Well that took a bad turn then. Could have been worse, but still not ideal. Doubt we'll be seeing him until 2021.

Nightmare. He is so important to how we play and what we do, I cannot see us sustaining our heights without him. Let's hope our start has given us enough of a cushion.

4 weeks would mean missing 3 games, 6 weeks would mean missing 6 games, lets hope its 4 weeks, but think even if he's fit he will probably miss more games through squad rotation/resting  as he did last year for Chelsea and Palace away games , which didn't adversely effect us last season

The positive half of me is thinking: "Could have been a lot worse. Best possible timing given the international break. Should only miss 3 games"

The negative half of me is thinking: "Hmmm, when Saints say '4 to 6 weeks' they usually mean: 'It'll be months but we'll say 4 - 6 weeks initially to stop people panicking'. Fingers crossed he doesn't get an infection during the surgery like JRod and Sam McQueen did

Great shame but if it's 4-6 weeks then so be it, Theo can grasp the opportunity to earn a new contract. Think I read - may have been on here - his most prolific time with Arsenal was playing as more of a striker than being stuck out on the wing ?

Just hope the injury isn't one of those rolling injuries where 4-6 weeks becomes 4-6 months. Saints have got a bit of a record for underplaying injuries, Salisu for one.

If the international break had any benefit to us, it's this - and the fact he won't have missed as many games.

Lots of people grizzle gutting on here at the time of his injury, while those of us with an ounce of a brain realised he’d only miss 4-5 games

Agree. The fact that Ralph / the club have gone high-profile public with this suggests to me that we're in last-throw-of-the-dice territory. If Ings really wanted to stay then I'm pretty convinced that a deal would have been done and dusted before it got to this stage.

Putting pressure on in the media is unlikely to make him sign.

His agent must have told him he can get him another club on xxx amount more.

Dont know who out of the top clubs would take him though, could be an interesting summer again

I'm sure for Ings it is a genuinely tough decision, and I don't know what the right deciaion really is, from his perspective.

He is loved at Saints, and that must be special.

But equally, he has worked his whole life to be a professional footballer, and there is a clear limiy of what he can achieve in the game staying at Saints. A move to a big club might mean he isnt a hero, but could mean he ends his career having won a title, played and scored in the Champions League, and who is to say he couldn't become a key player for a big side?

He will certainly know what interest there is in him, which complicates matters.

I wonder from a Saints perspective what they would do if he said he didnt want to sign a new deal? From a business sense you would sell ASAP, but that would be a big downer for the club, fans and rest of the squad.

that is the only option. Sell in the summer for what we can get and move on. It'd be a shame but replace him and move on.

Doubt he would move for money, he'll have made a packet already and can smash the cheds in far away lands later on.  I do agree that he must be tempted to move to a club with a major trophy hit rate of more than 1 every 150 years.

we're due to lose another cup final in 10 years though given our history over the last 41 years.

Yep...I don't think there's any coincidence that the club have upped the stakes just before the January transfer window as that's when his value will be at his peak in his current contract cycle. Wait until the summer and we'd get significantly less I reckon. In other words, I wouldn't be overly surprised if we let him go in January to maximise the profit. Of course, the downside of that is that a replacement will be much harder to secure in January compared to the summer....

(having said all that, now cue Ings new contract accouncement next week!)

edit: actually, has he got one or two years left on his contract next summer? If two years then maybe there won't be such a differential between January and August. (I was thinking maybe he only had a year to go after next summer)

Are you stark raving bonkers? This is a local lad who loves the Saints as much as you and I, he won't be moving anywhere anytime soon. Wait and see!

The optimist in me says the reason we’re seeing these quotes regularly is because he’s the player the press are interested in. We don’t get an equivalent quote about Bertrand every week. Contract talks are progressing as normal and it’ll be announced soon.

The Saints fan in me says this doesn’t look great and unfortunately we’ll have to sell in the summer and hope for the best.

Do you think loving the saint is enough? He would know more than anyone how fragile a footballers career is. He could always by a season ticket when he retires!

He should be offered the most lucrative contract the club can afford but if he doesn't sign by the Summer the club will have to put him up for sale.  They can't afford to let him walk away for nothing at the end of next season.

Just agents doing their jobs. RH is hardly going to come out and say we are going to break the bank for him....which is exactly what will happen. Players will take the money / contract now and we will get a big fee when if he goes.

Which sides would actually want him? Can only think of Arsenal and theyre shite.

Spurs?

I've never understood this. When has he ever come out and stated he's a Saints fan? Because he certainly wasn't growing up.

People said the same about Wayne Bridge.

It wasn't that long ago we were told the likes of Shaw, Lallana, Schnderlin etc would never want to leave saints as they'd want to stay here forever and play with their mates who they'd gone through the leagues or academy with. Oh how we laughed at this fantasy world clap trap and got called trolls and WUMs if we said they were talking sh1te.

There is no loyalty in football, the sooner fans realise that the better. Being a saints fans, we should know that as much as anyone. It doesn't matter if he is from the area, if Spurs coming knocking and matched our valuation he would be off in a shot.

Luckily it is Ralph coming out in the press, if it was good old Les Reed it would mean he is off for sure.

Nonsense, Les would say we are in positive dialogue and he is comfortable with the situation.

This isn’t worrying me just yet personally, we wont ever sell in January- VVD was an exception to that.

I think in the end Saints will cave in and offer him 100k- there was article on the Athletic the other day which said teams cave in when they realise how much it costs to find a replacement.

Good point, and I can't think of one club that'd be an upgrade (or at least significant one) on us, although I could think of a few that'd probably pay him more and give first team footy...Wolves (at least whilst Jiminez is out), Villa, West Ham, Newcastle. He'd be terrific for Leeds. Bielsa's style would suit him and the fans would love him.

On balance I suspect this is brinkmanship and I reckon he'll sign.

For a relatively low fee given contract status and also given his homegrown status its not beyond the realms of possibility that Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham and City might all have some level of interest.

Possibly, but my post was in response to a post about where he'd go and be a regular starter. He'd never be a regular starter for any of those. To go to one of them it'd have to be for a bit part rule, but admittedly with European footy and more cash.

Regardless, if he wants out, we'll no doubt cash in over the summer.

He’s not a saints ‘fan’ and never has been. However, he is a local lad who, from what I understand, is enjoying life back ‘home’.

that being said, should the right opportunity (he will want to play amd won’t do what he done at Liverpool and be backup) arise for him to leave for a top 6 club, he’ll be off.

my suspicion is that he’ll go to a London club or someone commutable from Winchester.

I am sure he grew up a Saints supporter. But we did bin him off in the academy, loyalty is a two way street

Speaking in the embargoed section of the presser, Ralph was very clear on contracts for Ings and Bertrand:

- We have shown the players how much we value them and what we can offer them, within our limits

- Ball is in the court of those players to decide if they want to sign.

- If they do, great.

- If not, we will find another solution

- Later said he was still confident Ings will stay, as he knows what he has here and enjoys being the main man.
