Although we just had a Labour govt elected after 14 years although UK is an outlier in general move towards electing populist parties.
The terms Far right and fascism get thrown around very loosely and often incorrectly so akin to the boy that cried wolf. Melloni is not the next Hitler although woudl never know it from hysteria when she got elected,

Labour got a huge majority on less than 40% of the vote, so certainly unrepresentative. Agree about Meloni, much more pragmatic than the press would have had you believe.

I’m not normally a fan of Jones but he has a point here.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/jan/14/young-people-democracy-dictators-fascism-war-far-right

Liberal and left ideologies are being drowned out more and more through social media platforms which in turn is being amplified by the many right leaning main media outlets. When the most powerful nation in the Western world reelects someone who tried to overturn the result of the previous election, has committed numerous felonies and decides that the “truth” is what he says it is, then we are already in an Orwellian world. Throw Musk and Zuckerberg into the mix and it just adds more fuel to the fire.

The younger generations used to stand up against dictatorial bullshit. It seems now greater numbers are falling for it. Jones makes the point that the spectre of fascism from the 1930’s is vanishing from the younger generations now and he is right. The 60’s generation would not have stood by and let the likes Trump, Musk, Farage etc. get away with their bullshit now. It doesn’t bode well for the future.

In the recent past we've had LBC, the Guardian, James O'brien and now Little Owen Jones. Is that a bingo?

Given the state of the main political parties in most countries, more obsessed either with image or slagging each other off; the perception that election results fail to proportionately represent the spread of political views, or that in many constituencies your vote is wasted as the local result is effectively predetermined, is it any wonder that "Democracy" is losing it's appeal.

That's why I'm not bothered about the rise of Reform. Farage is a cunt but at least they support PR.

As it currently stands both Labour and the Tories are about as popular as anal polyps so hopefully if enough Lib Dems and Reform MPs get elected next time around we might actually get some progress.

I am not sure if Meloni was depicted as the new Hitler but she certainly has a neo fascist background. So far she has not lived up to the negative expectations that were feared given her background. So far.

The rise of populism is still a problem though. I have posted this before.

How would the 60s generation stood up to Musk? He just has a platform that is amplified by journalists that is a new thing never around previously. Too much excitement about him and how he governs the news agenda. 200million followers on Twitter isn’t actual power. Majority think he’s a cunt and he isn’t dictating how they think. Do you think there should be students out with placards saying ‘Down with Musk’? Don’t know why I bother asking though as you won’t bother debating

He's not interested in debating.  I think he's very happy scaring himself about the far right bogeyman that he hears about in his social media echo chamber.

Serious question SOG why do you post?

all you do is either post links to about 3 different news sources, rant about the far right or call anyone who disagrees with you names or make digs often completely unprovoked

Most people on here offer something to this place whereas you offer literally nothing. Even in the past when you used to preach piously you at least offered an opinion even if most laughed at it or rolled their eyes, “here he goes again” These days you’ve become a joke. You can’t even have a discussion with you as it very quickly ending up with you ranting or playing the victim soon as things don’t go your way. Even the threads you start with have potential are thinly veiled digs at other posters.

you aren’t winning saintsweb, if you’re trying to be a wind up merchant you’re failing spectacularly, if you think your endless links are “gotcha” moments you’re completely wrong. I don’t really get why you devote so much of your life to something you offer so little too. It’s all a bit tragic

In the build up to what will be a very happy day for me on Monday and a great one for the world, I have come out of retirement to shamelessly bait the lefties on here, who will shortly be owned by the greatest President, the US has ever had. Much better than that, he will toy with Starmer, Lammy and the rest of the Marxist crew who, as I told you all at the time, will turn our once great country into Venezuela, minus the sun and oil.

I enjoyed two recent videos from Trump, here and here. Watch the 2nd one from 59'51" to appreciate the intellect of the President elect.

A golden age for the US and rapid decline for the UK.

Again I ask, when are you fucking off to Trump land ? After all, you wouldn't want to stay here for the 'rapid decline', would you ?

Or are you just another mouthy fraud ?

St Helens man was the one who used to be able to do his weekly shop in Tesco in less than 7 minutes on a sunday morning. 🤣

It's a few years ago but I have the PMs from the time when he was requesting personal details. Really didn't like people looking into his personal details and what he did for a job.

Donny is claiming he sorted out Gaza and cancelled the Chagos deal, all before he even got to the White House.

Just Ukraine to sort by the end of next week and he can put his feet up for four years I guess.

You can say what you like about Trump but he knows how to end a war

To be fair, he pretty much has. Gaza should have been done months ago, and it's no coincidence it's happened now. Directly of indirectly he's got it over the line. We've confirmed that Chagos has stalled pending his input. Ukraine won't take long.

I'm a hater, but there is no doubt about the man's influence. Throwing his weight around and getting results before he's got the keys to the door is a sign of things to come. Let's see who controls the Panama canal this time next year, and whether there's a McDonald's and Taco Bell in downtown Nuuk.

Looks like your case of Trump Derangement Syndrome is slowly receding. I'm sure there'll still be a hard core, on this liberal, mong-board, hell hole, who'd prefer thousands of deaths in Ukraine and Gaza, rather than having a US President they don't like, in a country where they get no vote. As they say in that wonderful. right-wing, woke-free country, "Go figure".

Trump claiming credit for something he wasn't directly involved in, in the same way as he forgo thatt he negotiated the peace deal with the Taliban in Afghanistan. Of course, a peace deal in the Middle East is a good thing, but we will have to see if it actually solves any of the underlying issues in the region. As for Ukraine, unfortunately any deal is likely to sell Ukraine short and give Putin enough to claim his invasion was justified, ( not that anything short of NATO boots on the ground would likely give any other outcome ).

I suspect that Trump will come in full of bull and bluster,  throwing his weight around and upsetting lots of people. But then reality will set in and things will tone down as the US economy fails to meet the fanciful targets he has set, ( zero inflation and massive tariffs ), international relations have to take account of other countries' priorities, and his autocratic tech partners start to realise they aren't in control of all of his strings.

Suggesting that this deal has nothing to do with the fact that Trump is going to be president is disengenuous in the extreme. Of course it has to do with him.

Of course the timing is down to the change in President but it could be more down to Biden wanting to get it sorted before he left or Netanyahu wanting to suck up to the next President than Trump's negotiating skills.

It's obviously good news so credit to Trump if it is his doing - we will have to wait and see how well he gets on with delivering a lasting peace and two state solution now.

If it was a choice between having to sit at an England game next one of the two Johns - Misselbrook or Westwood - I’d actually have to take a nose peg to the match and blank out the skate tattoos.

Alcohol-wise not much between them.
