Is Bednarek good enough for the style of football we want to play? Is he comfortable receiving possession? Does he hit ten yard passes accurately and at pace?

We played different football when he was bought, but no he's unlikely to be the the sort of defender Hasenhuttl would buy now if he was given the choice.

The way I see it at the moment is that we are very slowly rebuilding the squad with the type of players Hasenhuttl wants. Due to our financial restraints it's going to take at least another 4 windows before we get a squad with a majority of players that fit his system.

I'm encouraged though by recent moves. We've got rid of some unwanted crap and seemingly started replacing well. I have more confidence in the way the day to day side of the club is being run now. The only way to accelerate the rebuild is with an injection of cash, which is obviously completely dependant on Gao selling the club.

The key to everything is staying up this season. Then we have more dross out of contract and the ability to start prioritising other areas as suitable players in our price range become available.

Bednarek is reasonably young still, there's not exactly a glut of great CB's in the top flight who are his age. He does a decent job for a team at our level. In an ideal world we probably would sign another more experienced CB to play with him and Salisu if Vestergaard leaves but who knows if the right player is available at a price we can afford?

I didn't even clock that Vest is already 29, I wonder if no club comes in for him if he can be convinced to sign an extension.

Depends on how long an extension. His agent will want 4 years and he's not quick at 29 Id hate to think how quick he'll be at 33.

Leicester looking at Ozan Kabak (Schalke) and Issa Diop (West Ham) (according to Leicester Mercury), doesn't sound much like they are pursuing Jannik. West Ham's interest might be ramped up if Diop goes to Leicester of course. I assume any chance of Delaney to Saints goes out the window if (when) Vest goes elsewhere.

If Vest goes we really need 2 CBs, otherwise Ralph will not be able to play 3 at the back like he was to some extent at the end of last season (whether you agree he was playing 3 at the back or whether it was only "against the ball" is irrelevant). Really think we need to bring in an experienced campaigner, our squad is so full of youngsters now, we need an old head in the defensive area (and no I don't mean Ollie Lancashire). Appreciate JWP is 26 or whatever now, but doesn't have the experience or the air of authority we need sometimes. Bertie maybe used to give us this.

Not sure we need two, we'd have A.N Other, Bednarek, Salisu, Stephens, Simeu and Lancashire (lol).

There must be other youth players getting close to first team age, not sure a club like us can afford to have 6 centrebacks in and around the first team squad vying for starts.

We're going to get stuck with him aren't we? Or sell for a heavily reduced fee either at the end of the window or in January.

Can't see a foreign team forking out £20m - we need a Prem team for that and West Ham and Leciester seem to have other (arguably better) targets.

I really rate Diop, wonder if they'd accept a swap of some kind with Vest plus a bit of cash.

Simeu is not first team (and of course neither is Lancs) so if Vest goes we have Bednarek, Stephens and Simeu. We were looking to get another CB before we knew about Vest, so getting 2 now would be no different. I know we may be looking to get someone in who can play DM and CB, and that would be fine, but if Ralph wants to have the option for 3 at the back then we do need 2 more. Perhaps we could convert Long into a CB (convert from ?).

Leicester have held talks with Southampton to sign Jannik Vestergaard as they attempt to bolster their injury-hit defence for the start of the Premier League campaign.

The Saints centre-back is among their top choices, with Wesley Fofana and Jonny Evans ruled out for the start of the season.

Brendan Rodgers previously looked at the Denmark international two seasons ago but a £25 million move could not be struck. He is expected to be available for a lower fee as he has one season left on his contract at St Mary’s, where he has been for three years after arriving from Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Fofana has a medial ligament injury to his knee which will rule him out for the rest of the year, while Evans is sidelined until at least September with a foot problem.

Leicester’s shortage of centre-backs has brought the likes of Schalke’s Ozan Kabak, on loan at Liverpool last season, and Bologna’s Takehiro Tomiyasu to the table as defenders currently on the market who could provide cover.

Vestergaard has also been on West Ham’s radar but their No1 choice for a centre-back has been Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenković and they are working torwards signing the Serbian international.

Southampton ideally want to keep Vestergaard, who has been a regular under Ralph Hasenhuttl. The 29 year-old went to the European Championship with Denmark and reached the semi-finals where they lost to England. With his contract expiring in 10 months, his club also know they risk losing him for free at the end of the campaign.

This is the beast we need

Got sent off over the weekend for a ridiculous tackle, incidentally.

Is it AFCON this year? Not ideal to potentially lose both starting CBs, Djenepo and (if Nigeria come sniffing around) Tella for 4-6 weeks.

Leicester with Bertrand & Vestergaard would have 2 of the defenders from a team they beat 9-0 😁

Funny old game, MLG.

Re: replacements, I know Salisu is highly rated but anyone we sign surely needs to be another beast in the after Vesty leaves.

Not sure Salisu will be, he's never played for Ghana and he's previously turned down the chance to play for them. He also recently said he's focused on his club career and playing for Ghana isn't a priority for him. Cant imagine he'll go unless something changes.

A £25million fee would be incredible!

The £25m fee as the article states is what he was valued at with 3 years left on his contract. He'd be cheaper now.

Let’s be frank - pre COVID most of us on the fan base me included thought Vestergaard was awful- most were a saying to get rid of him.

if we get £20 million for him do we take it  and say cheers and move on to a new player?

He had that great run with playing well & pinging beautiful passes around… but fundamentally, even when he wasn’t great, he was always our top option against a Watford / Burnley etc

however, he was our best CB last season.  He was a starter ahead of everyone else after a few games and we missed him when he was injured.

Salisu is still very uknown at this level.  Looks decent, although terrible on the ball but time will tell.

Thing about Vestergaard is he's not quick enough over a few yards. Skinned too often. Plays that lumbering role a bit deeper trying to read the game like VVD so his pace over that distance doesn't matter but VVD has that too (or did). Selling him for £20m would be amazing if we invest in a decent replacement CB. And quick. Nat or Matt...?

Yeah, saw that. Looking at the replay he was slightly unlucky because he seemed to just catch his opponent with his trailing leg and the guy made a meal of it. Think a yellow would have been enough.

Don't think Nat Phiilips is known for pace thought, rather like Vestergaard is a bit slow out of the blocks.
