Sheaf Saint Posted 18 October, 2018 Share Posted 18 October, 2018 https://twitter.com/SouthamptonFC/status/1052823743398125568 I really miss that team The rate we're going at the moment, we'll be lucky to score 8 goals at home all season.
trousers Posted 18 October, 2018 Share Posted 18 October, 2018 # Devil's advocate klaxon # Most of those goals were down to p1ss poor play by Sunderland. Can't remember the last time we played a team in recent times that were anywhere as inept as Sunderland were on that day. Transport today's squad into that game and I still reckon we'd have won comfortably.

Mannone had the worst game any PL keeper will ever have, and after number 5 went in they just threw in the towel. But credit where it's due - we put them to the sword ruthlessly. ericofarabia Posted 18 October, 2018 Share Posted 18 October, 2018 Back of a fag packet calculations but I think it has taken us 10 games back to the beginning of the year to score 8 goals at home this year
spyinthesky Posted 18 October, 2018 Share Posted 18 October, 2018 It was all down to an Aussie fan who was watching his first game at SMS. Dont think he has been back since and its all been downhill since then!!
norwaysaint Posted 18 October, 2018 Share Posted 18 October, 2018 We scored 8 in a match where Shane Long was one of the starting strikers. Mayuka came on to replace him. Funny to see Reed on the bench. He was on the fringes of the team four years ago and is no closer to playing for us now.
jawillwill Posted 18 October, 2018 Share Posted 18 October, 2018 Did Mayuka really come on in that game? I thought he left at least a year or two before?

No, this team would be 0-0 most of the match, then allow Sunderland to regain composure in the second half, get it together and score. The difference then is that the team didn't allow teams (i.e. like Sunderland here) time to regain composure and get more of a grip on their mistakes. disconnect Posted 18 October, 2018 Share Posted 18 October, 2018 It's especially weird as two of our best players at the time, Mane and Wanyama didnt even come onto the pitch until the 65th minute, by which point we were already 4-0 up. I noted that Shane Long didnt score...!
Pamplemousse Posted 18 October, 2018 Share Posted 18 October, 2018 The game could've been entirely different had Sunderland been given a penalty when it was still at 0-0. Think we would've ended up at 10 men too.

DuncanRG Posted 18 October, 2018 Share Posted 18 October, 2018 Two things I'll never forget about that game: - the Vergini own goal - the fact I'd become so bored of travelling to watch rubbish games against Sunderland home and away that I decided to give this one a miss! kwsaint Posted 18 October, 2018 Share Posted 18 October, 2018 For me it was walking back to the car, and someone stopping to ask me the score. Telling them that Saints had won 8-0 was completely unreal. Still not sure whether they believed me or not.

niceandfriendly Posted 18 October, 2018 Share Posted 18 October, 2018 Great day, and of course they'll come again. Ok next season in the Championship will be another struggle but once we get down to League 1 the big wins should start to return providing we manage it correctly. Stud mark of doom Posted 18 October, 2018 Share Posted 18 October, 2018 On this day 10 years ago we missed two penalties in the first 10 minutes and lost 0-3 to Watford. However, Sunderland was a great day
