Toussaint Posted 20 November, 2018 Share Posted 20 November, 2018 Just played a big part in Scotland's equaliser against Israel. Not the most refined player but on a couple of occassions so far he has created something out of nothing for the Jocks simply by running past an opponent instead of passing sideways. Definitely has a burst of pace and a little bit of power. Hope he gets a run in our side as he offers something different, albeit will never be a really cultured, technical player. Not too worried about the cultured technical stuff, we have enough fair weather show ponies in the squad, I agree he needs a good run in the side. the saint in winchester Posted 21 November, 2018 Share Posted 21 November, 2018 From BBC report on Scotland game ... sounds like we need to get the best out of Armstrong .... and can we get a bid in for James Forrest??!! Celtic's Forrest has the Midas touch right now. Everything he touches turns to goals. Twelve in his past 11 games for club and country is an astonishing statistic for a winger. His composure for all three goals spoke volumes of his burgeoning self-confidence.It was Stuart Armstrong, though, who dragged Scotland up by their bootlaces as the good feeling built up in Saturday's 4-0 win over Albania threatened to drain away with the Hampden rain. Following a first quarter dominated by the Israelis, the Southampton midfielder drove the hosts forward. His first foray almost brought a goal for Callum McGregor - a good hand from Ariel Harush denying him. But shortly afterwards Armstrong burst into the box again. His shot was charged down but fell kindly for Forrest, who lashed it low beyond the keeper to begin the turnaround.

That shows he has the right attitude, mentality and work ethic, despite not playing a lot of club games recently. Those the things missing from our team in many games! Saint Billy Posted 21 November, 2018 Share Posted 21 November, 2018 Was impressed with Armstrong but it was only Israel after all, but he should be given a longer run in the saints first team.
Dusic Posted 21 November, 2018 Share Posted 21 November, 2018 Out of interest anyone know what formation Scotland played and what position they played Armstrong in?4-3-3 He and Forrest were in the 3 either side of a more conservative player. He had freedom to get forward when needed but wasnt playing just off the striker by any means. Basically a box to box central midfielder.

So he could play in a 4-4-2 then if Hughes still insists on going there. Still think he'd be better behind the striker like Davis used to play. In Pre season I thought Armstrong looked our most promising of the new signings bit disappointing he hasn't really got going for us yet.

I don't think he can see the wood for trees.
eurosaint Posted 25 November, 2018 Share Posted 25 November, 2018 Have watched him recently playing for Scotland and he is an intelligent footballer with a key role to play for Saints IMHO ! Not dynamic but has good vision, an eye for a killer pass and not afraid to shoot, as witnessed in yesterday's match ! I'm guessing that his two goals at least means he will start the next game and hopefully get a run in the team which can only be of benefit to him ! One of the few positives from yesterday, so we live in hope !!

Did well when he came on yesterday. We're not exactly strong in central midfield. Of course he could go to Scotland but this sounds like someone trying to make up a story. pimpin4rizeal Posted 19 August, 2019 Share Posted 19 August, 2019 Thought he made a big impact on Saturday that coincided with our late flourish,, was closing down and winning ball back and plenty of energy.. actually think he could be a proper player for us, but it’s hard to see him getting much time with jwp and hojbjerg being two of Ralph’s favourites

Forester Posted 19 August, 2019 Share Posted 19 August, 2019 Not totally convinced by him yet, but seen some good moments from him including Saturday. He is, along with others, paying the price for our defence being so weak that we have to play three centre backs. Otherwise he would be a good fit for Ralph’s preferred 4-2-2-
SNSUN Posted 19 August, 2019 Share Posted 19 August, 2019 He'll get game time this season, loaning him out would weaken the squad, even though it's unlikely he'll be a first team starter on a regular basis. Needs to play against Fulham really.

Useful Idiot Posted 19 August, 2019 Share Posted 19 August, 2019 I don't really rate him as an attacking midfielder who plays from the left wing, he tends to cut back inside too early and run into traffic. He looked pretty decent in a central midfield role, though. Albeit against a tired dipper midfield.
macca155 Posted 19 August, 2019 Share Posted 19 August, 2019 I thought he made quite an impact when he came on Saturday. Yes Liverpool were tiring but he pushed Robertson back and he was their danger man (along with 8 others). Defo worth a run in the team
