Colinjb Posted 8 September, 2018 Share Posted 8 September, 2018 Looking at getting myself a new laptop for work. It needs to be able to handle word processing/excel and general office tasks and work well with the Google Chrome sphere. (Would rather not get a Chromebook though, don't want the device to be dependent of an internet connection all the time.) Before I plough in and get something, does anyone have any recommendations? buctootim Posted 10 September, 2018 Share Posted 10 September, 2018 This place is great. I got a Dell business class machine which was over £2,000 new for £180 (I-7 with 256gb SSD) https://www.tier1online.com/3rd-gen-i5/?sort=bestselling

Never bought refurbished before, so that is a bit of a nervous point. I have heard positive stories before though.

I have heard positive stories before though. They all come with a minimum 1 year warranty which you can increase to up to three years. A 3-4 year old business class machine will be far better specced and capable than whatever you could buy new for £200.
ecuk268 Posted 11 September, 2018 Share Posted 11 September, 2018 If you get a slightly older machine, forget about Windows and go for a flavour of Linux (I use Ubuntu). All the software is free and with Libre Office you have a virtual equivalent of Microsoft Office. It supports Chrome, Firefox and Opera for web browsing and there's other software freely available for thing like photo editing, ripping CDs etc. It's also a lot less susceptible to viruses as the hackers all target Windows. Chromebooks aren't dependent on having internet connection all the time. https://support.google.com/chromebook/answer/3214688?hl=en-GB If you are a user of Google Docs, Sheets etc then i would definitely recommend. If you simply must have MS Office then probably look elsewhere.
