Part of the Democrats problem is for the last decade they have been losing governor and senatorial races which means the bench of candidates to pick from (who have the electoral background to be taken seriously) has been rather thin, and those that did put themselves forward seem to fall in to a hole marked "republican stereotypes of a democrat" all by themselves without needing to be pushed. Biden won as he was simply the most credible, person with some experience that did not voluntarily paint themselves in to a stupid corner. I would not have chosen him, as a permanent resident i get to suffer without having any influence, but I still have an opinion. But the choices available although wide was not very deep. They needed a boring, middle of the country senator or governor with a bit of name recognition, Klobucher came closest to that, but she choose loyalty over ambition. So by default it went to Biden.

My concern going forward is that in the future an effective autocrat will follow the road map Trump laid to take power and use the office for much worse outcomes. The things which stopped Trump were courts, which in this system can be fixed using the political system given enough time and his laziness and lack of imagination. If someone who really wanted to use the levers available came along, enough people in the right places can be assembled to let them do it.

Former campaign manager hospitalised for own safety

This story epitomizes what working for Trump has done to people, where he warps reality around people and casts them off, sucked dry when they are no longer useful to him. I feel sorry for this guy, and his family. Pushed into a position he was probably not really prepared for, being asked to work miracles and then ending up like this. If everyone who worked for you gets tossed out and deemed a loser, then maybe the judgement of the person doing the picking in the first place is the problem, if he only can select people he later thinks are losers. Or alternatively it's just a big pile of BS.

Getting middle Eastern countries to recognise Israel is pretty positive and likely to lead to more peace. Agreed?

I agree it is positive.

There is already peace between the UAE and Bahrain and Israel, however. It is not a peace deal. It’s a trade deal and diplomacy deal which reflects the reality that has existed for some time. If Trump fixes the Syrian civil war or the Yemeni civil war (both very real wars with very real human tragedies) then you can credit him with a peace deal in the Middle East.

No doubt Trump’s half-wit base from Buttfuck Oklahoma think he has ended an actual war or something. That’s if the divs have any comprehension at all of what any of the words mean.

Call it what you want but it's still positive (and will hopefully lead to others.) I think you're missing my point somewhat by picking up on semantics of one minor point in my post. It's true to say that the trump regime has done some positive things that I would agree with.

Have just seen the highlights of the debate last night. Biden is clearly the lesser of two evils (imo, of course), but good grief, is this really the best America has to offer? Felt like two senile old men squabbling with each other throughout. How difficult is it for Trumps opponents to just stay cool and let him implode by himself?

Surely they realise the rest of the world is laughing (nervously) at them..?

That's what happened in 2016.

I'm glad Biden attacked back, otherwise it was turning into another Trump rally with a lot of talking bollocks. Biden came across as the tired angry grandad trying to scold a petulant (fat, orange) schoolboy. He also addressed the camera directly quite a bit, which was good. Round One to him, but only just. "Stand by"

Encouraging an openly far right violent group to stand by - apparently he mis-spoke just like he did about injecting bleach - and mixing up Antifa as a political organisation when the FBI Director cites it as an ideology. Fuck me Trump is thick as mince. Biden has limitations but safe pair of hands for four years whilst America sorts its shit out and destroys the far right online. Would bring politics in this country to a better place as well.

He also called one of the founders of these "proud boys" a "very good person".....i.e. he was one of the tiki rioters a while back. I hope he loses as the tories would be utterly stuffed without him.

Totally agree but I also worry that Trump is going to get another Supreme Court Judge elected before the election who is white, an evangelical Catholic aged 48 with 7 kids. The doctine of separation of powers is really important in the United States since Marbury v Madison so stacking that court with right wing judges removes one of the most important consitutional checks and balances against Presidential abuse of power (if Trump is re-elected)..

Were they both asked if they would tell the far left rioters who are blocking many roads all over the US in the name of BLM, to stand down also? You know the ones; the nes attacking elderly and ladies for wanting to drive down a road. Any mention of that at all? Are they going to be allowed to continue?

To be fair, I think killings by far-right nutters outweigh those by anti-facists by about 300-1 or something silly. Any President of the US should condemn both, it's not an either/or thing.

Go on, indulge me with the reasoning behind your assertion. Explain how the Tories with probably another four years until the next election and a stoking majority, will be "stuffed" if there is a change of party elected in the USA

What a surprise, QAnon joins the thread. Whilst I don’t condone some of the more violent elements of BLM the looting etc if a succession of governments had dealt with State police forces so that a series of appalling and fatal mistreatments of suspects who were black stopped happening. Given that every other influencing mechanism had failed, it left few options.

The George Floyd video sickened me to my core and it wasn’t an isolated incident. It’s pathetic that the leader of the Free World is promoting far right groups and setting up to not accept fair results of elections either. For the record, there are some aspects of BLM (again, it is a movement, not a party so it will have right if centre activists as well who believe in social justice) I disagree with and this idea of defunding any services from the far left or right is as moronic as saying the Coronavirus is a conspiracy on Facebook.

You are right, it happened to a white guy a year before, but went unotied. Bottom line, you like so many others are a massive hypocrite and are happy when your loony left go rampaging, but not when others do it. Thanks for admitting it so openly.

Yes it was condemned by the Democrats where it descended into violence and looting of property (never acceptable) and by the victims families themselves with 30 seconds research.

Both Presidential candidates are shockingly poor, Trump for being a buffoon and Biden for being senile and corrupt. It is a mystery how those two got to the top of the pile.

As to the events in the USA which culminated in the formation of the BLM Marxist movement there and over here, the result has been the tearing down of statues, mobs breaking social isolation measures, the ridiculous scenes of police and footballers "giving the knee," schools having to discuss it in lessons on diversity when a large percentage of pupils are behind in their education because of the Chinese virus, and now some post office letter boxes being painted black as part of Black History month.

Will we also be having History months for other ethnic groups celebrating their historical contribution to our history?  Will there be a Police Lives Matter organisation formed following the murder of Sergeant Matiu Ratana in Croydon recently? Will it be equally acceptable to the BBC if a white comedian said kill blackie, or is it the case that only whites can be racist?

At some stage, there is going to be a backlash against all this woke, virtue signalling by the SJW's in the media. People are getting mighty fed up with it.

Being a bit ageist there,  aren't you?

Things like the BLM pantomime, the woke agenda from SJWs is a minor annoyance. It doesn't affect me beyond that and it will pass when the lefties embark onto their next woke crusade. And as I say, the chief culprits responsible for it, like the BBC, will get their comeuppance. That's already underway at the moment.

What's funny as fuck is imagining how wound up people like you must be at the current situation. A couple of GEs lost, the referendum lost, a huge Conservative Party majority; you must feel so helpless at your complete inability to change anything every day.

It couldn't be going better. I don't think anybody could have predicted just how incompetent, disorganised and authoritarian Johnson, Cummings and co would be. The hash they are making of COVID is undermining their credibility on Brexit, such as it. Some people in the City are already betting that Johnson will be gone by Christmas. 12 months from glorious victor to discredited car crash. That's got to be some kind of record.

LOL, I didn't lose the referendum and I always lose the GE because I don't support either of the major parties and our political system is outdated so the sitiuation is just normal for me.

Woke means to be alert to injustice in society, especially racism, the fact that you use it as some sort of derogatory term says it all.

When it comes to credibility about Brexit, I expect that you have as much idea about current events as you did about predicting that we would go for the Norway option. 🤣

I think that you'll find that the majority of the electorate are split in their views on current events along political party lines and referendum voting lines. I suspect that regarding the Chinese virus, most wouldn't think that Labour would do things any better. Some people in the City believe that Boris will serve out his term and maybe even win the next election. Speaking of people placing bets that he will be gone by Christmas, would you like to put £50 towards a charity on it? Oh, I forgot, you don't honour your bets, do you?

Careful!  You'll get him so worked up he'll post links to another poll where they ask the same question to the same small sample of people over and over again and claim that as the majority of opinion when they give the same answer every time!

Every post you make the same comment with the same emoji. It's all you have four years on. I based my Norway opinion on what Johnson, Gove, Fox and Davis were saying about no tariffs, delays at the border and the easiest deal in history. I believed them but it turns out they were lying. These are the people you fanboy. .

Read again; I said people like you. A bit unwoke of you to use the insult "gammon" against older people who were included in the majority of those among the electorate voting to leave the EU , isn't it? Or isn't treating the elderly with contempt considered to be a societal injustice? Perhaps that doesn't apply to elderly white people, eh?

Regarding the contempt that the political right are beginning to show towards this term "woke", it's similar to political correctness before and only falls into contempt because it is taken to extreme and ridiculous levels. And of course, it isn't as if the left don't have their own insults that they hurl towards those they despise on the right, is it? Gammon?

The electoral maths for Trump gets harder by the day. He is trailing in 11 of the 14 battleground/swing states; tied in one (Iowa - which Trump won by 9.5% in 2016) and only leading in Texas (!) by 3.2% - A State he won in 2016 by nearly 10%. If Biden wins Pennsylvania or Florida (he is currently leading in the polls in both) he only needs to pick up one or two of the likes of Arizona, Michigan, Wisconsin etc. in all cases Biden is a fair margin ahead at the stage of the contest.

Trump needs Biden to absolutely crash and burn in the next two debates (and I mean have some sort of episode or forget where he is etc); Biden to die or a scandal (that would surely have come out by now) regarding either Biden or Harris. My impression is that a lot of Americans are simply tired of the chaos. I have a couple of friends who live over in the States and one who voted Trump (he simply couldn't stand Hilary). He said to me 3 months ago - "Now that we know Biden is the Dems nominee, a lot of people who would have struggled to vote for Sanders or someone like that will happily vote for Joe. We know what we are getting, he's a nice guy!"

Biden certainly has flaws, but compared to Trump its like comparing chalk and cheese

I hope that's true and think it probably is. However there is an known effect whereby people often don't want to admit to pollsters that they hold unpopular views. Trump is so widely ridiculed I wonder how many people intending to vote for Trump are instead claiming they don't know or will vote for Biden.

The irony is that the electoral college system was set up to avoid a simple majority vote delivering an 'unfit' person becoming President. Last time it worked against the majority of voters and gave us Trump instead.

The polls are similar in those key states as they were in the run up to the 2016 election, with respect to the number Biden is ahead of Trump by. The difference this time is that he polls closer to the 50% mark than Clinton did, which leaves a smaller pool of undecided voters for Trump to take from. Of undecided voters 4 years ago, Trump took a whopping 60% (with 20% going each to Clinton and third candidate) People are more cemented in their choices this time it appears.

Don't think they would have saved themselves that much money....

I really wouldn't put it past him for this to be yet another lie and a scam to try to save his election prospects.

Whilst pretending to be infected, he carries on tweeting to demonstrate his strength, avoids the next debate with stricter rules, makes a miracle rapid recovery and tells his supporters Covid is nothing to worry about and a hoax.

But if he really has got it, although I am normally a caring and compassionate individual, I hope it will be as serious as possible.
