It's a shame it looks so drastic, but this is due to how long it has been allowed to continue. No doubt there will be hysteria over the move. But if he stays the course, the rebalancing will show the strength of our special ally and the use of the popular mandate Trump has. Whats the difference between The United States imposing tariffs on the rest of the world, & the EU imposing them on the rest of the world? What Trump has done is nothing to do with 'reciprocal' tariffs. He has looked at trade imbalances and come up with a second grade formula to try to eradicate them. Not for one moment has any actual thought gone into working out how the trading relationships are structured or have come about, hence the lunacy of the Falklands and Lesotho situations, let alone the penguins on Heard and MacDonald Islands. He is totally financially illiterate. 4

Poor attempt at a strawman but it's not that black and white though (which I'm sure you already know). Even your most rabid free marketeer would recognise that tariffs can be useful and should be used in certain situations. Question is the extent and application of them rather than whether tariffs are inherently "good" or "bad".

Whats the difference between The United States imposing tariffs on the rest of the world, & the EU imposing them on the rest of the world? The EU ones tend to be focused and can at least be explained by economic theory. They are also discussed openly in advance, in public debates, and would usually be applied with a decent lead time to allow business to adjust. Contrast with the US announcement with hardly any implementation period, based on obvious lies about the justification, and no evidence of cogent economic thought. 4

spyinthesky Posted Friday at 18:18 Posted Friday at 18:18 Interesting to note that Trump used to complain that Obama took occasional time off to play golf. Trump seems to have forgotten that now and seems to fly from Washington to Florida to play golf most weekends, at considerable financial cost to the US tax payer, when the expenses of security, aero fuel etc etc are taken into account. Good old Donnie is en route for another game of golf as we speak. 2
