stpedro Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 bravo Minty. Long live reason and down with hyperbole and the judgements of those who haven't seen anything.
OldNick Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 As I have said numerous times, Surman and James cannot play at left and right back. I feel like Alpine must have done last season with his "CB quest".StC dont start the Alpine was right about CB's lasty season nonsense. The meadical team had assured the club that Powell and Claus were fine we also had bennett and others who could play makeshift roles. We had a little money to spread about the squad and until Baird and Bale were sold. We are in a worse state than then and I feel sorry for the 2 lads asked to play out of position for us to their own personal detriment.
thefuriousb Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 Please please don't change it jan, don't listen to the negative people who don't like watching football just like looking at the table, today was fun, well done jan. I'd agree with the sentiment. Though enjoyable perhaps, rather then "fun"?
Micky Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 what are you on about? where the hell have I had a pop at the new guys? dont start judging my view on what you think i think? ALL i am saying is that this board should be for all opinions..regardless if you like it or not.. DIdnt say that you had taken a pop at the new management. But your quite willing to allow Alpines view to stand - who has a backhanded pop at the new team - after only two games. Quite willing to back him up by bringing up the old Burley argument - which again is still neither black nor white. Agreed the board is for opinions - if you don't want to get involved in AS's, (or other peoples for that matter) then refrain from supportive comments, quoting my or other users posts.

I wasn't saying he was right, I was pointing out that everyone told said Makin could "do a job" at CB, when in fact he was sh*t. People are saying Surman and James can do a job at side back this year - when in actual fact they are sh*t. They have no pace whatsoever.

Saint_clark Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 I'd agree with the sentiment. Though enjoyable perhaps, rather then "fun"? I agree mostly, but seriously you couldn't have enjoyed watching James and Surman getting outrun every attack?
Wade Garrett Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 Can people use the ignore function, rather than bore the tits off me by slagging off 'armchair alpine'. Cheers.
Whitey Grandad Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 I was sat with an ex saint today and they agreed with me and most one here that the first half we played reasonably well. But during the game he was picking out things about our team that Birmingham would sort out in the second half and they did! He says the lads need to grow up very quickly and get to grips with the physical side of things quick. He also mentioned looking at the squad in the programme it is very slim. Out defense who have an avergae age of about 33 (now davies has gone!!) You only need them to pick up an injury and we will then have a couple of 18yrs old there. The one up front tactic is pointless, like today young David was up there ready to cross the ball in and he was the most forward player! Yes there is a long way to go, but me personally am not looking for great things this season That's the most accurate assessment that I've seen so far.
saintkiptanui Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 I agree mostly, but seriously you couldn't have enjoyed watching James and Surman getting outrun every attack?no but I enjoyed seeing saints pass and run, move into space and look like scoring goals in the first half, last season I hated every minute of it and found myself leaving earlier and earlier.
Saint_clark Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 Lallana is far too lightweight also - however he won't come up against a better DM in Lee Carsley.
OldNick Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 I wasn't saying he was right, I was pointing out that everyone told said Makin could "do a job" at CB, when in fact he was sh*t. People are saying Surman and James can do a job at side back this year - when in actual fact they are sh*t. They have no pace whatsoever. Im dont doubt that about the pace but they still deserve our support and they did ok .Brums winger had tremendous pace and James did get caught out a few times but it is a difficult role hes playing
Micky Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 you puzzle me Possibly not that difficult to do....!!!
saintkiptanui Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 That's the most accurate assessment that I've seen so far.Rubbish, we could of had 4/5 goals before they scored, we opened them up and the crossing was excellent, I'm getting all frustrsted now, someone must of thought we played well?
Saint_clark Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 Im dont doubt that about the pace but they still deserve our support and they did ok .Brums winger had tremendous pace and James did get caught out a few times but it is a difficult role hes playing A lot of teams in this league play pacy wingers - we can't just shrug it off. James and Surman are midfielders; when Burley did this, he was absolutely ripped to pieces by people on here.
OldNick Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 no but I enjoyed seeing saints pass and run, move into space and look like scoring goals in the first half, last season I hated every minute of it and found myself leaving earlier and earlier. IMO You are right Santkip. The team if it starts to pick up results will give us a real sense of pride in a team that is more like the Spirit of Southampton
Saint_clark Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 Rubbish, we could of had 4/5 goals before they scored, we opened them up and the crossing was excellent, I'm getting all frustrsted now, someone must of thought we played well? I thought we played brilliantly, i'm just f*cking annoyed about the whole Surman/James thing.
saintkiptanui Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 Lallana is far too lightweight also - however he won't come up against a better DM in Lee Carsley. AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH first half he tore them apart, FFS FFS FFS ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh the kids absolute quality.
Bourno Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 Entertaining game, but seriously lacked some experience in the 2nd half. I really do fear for this season. If we have a few injuries we will be in big trouble, you only had to look at our bench today to see the lack of options available.
Saint Billy Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 Based on money spent, the players sold, the people in charge and despite the pretty football and the encouraging first two losses of the season, I fear that Alpines views long term hold more relevance to how this season pans out than those that attended today. Sorry guys.
OldNick Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 A lot of teams in this league play pacy wingers - we can't just shrug it off. James and Surman are midfielders; when Burley did this, he was absolutely ripped to pieces by people on here. As you know I wasnt one of them. We are potless and so I cant see how we can change what we have. Rudi at left back? Perry at right back and thomas in the centre perhaps. Then where do you play Drew? I would have had Euell on the bench to give cover seciond half for either midfield or forward.
Saint Bri Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 Yep, but we dont have the players to do that anymore, and I wonder if JP is up to changing things about. Two games in and I haven't got a clue if he has. I'd be surprised if anyone has. I think the best thing is to wait and see and start making judgements 10-15 games in to get a measure of the man. All I know so far is that I've watched some very entertaining football so far and unlike some of my Chelski supporting friends from last season, I'd rather watch us progress playing pretty football and losing the odd one or two (which is to be expected with a new team in this league) than win ugly 1-0. I think good football is one of the main principles our club is built on isn't it?
thefuriousb Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 I agree mostly, but seriously you couldn't have enjoyed watching James and Surman getting outrun every attack? I didn't enjoy the result either, so I didn't enjoy every single incident/moment. Overall though the performance was "enjoyable".
derry Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 no but I enjoyed seeing saints pass and run, move into space and look like scoring goals in the first half, last season I hated every minute of it and found myself leaving earlier and earlier. I stayed until the end and saw every crappy minute. Wasn't today brilliant? I thought that Birmingham would outplay Saints and probably win by 2/3 goals. In the event we outplayed them in the first half and weren't outplayed in the second half and lost to two scrappy goals.
Saint_clark Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH first half he tore them apart, FFS FFS FFS ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh the kids absolute quality. LOL I agree, but you can't deny that he lost out at the slightest nudge. As I also said, i'll give him more time as Lee Carsley is the best DM in the league and Lallana won't get a harder challenge. (Had to laugh at some old bloke behind me who kept calling him Rhianna).
Saint_clark Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 As you know I wasnt one of them. We are potless and so I cant see how we can change what we have. Rudi at left back? Perry at right back and thomas in the centre perhaps. Then where do you play Drew? I would have had Euell on the bench to give cover seciond half for either midfield or forward. I would play Skacel at LB and Thomas at RB. Both have played there before and both looked very solid.
Northant Saint Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 A bit tough to do that when you've given away two of your best strikers..... Why can't you please give the team a chance for once. I've never despised an anonymous person as much as you before...
Alan56 Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 More supposition being thrown around as fact. If you think we're in freefall, fine, but stop trying to drag others into it claiming that anyone who disagrees with you is wrong. Just go back through this thread and read the opinions of those who went today. I've never seen such reports after a defeat, so I'll be damned if someone wants to try and tell me I'm deluded, just because I have some belief. Get some respect for other peoples opinions. People earn respect they do not command it!! I went today and saw a team bereft of skill, guile, leadership and fitness. We got what we deserved!!
SNSUN Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 I predicted two defeats at the start of this season and so far it seems we're playing well but not getting the points. Bring on a few easy teams that we can spank, and let's see where we are at Christmas.
Snowballs2 Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 DIdnt say that you had taken a pop at the new management. I am glad that you realise that this board is for Opinions, Alpine expressed his. Since when has it been a crime to state the obvious, we will do well to escape relegation this season. You must also realise that things will get worse financially after 3 groups of failed directors. That you cannot expect a half decent season with the team we are putting out. You may not like to hear the truth..but..people will not continue to pay good money to see results like we have had so far.
ALWAYS_SFC Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 Fantastic first half and should have had a 2 or 3 goal lead but 2nd half we lost our way and they sussed us out and stopped us playing and we had no idea how to change it.
Block 5 Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 Well I'm not worried yet. First half performance was sublime at times. Without doubt we have great potential. Our weakness (again) is at the back, and this MUST be addressed, otherwise everything else will be pointless.
Saint Bri Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 Why can't you please give the team a chance for once. I've never despised an anonymous person as much as you before... No need to despise, everybody's entitled to their opinion. Even if it's incredibly negative. But then one man's negativity is another's bleak sense of realism
OldNick Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 People earn respect they do not command it!! I went today and saw a team bereft of skill, guile, leadership and fitness. We got what we deserved!!you went ot a different ground than I did.I understand some Alpines rants but yours is the most misplaced I have seen on here. The guile, skill, leadership and fitness was there just you seem not to have been.
Snowballs2 Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 IMO You are right Santkip. The team if it starts to pick up results will give us a real sense of pride in a team that is more like the Spirit of Southampton And if it does not ? What then ?
thefuriousb Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 I went today and saw a team bereft of skill, guile, leadership and fitness. We got what we deserved!! Seriously? No...I mean, seriously?! How did your dog think we played?
derry Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 I think maybe before Lloyd James is slaughtered a little bit of balance should be considered. On the left Holmes worked his socks off to help Surman defend, on the right James hardly ever got any help from McGoldrick, who was well forward, therefore was trying to hold probably the fastest player in the CCC and his support on his own.
exit2 Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 I was sat with an ex saint today and they agreed with me and most one here that the first half we played reasonably well. I agree, and thats the difference between us as fans and pros who know the game. But the part about BCFC picking up what we were doing should have been counteracted
saintkiptanui Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 Seriously? No...I mean, seriously?! How did your dog think we played?why did you have to qoute that comment I hadn't seen it. To suggest we had no skill is ahhhh f*ck it. GOOKS!!
Snowballs2 Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 Well I'm not worried yet. First half performance was sublime at times. Without doubt we have great potential. Our weakness (again) is at the back, and this MUST be addressed, otherwise everything else will be pointless. As Nickh will tell you we could not pay for a decent defender on loan in brass washers.
OldNick Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 And if it does not ? What then ? We go down, but I watched a lot of the game feeling it was what I wish to see when I pay for my ticket. Brum are a strong side and a good test,I suspect they will be delighted to have got away with 3 points because I believe a draw would have been a fair result and if our experienced forward had put away the header we would be thrilled tonight. When he missed that chance I turned to my daughter ans sadi that miss would cost us and I think the team realised it as well.
Saint Billy Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 you went ot a different ground than I did.I understand some Alpines rants but yours is the most misplaced I have seen on here. The guile, skill, leadership and fitness was there just you seem not to have been. So now you are even shouting down the viewpoints of people who did go.
Saint Charlie Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 I thought James and Surman did really well. As JP said, the full backs get lots of the ball and both used it well, especially in the first half. As for Lallana being lightweight, it hardly matters because he always beats the defender with skill, he is going to be a superb player! Birmingham's subs wages ar probably more than our entire squad, to bring players like that off the bench is not normal for this league and they just pumped the ball up to their big guys as they will do all season. Some of our interplay was a joy to watch, and I watch football to be entertained. After seeing today the doubters will have egg on their faces in a short while, and once this extremely hard start to the season is concluded.
OldNick Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 So now you are even shouting down the viewpoints of people who did go.so do you agree with that codswallop. To say that Killer shows no leadership, there was no skill or guile is rubbish.Im surprised anyone would back him up. I dont mind constructive criticism but outright nonsense is a different matter
Micky Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 I am glad that you realise that this board is for Opinions, Alpine expressed his. That you cannot expect a half decent season with the team we are putting out. You may not like to hear the truth..but..people will not continue to pay good money to see results like we have had so far. The point is - this is not obvious. At least it would appear not to be obvious to 90 per cent of the posters here who actually saw the game today. I personally could not give a FF about the directors at all - if we get it right on the pitch, the rest of the club will look after itself. (partial indirect quote from Jason Dodd) As for truth, are you implying that all of the poster on here that have so far said that we did ok today, are in fact, lying. If this is the case then perhaps you could enlighten me as to the truth, what really happened today - or weren't you there?
Whitey Grandad Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 Rubbish, we could of had 4/5 goals before they scored, we opened them up and the crossing was excellent, I'm getting all frustrsted now, someone must of thought we played well? Let's not kid ourselves that we were unlucky not to get a draw, or that Birmingham only beat us because of two scrappy goals. We ought to have scored another goal in the first half. There two good cutbacks from McGoldrick that Holmes should have connected with, Gillett(?) had a shot cleared off the line and John had an offside goal, but after 20 minutes Birmingham began to carve us open and also had a fluffed cutback and an offside goal. In the second half all that we had was the Stern John chance whereas Kelvin had a good one-on-one save and Birmingham had an offside goal and two real ones. At times we were being steamrollered. Bent & Jerome were pulling us all over the place. It was a classic case of men against boys and it was very depressing. Worst of all was that neither the management nor the players seemed to know what to do next and there are no real alternatives on the bench or in the treatment room.
saintkiptanui Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 It's not often I agree with nick but he is right, if people thought we were bad today then what did they make of us last season?

Thedelldays Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 It's not often I agree with nick but he is right, if people thought we were bad today then what did they make of us last season? shockingly...no, DISTURBINGLY so many thought we were good and unlucky most of the time last season...
Saint Curtis Posted 16 August, 2008 Posted 16 August, 2008 I thought the first half was superb, we could have been a couple of goals up at half time, a couple of negatives from my point of view - Full backs, we are not going to compete with many teams if we continue to play midfielders in this position, they were caught out many times which was in my opinion birmingham's only way through. I believe Surman would offer a lot more than Holmes does down the left if we could find a decent left back. We lacked experience on the bench today, why can't euell or skacel be sat on the bench if they are still on the books? Surely it would be better to have them there than no options at all. Overall I thought Gillett and svensson were excellent, i'm very tempted to go to derby on the first half performance alone.
