Another brave, bold policy decision to do the right thing for his country, and his people. Favouring them over decades of financial institutions, companies and countries greedily unbalancing trade for their own benefits.

It's a shame it looks so drastic, but this is due to how long it has been allowed to continue. No doubt there will be hysteria over the move. But if he stays the course, the rebalancing will show the strength of our special ally and the use of the popular mandate Trump has. His party has to remain strong, and not cave into short term concerns.

- Liz Truss

That’s akin to Katie Price commending someone’s standard of driving a car.

I look forward to seeing how the production of diamonds, currently mined in and imported from Lesotho, is transferred to the US.

That’s even more of a stick up than Ukraine and minerals.

Does anyone truly believe did this coz he is thick? Seriously?

Do you have brains at all? He has expert advisors. He knows exactly what he is doing. It is not for your investment or pension, it is for him, his cronies, his owners and for Thier futures to grab more money and power from you yet again.

But no, his is a moron. An orange baby. Stop playing identity politics and favourites and wake up. You are all being played, so much so that you have fun talking about it whiles your future is being taken away from you. Dopey or what.

Name one person who has brought identity politics into the tariff discussion?  Never happened.  Dopey or what?

Err, all of you dopey. You dislike trump so much that you don't care what he does, it is all bad no matter what and he is thick no matter what. This is exactly why he does what he does. He knows the idiots on forums will be too busy calling him names and try to out clever each other with pretend knowledge, too busy to stop and think why he is really doing these things. Stop hitting at the person. Stop, engage brain, see what they are doing and stop it.

So he does things to annoy "idiots on forums"? Seems like a shit way to run a country.

Liz Truss or Guided "Shit for Brains" Missile?

Ironically, Johnny might derive some indirect benefit from the tariffs as a lot of chemical supply comes from China and India who have been taxed more aggressively, so the market for pesticides might be easier over there.

I know you are a laughably tragic trump fanboy but surely even you can see how utterly stupid it all is, I mean, who in their right mind puts tariffs on an island inhabited by only Penguins. :poundit:

Latest bit of Trump 'magic'
Laura Loomer, that well known conspiracy theorist who actually has the honour of being accused of 'being off the scale' by Marjorie Taylor-Greene, dropped in for a fireside chat with her orange hued hero a couple of days back.
She came bearing gifts ie a list of people within the Defence Dept she considered were not toeing the Trump line.
As a consequence six National Security Officers were given the heave ho.
Heaven help us all.

What Trump has done is nothing to do with 'reciprocal' tariffs. He has looked at trade imbalances and come up with a second grade formula to try to eradicate them. Not for one moment has any actual thought gone into working out how the trading relationships are structured or have come about, hence the lunacy of the Falklands and Lesotho situations, let alone the penguins on Heard and MacDonald Islands.

He is totally financially illiterate.

Yes and yes. And so are the fuckwit acolytes he has in his Cabinet. He thinks that tariffs are a solution to a problem, but hasn't a clue as to what they are or how they work.

Um, plenty of us have said this is sinister rather than just stupid.

Poor attempt at a strawman but it's not that black and white though (which I'm sure you already know).  Even your most rabid free marketeer would recognise that tariffs can be useful and should be used in certain situations.  Question is the extent and application of them rather than whether tariffs are inherently "good" or "bad".

The EU ones tend to be focused and can at least be explained by economic theory. They are also discussed openly in advance, in public debates, and would usually be applied with a decent lead time to allow business to adjust.

Contrast with the US announcement with hardly any implementation period, based on obvious lies about the justification, and no evidence of cogent economic thought.

China introduces 34% tariff on US imports.

Presumably Trump will thank them, because yesterday he was claiming they impose a 67% tariff.

I've just looked. I wish I hadn't. Horrific.

In other news, cracking response from China. Hard to understand how Trump could take issue with 54% tariffs being met with 54% tariffs. That's actual reciprocation, not his made up bullshit.

In defence of Tariffs
They raise prices, slow economic growth, cut profits, increase unemployment, worsen inequality, diminish productivity and increase global tensions.
Other than that, they are fine.

Interesting to note that Trump used to complain that Obama took occasional time off to play golf.

Trump seems to have forgotten that now and seems to fly from Washington to Florida to play golf most weekends, at considerable financial cost to the US tax payer, when the expenses of security, aero fuel etc etc are taken into account.

Good old Donnie is en route for another game of golf as we speak.

Just read a an opinion that Donald has imposed his tariffs knowing that the stock markets would plummet. His rich mates buy up a load of cheap shares, Donald then has a change of heart, removes or reduces tariffs and the markets come back up and his mates get even richer.

ICE admit this man was deported by an "administrative error", they have no documents or evidence to show he has done anything wrong, their lawyers stood up in Court and said his deportation was unjustified, but there in no intention of bringing him back to the US, which is a direct violation of a Court order issued by a Judge the White House is now attacking as a "Marxist" rather than admitting their error.

The White House says that because the man is now in El Salvador, the Judge has no jurisdiction to order his return.

I have been thoroughly enjoying the contributions on this thread from the forum’s self proclaimed greatest intellect. He does seem to be struggling with issues that are not necessarily mutually exclusive however. For example, it is entirely possible for Donald Trump and his actions to be motivated by the fact that he is both “thick” and “sinister”.

So no truth in the rumour that Trump is going to apply a 50% tariff on football forums in the UK because they are saying nasty things about him then?

You really do love a conspiracy theory don’t you nic? Tell me, what can we do on TSW to stop Trump in his tracks. If we have the power, tell us how to harness it please.

Interesting. I mean yes, he is rude and obnoxious and a complete prick, especially the way he tries to talk down to her, BUT, BBC news people do interrupt, they are irritating.  I can't remember the last time I watched a BBC news interview and didn't say "For gods sake, stop interrupting and let them speak"!

Seems like we’re all fucked then? The idyllic, rewarding, steadily improving and financially secure lives we’ve all been living these  last 17 years or so have come to an abrupt end 😞
