Matthew Le God Posted 1 August, 2018 Share Posted 1 August, 2018 (edited) A MLG stadium expansion thread, oh go on then... The Football Association is considering putting England forward as a potential host for the 2030 World Cup. The last major tournament played in England was the 1996 European Championship, 30 years after the country hosted its only World Cup. FA chairman Greg Clarke says the governing body's board has agreed to start work to see if a bid is feasible. "This work will take place during the new season and no decision will be made until 2019," added Clarke. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/45035459 The 2018 World Cup bid came at a time Saints were in a financial mess, so didn't put themselves forward. If the FA go for a geographical spread as they seemed to want in 2018 then Saints could possibly be up against Bristol, Plymouth, Brighton or even an unlikely Portsmouth bid to represent the South of England outside London. Even if other home nations join in, you would need a lot of stadiums for a 48 team World Cup. Edited 1 August, 2018 by Matthew Le God
Batman Posted 1 August, 2018 Share Posted 1 August, 2018 There was (apparently) some traction for a Uruguay 2030 bid at the World Cup.
Pamplemousse Posted 1 August, 2018 Share Posted 1 August, 2018 Isn't Les Reed quite friendly with the chaps at the FA? Clearly, geographically we're the best fit but the whole of the South East will probably be sacrificed and London will get a second stadium instead. Or Milton ****ing Keynes

DuncanRG Posted 1 August, 2018 Share Posted 1 August, 2018 Not sure we'd make the cut if the home nations were involved, even for a 48-team tournament. That said we're further from London than Milton Keynes, which was in the 2018 bid, so a south coast option's hardly impossible.
ChiefScummer Posted 1 August, 2018 Share Posted 1 August, 2018 Well we've hosted internationals before. So why not eh? Would be canny nice to see noncey Westwood get the boot from St Mary's again.
Shandy_Top_89 Posted 1 August, 2018 Share Posted 1 August, 2018 Think we would be in with a shout, Russia had stadia under 40,000 capacity so might even be do-able without expansion. Very well geographically located with top transport links and one of the better training grounds in the country + a Premier League team (for the moment anyway). Imagine there may be an attempt at a ground per English region, in which case we might have to compete with Brighton. I would imagine London and Manchester will have multiple venues and Liverpool, Newcastle, Leeds and Birmingham would also be shoe ins. I also reckon you would likely see Bristol, one of Leicester/Derby/Nottingham, Sunderland and maybe Norwich if an Eastern stadium is demanded. I would prefer an England only bid for the World Cup, but only because id quite fancy a joint Celtic bid for the Euros close by (Scotland / Wales / ROI / Poss NI). I'd expect much more European demand for tickets than Russia, especially given it's going to Qatar and the States next. Would be the first World Cup in western Europe for 24 years! Crab Lungs Posted 1 August, 2018 Share Posted 1 August, 2018 Nah, far more appeal for Brighton or Plymouth I'd imagine. Bristol too. Seriously, I'd say the only thing going for us is the airport nearby and maybe the port terminal apart from that and even in spite of the redevelopments, its a pretty dour city. That, and we won't even seriously champion our cause anyway.

Turkish Posted 1 August, 2018 Share Posted 1 August, 2018 Given your previous with stadium expansion threads i'd say it's highly unlikely https://www.saintsweb.co.uk/showthread.php?58387-10-year-plan-for-St-Mary-s-stadium#.W2Ij6rpFxn0 "I expect Southampton to announce either an expansion of St Mary's or a relocation to a new stadium relatively soon." https://www.saintsweb.co.uk/showthread.php?37346-St-Mary-s-What-we-might-expect-to-see-happen-(and-possibly-announced-soon)#.W2Ik2bpFxn0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcmo2itYwew Although you did get the bit about the red felt round the pitch right. https://www.saintsweb.co.uk/showthread.php?39155-More-improvements-at-St-Mary-s-Stadium#.W2IkpLpFxn0

Pilchards Posted 1 August, 2018 Share Posted 1 August, 2018 Listened to the radio recently about an England bid for the World Cup and they said that we don’t have the stadiums for it at the moment. Regulations for a stadium to host a World Cup match is they can’t be in a residential area. Manchester UTD, Liverpool and Everton was a no go but Manchester City was good. Would Saints be classed as a residential area?

SW5 SAINT Posted 2 August, 2018 Share Posted 2 August, 2018 Usually with World Cup bids, new stadiums are built and old ones refurbished. So hopefully if previous countries histories of staging WC's is anything to go by, we could end up with some spectacular new builds and rebuilds - including SMS
aintforever Posted 2 August, 2018 Share Posted 2 August, 2018 Probably end up with Portsmouth getting a taxpayer-funded 40,000 seater stadium. We wont win it anyway because everyone hates us.

What are the FIFA regulations regarding the infrastructure of host cities?
