Shame about Hoedt, him and Stephens had been looking quite solid (excluding the Man City match obviously). I imagine Vestergaard will come in.

He's never looked solid. Don't let a 0-0 against non-attacking Newcastle fool you. He is absolute dog ****e in my opinion, one of the guys who needs to go ASAP. Hopefully him being out allows someone else to secure their own spot in the team so we don't have to endure daddy longlegs ever again.

Be lovely if we could see Vestergaard and Yoshi; you know, our two best defenders playing together (imo)

Yes, well would be interesting to see if Hughes actually was being told who to play (or not as the case may be) to see if he really is poor a judge of a player as some of his selections have shown. Fingers crossed for Yoshi, Vestergaard and Gabbiadini back in the team!

Deeney should be back in the squad for the weekend according to their coach.

Terrific.

Thats fine by me if we play Yoshida/Vest, given that they can actually win a header. Anything else is a disaster.

I'll be very, very interested to see if Yoshida comes back in now. My guess is yes if the damage isn't already done.

Yep. The people on here...

Him and Stephens were brilliant at Bournemouth. They score for fun, most defences will struggle with them. I know he's not popular on here and he hasn't played brilliantly at times but recently he had improved.

He have a falling out with Reed then??

Falling out with someone, I don’t know who but I’d put my money on it being Reed

Did Reed pick the team? I just assume(d) Hughes doesn't rate him - which is fairly believeable as he has been poor for as much time as good at Saints.

If Yoshida isn't playing because of a fall out with Reed, I'd say that says more about Mark Hughes than Les. Pathetic if Hughes is not picking players because uncle Les says so.

Imagine having a boss who directed you on what they wanted done. Crazy concept!

There was a piece on the BBC recently where Carlos Carvajal said directly that he was told to play certain players or lose his job. In the end he threw in the towel. We’re a bigger club than he’s managed so if Les had a money making/player specific agenda there’s really no reason for Hughes not to toe the line. He must’ve known what he was signing up for after all.

Hughes: "Hoedt a doubt for the weekend (sore foot)"

Good news, fingers crossed it keeps him out. I'm not surprised he has a sore foot given that he only ever uses the one. I bet it's the outside of his foot as well, the part that always slices it towards his own goal.

Have people completely invented a story about Les Reed blocking Yoshida playing? How strange.

Is it that strange? I’d say the way Fonte was clearly being blocked from playing in our Europa League campaign suggests truth isn’t stranger than fiction.

He wasn’t blocked, another club who were due to come in for him were also involved in a European campaign and playing for us in Europe would have decreased his asking price

Not doubting your info, but makes me wonder why Fonte was included on the bench for our Europa League games if there was never any intention of him coming on?

not United surely?

I don't believe that personally, I think we were just rotating players and Fonte was too old to play in everything.

If it is true, it's right up there with the "WTF were you thinking Les!?" moments, like the Ings and Carrillo transfers.

Yoshida has never been a regular starter and it's often commented on that he regularly makes errors that lead to goals. I think Hughes probably didn't play him for the simple reason that he's always been a squad player that has rarely commanded a regular starting place in the last six years. He's just not what Hughes sees as a player to build a team around. This is much more sensible than Les Reed personally ruling that he shouldn't play.

The problem with these silly stories with no foundation is that they get repeated often enough that they are eventually just accepted as "what everyone knows". Hughes rates Hoedt, but not Yoshida.

^or, Hoedt is younger, has more potential, and ideally what we want by continually playing him is for him to become the new VVD, whereby we can sell and make profits!

That is my personal belief why we continuously play Hoedt... he is far likelier to generate profits than Maya is.

But we were told that was one of the main reasons for getting Hughes - he wouldn't let Reed interfere, he'll be hard on the players and shake things up. He won't put up with any ****.

Thank God our fans are such good judges of character eh?

The latter, I was thinking Kepa cost £65m.

The point stands, I don't see either Gunn or Pickford being that good.

I didn't say it would happen - it's just how I interpret the thinking behind paying a fair whack for what looks on the face of it, a reserve keeper. Gunn had a lot of hype behind him when he first emerged at City, so I suspect the club jumped at the chance to acquire a young potential England international on the assumption that his value will rise significantly, despite the fact that there were more pressing needs in the squad.

With Kepa and Alisson setting the bar for prices, the likes of Pickford would easily go for £50m in this market.

Liverpool asking for £20m for a player who has barely played for 3 years due fitness problems. Nobody bites and on the last day of the transfer window we come in and pay the full asking price, with no option on the loan if he gets injured again.

If Reed and Hunter really had become a negative presence at the Club then we should expect a solid win against Watford. A loss should finish Hughes off.

It's been pretty evident for the last few years that the Academy was no longer producing PL class players, even their style of play was hard to determine for both the 18's and 23's. I've watched quite a few of the junior games in that time and have despaired of seeing any progress in patterns of play or of individual players. Indeed many kids such as Valery seem to have gone backwards. The finger had to be pointed at Hunter sooner or later and he deserves to go for this most serious of failures, as a strong Academy was supposed to be the way we combated the big money teams to hold our own at the top of the PL.

Good riddance to Reed and good riddance to Hunter and I hope a few more will follow them out the door soon.

Except that this silly story came directly from someone in the club, with direct access to first team players and board members.

Whilst it is unlikely that Reed told Hughes not to play someone, it is entirely feasible that he told Hughes that a player had to start in order to maintain his value. I'll let you work out who.

PS I have absolutely no evidence for this assertion.

Hunter has been a total disaster, have been saying it for years. Transformed our Academy from one of the best (some might say the best in the country), to one of the poorest on his watch. He should have gone years ago, but clearly was mates with Les, so was safe while he was still around. You have to question whether Matt Hale should have gone as well, but maybe without the shackles of Hunter he might prove to be the man to turn it around. It was a bad day for Saints when Matt Crocker left for England.

While I get your point, imagine where we would be right now without him!

Lets hope so..

Agree!

Maya is as loyal!!!!!

I read his book.

There were rumours on this board about Chinese owner not wanting Japanese players but I hope it's not true!

He's been our captain and always gives 100%.

I don't understand why he is out of favour. He admits occasional f ups in his book but explains in his book how he trains to avoid the same mistakes.

If that is the team, and you've been right every other time, then it certainly does point to Mr Reed dictating things previously.

Gabi as a wide man? I don't think you are very well:(

Gabbi is a wide man (or at least an inside forward). He has never been a 1 up top striker - which is why he was famed in Italy for cutting inside and smashing them in from 25 yards.

How do you figure that? What that line up says to me is Hughes is running out of ideas and getting a bit desperate..

Posted

Just like things didn't instantly go bad after Reed took over (huge positive momentum)

They won't instantly improve now he's left either. (huge negative momentum)

I'm expecting a new optimism, freedom and desire now we are finally free of the Leslie shackles.... But could honestly take months for that to translate to results and possibly years before we fully recover on/off the field.

Fans need to unite and stick together while we recover.
