's last day for anyone who wishes to say farewell.

At that money saints could build a 4G local pitch. They could name it it The Richard Scudamore Memorial Pitch and keep everybody happy unless the guy really is a money-grabbing whatsit..

I think you could probably build 2, which means just with that money alone you could have another 30-40 3G pitches across the country which literally could provide facilities to 1000s of kids.

And waterlogged pitches for kids is a massive problem in this country, so many games get called of every week and the 3G pitches are often booked up months in advance.

I imagine anyone who has ever played Saturday/Sunday games has the same issue; December - January games get called off then you play massive amounts of games with bare bone sides around February. We would play Monday, Weds, Saturday just to catch up.

The amount that money could do would make a difference, but instead they want to line a very wealthy mans pocket even more. Absolutely discraseful.

Why is it only the 20 current EPL clubs are expected to fund this "gift" when he's been leader for the past 20 years and plenty of ex-EPL clubs have also benefited from his "successful leadership"?

How about the likes of Stoke City, West Brom, Aston Villa etc. chip in given that they have presumably profited from years of EPL income (and still collecting parachute payments), compared to the likes of Brighton and Huddersfield who are relative newcomers to the EPL cash machine?

Of course, how about they quietly ditch the whole idea and give him a gold watch and a farewell card like the rest of us would get at retirement?

Yeah..make Pompey pay 250k for the money he earned them when they were there!

Personally I couldn care what he gets paid bu it's Absolutely disgraceful if this payment is not based upon merit payments during his tenure. It's not funny that the big clubs want a bigger share of income but are happy to let other clubs pay the same share of out goings!

It'll be a disgrace if the club turn down this reasonable request, for a man that has done so much for this club and English football. I would expect a bucket collection, and fans to give generously should the club decide not to contribute.

Saint Mickey

You are a very nice person understanding the contribution Mr Scudamore has made to English football

I would be happy to contribute the odd coin to ensure Mr Scudamore avoids poverty in his old age.

I think the likes of Wolves and Fulham should be taken to task for questioning the £250k per club contribution.

Perhaps our club should suggest upping the contribution to set an example.

I am sure many of us season ticket would be happy to pay an additional £50 or so per person to help this deserving cause

Privatise the profits and socialise the losses? That'll never catch on.

Will 'fan power' make the rich cats see sense?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/46221020

Diabolical idea from the off, hate these ****s who continually have their snout in the trough.

I hope so. It really is a joke, and pathetic for the guy to even entertain the idea. As others have rightly said, he'd leave a much better legacy if he could ask clubs who may want to get involved to donate to local grassroots and community football schemes.

Been accepted and he has confirmed he will accept it.

Nail in the coffin with regards to my season ticket - having a poor squad and not finishing in the top ten is just part of being a football fan.

But this Premier League spectacle is a sham and football fans get fleeced.

I hope we go down so I can renew but I will not if we are still in this league

The Echo suggest we're one of the ones not keen to make the payment. If so' date=' well done us![/quote']

Not keen, but we did anyway? I'd take much more pride if it was announced that Scudamore was paid £4.75m because 1 team (Southampton) refused to contirbute.

The sooner we're relegated out of this toddy league the better. Then we can play in a genuinely competitive league and when we when it we can refuse promotion and attempt to be the first club to win back to back championships.

This for me. Had a gutful of this league now. I don’t care if we go down. I want to be entertained and I want the feel good factor when we win so frankly the league is irrelevant

Just when you thought you couldn’t hate modern football any more.

It’s ****ing disgusting, handing a £5mill gift to that **** when there are way more important causes in the community that could be helped.

The thing is if Saints go down and go bust again they will soon have the begging bowls out, ****ing tossers.

Absolutely spot on. The greed in football is ruining the game for most fans and maybe Scudamore and the clubs all sucking up to him should think about people who are relying on food banks, doctors and nurses who are under ridiculous pressure to look after patients and are paid poorly for the nature of the job. The emergency services who often put themselves in danger to save lives, need I go on.

There are so many worthwhile causes that Saints could be putting this money into. What would actually happen if we told them we were not paying it. Are they going to kick us out of the league? But Saints as a club are truly gutless so they just meekly follow the rest.

While it won't happen, I'd love to see the whole saints fan base boycott any home FA cup third round tie and leave them with a totally empty ground, bit like it being played behind closed doors bar away fans who you never know may even join the boycott.

Think Saints fans sticking together in solidarity and saying "F*** you" would be an amazingly powerful statement. I long to see the day a team's fans have the courage to do this as I think other teams would soon follow suit. I've had enough of the greed league, football has become detached from reality!

Yeah, you're right but I guess what I was really trying to say is it would be a "f*** you" to the people who run our club, more than a message to the FA or the Premier League.

The problem with doing it for a league game is people have already paid for season tickets etc so the club wouldn't be bothered to be honest. At least with a cup game, everyone has to pay out for a match ticket including ST holders as far as I'm aware so that way, the fans would not lose out as such and an empty ground would raise eyebrows and make a point at the very least.

As the Bayern Munich banner in their protest at Arsenal 3 years ago said......"Without fans, Football is not worth a penny".

Not that I think anyone could possibly be in any doubt, but this demonstrates that football is first and foremost a business. As a business model, he's done pretty well for the clubs so there is nothing particularly strange with the £250k request (and at least there wasn't a golden parachute for the new woman). But the problem here is the somewhat dichotomous view of football from those that run clubs and the supporters. We supporters, while we realise it (PL esp) is pretty much nothing but business these days, still hold on to the sporting side of it. I think we always will. We grew up with it. In the garden, in parks, at school, etc etc. We can see that the PL rakes in all the money, and even with their meagre downward payments, that nothing filters down to the grass roots (or rather not enough). We can see a man doing a good job and being very well remunerated. We cannot understand why he needs a golden handshake when he has decided to retire from the job. If he was on £60k a year rather than £2.5m then maybe.

Football is a unique business, not least because of the relationship with supporters and the local community. This £5m payment is something so alien to supporters, that it causes revulsion. It would have been much better to have increased his pension, whatever that might be, although the payment will go through, supporters will chunter about it, life will carry on and we'll go back to taking what we are given, or leaving the "sport". I do think that the PL should be a little careful, as there does seem to be a lot of discontent amongst supporters about the state of things. Stadia are still largely full (not SMS), so things are likely to carry on. But it won't take much for attendances to fall. So many people think that the PL is so wonderful as we have 6 teams competing at the top, while many other leagues have 1 or 2. Yes that's great if you support one of the 6, but boring as hell if you don't.

What makes you think we will get a feel good factor? just because it worked last time? It would be so easy to 'do a Sunderland' under the present regime

Here's the reply I received from the club regarding my email I sent questioning it !

Thank you for taking the time to contact us.

The decision around payments to Mr Scudamore over the next three years has been made by the Premier League Audit and Remuneration Committee and the Non-Executive Directors. As per the statement made by the Premier League the payments are in consideration of the following:

It was vital that a comprehensive set of non-compete clauses were extended, to ensure the best possible protection for the future of the Premier League.

It was agreed that it is crucial for the League’s ongoing success that Richard’s unique knowledge and experience remain available in an advisory capacity.

The payments are in recognition of the outstanding work Richard has carried out over the last 19 years.

We will not be adding anything further to this statement.

£5mill to give a bit of advice - **** me, these ****s really are on a different planet.

Considering there is a fair chance we will go down this year you would think SFC would be a bit more careful with their money.

We should make this a sticky for when they start handing out redundancies and asking us to throw money in a bucket.

I might be wrong but I read "none compete clause" as basically a bribe to stop him for working for another competitor ?

Yes, he's obviously a genius at everything he may try and must be kept on a leash.

The PL would not be where it is today without the influence if a handful of extremely wealthy club owners, and the slick marketing of Sky, BT Sport etc. That the guts have been ripped out of the "English" game matters not to these b*****ds, as long as the cash keeps rolling in and kids in Asia keep buying the shirts. It's obvious from the crass reply to the above email that SFC will hand over the money, they may as well have added ..." and don't bother us again with this you little pleb". The whole idea stinks, if it was felt that the non compete bribe was necessary why don't the PL just stump up the readies and avoid the controvercy ?

I dont think this was open to a full vote and therefore the clubs were forced in to it. The also rans in the Prem like West Ham or Spurs are **** scared of the football money tree deserting them, so Scudamore has been given a golden handcuff so he doesn't take his contact list and influence elsewhere, especially to one of these new football organisations forming at the moment.
