SuperSAINT Posted 3 July, 2018 Share Posted 3 July, 2018 If we buy any CB from Barca it should be Mina, not Marlon. He certainly knows how to keep Sterling in his pocket! A beast of a defender, tall, positionally astute, a good reader of the game and header of the ball in both penalty areas and takes no prisoners. Oh, and can shrug off a groin injury. What's not to like? Linked with Liverpool.
Lighthouse Posted 3 July, 2018 Share Posted 3 July, 2018 Ill informed opinion based on nothing but gut instinct and cliches but... I’d take the brick sh*t house Viking, with a face which looks like it’s been heading breeze blocks back over the halfway line, every time they come into the box. Nothing about this player screams ‘grabbing a game by the b*llocks’ to me and Gibson just reminds me of Stephens under Puel. Over rated because he’s an English academy prospect and flattered by a team with little interest in attacking.

tajjuk Posted 4 July, 2018 Share Posted 4 July, 2018 From what I have read about Vestergard, he can play, seen several reports about his range of passing, and is decently quick as well despite his size. So seems the much better all round option.
S-Clarke Posted 4 July, 2018 Share Posted 4 July, 2018 Vestergard is really highly rated over in Germany, a pretty decent standard of league as well. He has a stature similar to VVD and he's a good footballer. If you read up in some articles they say he did start out as a midfielder, but centre back became his home - so that kind of suggests he can play a bit too. I think we should be all over this one as opposed to Marlon.
mattyd Posted 4 July, 2018 Share Posted 4 July, 2018 Do you really think saints will run with 6 senior CBs? How many games do you think the 6th choice of those CBs will actually play? If we signed Marlon and Vestergaard, I would be very surprised if another CB didn’t go out. In the event of all three first choice CBs being out, Bertrand can just cover. For example, if Stephens is 6th choice and is on the rumoured £50k, than that is a huge waste of money? Stephens can go as far as I can see. Never Premier League standard. Also I think Hoedt is not up to it.

Jack's future is looking uncertain either way and could be on his way out and I'd also sell Targett to Fulham to help fund Vestegard, if that's neccessary (I prefer McQueen as Bertrand's competition). Can't see them selling or loaning Bednarak whose value will be on the rise, nor Hoedt or seemingly Maya.

derry Posted 4 July, 2018 Share Posted 4 July, 2018 I'm hearing both Vestergard and Marlon Santos, also looking at Ings. I'm not convinced that this is likely as it would leave us top heavy at centre back. Ings also a bit of a gamble due injury and how he would fit in or be better than the present forwards. Dusic Posted 4 July, 2018 Share Posted 4 July, 2018 None of Hoedt, Yoshida, Bednarek or Stephens will be happy not playing so will be interesting to see what the plan is. Also need a back up RB/RWB, could Stephens possibly do that, or does it really need a specialist? As an aside, if only the likes of Targett and McQueen (and many other full backs) weren't so one footed they would have a far greater chance of playing regularly. Saint Jude Posted 5 July, 2018 Share Posted 5 July, 2018 Is he better than Jack Stephens? Jack pulled a lot of shirts last year... not sure he’ll know how to defend if VAR is checking for them. saint lard Posted 15 July, 2018 Share Posted 15 July, 2018 The English side of Southampton has signed the Danish center Jannik Vestergaard, coming from Borussia Monchengladbach, a related addition Barca key because the English team has practically done with Marlon Santos. For the Danish have paid 20 million euros while the Brazilian Barca the figure could be around 12 million euros. A transfer, Marlon, a few days ago seemed almost done but is being delayed and will have to see if it ends up formalizing and in what conditions. Recently, West Ham also showed their interest in the former player of Fluminense, who has a contract in force with FC Barcelona until June 30, 2020. Although in the case of the team that Manuel Pellegrini will train, it transcended that flirting, there was no proposal specific to Barca regarding Marlon, although it was rumored that he was willing to pay around 15 million euros. https://www.mundodeportivo.com/futbol/fc-barcelona/20180715/45919191019/fc-barcelona-barca-marlon-southampton.html?facet=amp&__twitter_impression=true Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

benjii Posted 18 July, 2018 Share Posted 18 July, 2018 Wouldn't expect us to sign another centre back unless we sell one / loan one out. Assuming Vestergaard starts then at least one of Yoshida, Hoedt and Bednarek is likely on the bench. Plus we have Stephens. I can't see us spending money on fees and wages for another one to join the list. Obviously if Yoshida wants to go to China or Qatar or whatever then the position changes slightly. hypochondriac Posted 18 July, 2018 Share Posted 18 July, 2018 We had similar things like this in previous windows. It's clear we wanted one cb, we kept our options open and then got the one we want. My guess is we will sign an attacker and that will be it for this window after offloading boufal.
