Saints vs Watford - Build Up

Recommended Posts

This is our last home game before the 26th November. The significance being that if we fail to win it will be one win at St Mary’s in the last year. In that period, Leicester will have won more games at St Mary’s than we have.

Going to this one but other than a couple of beers with my mates I have little interest.

Watford lost to Newcastle yesterday, they'll be looking to bounce back.

Gabbi? Vestergaard?

Personally I can see us going with the same team as today. Perhaps shift Obefemi on earlier if we continue to not score (clutching at straws).

Not surprised to see ticket sales are low for this, general feeling of doom and gloom. Most fans I speak expect us to be relegated, home form has been terrible for so long now nobody wants to go to St Mary's.

I think best we can hope for is a draw, still not sure where our goals will come from.

They've been offering out cheap tickets to Tyro teams for this game. None of the kids in my son's team were interested.

Watford at home. Watford. At home. Think how that feels. Three or four years ago it would have been a home banker. Now it's a case of wondering how many they will get. And how much more crushing that is than 6 at City

This wouldn’t be the time to point out that Watford have a decent record at St Mary’s then ?

They are a bit of a bogey team for us and have been since the 2003 semi final

This is a must win for Hughes and our club.

Hate to say it but we’ve got to dig in now and get behind Hughes and what little is left of our team after Reed and co’s dismantlement.

Hope we can shown Gao it’s worth investing and sacking the Boardroom before the manager.

We'll have a go. Redmond will run the ball out of play a few times and apologise to his teammates. Long will run around a miss a couple of good chances. JWP will stand over a few set pieces with his left arm in the air before dollying the ball into the arms of their keeper. Bertrand will jog about smiling looking effective without actually being effective. They will get a couple of chances whilst we flap about falling over the ball at the back and tuck them both away. 0-2.

McCarthy

Cedric Vestergaard Hoedt Bertrand

Redmond Lemina PEH Moi

Long Ings

Once the meltdown over City is over the team basically picks itself. Vestergaard has to play as he was simply signed to deal with the types of strikers Watford have. Lomg and Ings are the only combination that gets us goals and Moi back in over JWP.

We'll win. 2-0.

Eh? Play that formation with that midfield and Capoue, Doucoure and Hughes will run the game. And I wouldn't pick Vestergaard to play against an attack whose primary assets are the pace and movement of Pereyra and Delofeu.

I doubt we'll change the CB pairing, although I'd like Maya in the team. I know they had a torrid time yesterday, but IMO Cedric/Bertrand were more of a problem.

Quite like your personnel in attack, but I'd go 4231 with Obafemi playing in front of Redmond Ings Target (or Elyounoussi or JWP).

I'm close to thinking Bertrand needs to be dropped.

Long and Ings get us goals? When did this happen?

For me it’s got to be Gabbi and Ings, for 7 or 8 games. Not chucking Gabbi on with 25th minutes left of a game we’ve already lost, when the rest of the team has given up, and proclaim that he obviously isn’t good enough. A consistent run of starts together.

I'm inclined to agree. Bertrand for some unknown reason is doing a Van Dyke in not appearing to care. Sparky should drop him and put Targett at LB. Bring inSam Gallagher from loan and give the nippers a run out. Win or lose we just can't continue with some of the absolute rubbish we saw yesterday.

Gallagher is not on loan, he's still with us, but injured now. Agree we should try some of the U23 players. We may find some winners in there.

Last 10 games they've won once, drawn 4 and lost 5 against us, not really a bogey team.

Yeah, I thought that was a bizarre post. They did seem to always beat us in the seasons after the semi final but other than the handball goal last season they've largely been quite accomodating when we've played them recently.

Maybe playing the best team would be an idea?

McCarthy

Cedric Vestergaard Hoedt/Yoshida Bertrand

Redmond Lemina PEH Moi

Gabbi Ings

Get Targett and Bednarek back in the squad. JWP to come on second half to whip some crosses in if we're struggling

It would be a great idea but nobody (including the manager) seem to know what it is !!

They play 442. No different to us. Hughes and Pereya cut in from wide so we can match them up as long as we are aware they'll play narrowly. And you say that's their primary assets but they play very directly to a target man to get those involved so we have to deal with that. Stephens is ok on the ground but is awful in the air and he and Cedric will be targeted lile all of last season. Deeney or Success will exploit that so Veatergaard will be needed to deal with it and our CM's will need to be on hand to get second balls and deal with the power of Doucoure and Capoue.

Since the time they started together, we scored twice and then they didn't start together again until yesterday and we scored for the first time since.

Against Watford, IMO we really need the players to set the tone and come out at full pelt to help get the crowd behind them.

The obvious issue is that the players in their current state will probably be blowing hard after about 60 minutes!

But our home form is so desperate that I just think we have no option. The players we are picking every week are basically the best we have, there aren't many changes that can realistically be made. Get a home win on the board and hopefully it will give us a platform to build on for the rest of the season.
