badgerx16 Posted March 12 Posted March 12 Trump has introduced his tariffs under the National Emergencies Act. Under that Act, Congress has the power to declare the "emergency" has ended, and if a motion is so proposed it has to be debated within 15 days. Knowing that many Republicans are actually ideologically opposed to tariffs the Democrats have announced they will submit just such a motion, thereby forcing the Republicans into a choice they really don't want to make. To counter this, and avoid this moral dilemma, the Republicans have passed their own resolution, declaring that the remainder of the 119th Congress will count as 1 day. 2
aintforever Posted March 12 Posted March 12 Politics over there is completely fucked. I don’t usually take much notice of it but had a look on X the other day and it’s polarised to the point where rational debate is just impossible. Trump could literally say anything and some people will support it because it’s their side, and vice-versa. It’s like the Brexit situation we had here but on steroids. I wouldn’t be surprised if Trumps whole stance on Ukraine is shaped by the fact that Biden supported Kiev. Whatever the Democrats thought and did has to be wrong, actual facts are irrelevant. I guess they have always had the two party thing over there but I expect the whole thing has been turned toxic by social media. 1

There’s been quite a few interviews with long-time US commentators connected with the GOP (or some used to be) on Times Radio expounding this exact line of thinking. Add in what your hear from the likes of Bolton and Scaramucci who have actually worked for Trump about everything going back to being purely about Trump, and it makes more sense than conspiracy theories about Agent Trump. 1

Yeah I don't think I buy much American products but there's loads of sort of products and services such as: Amazon, Netflix (plus other streaming), Exxon, Microsoft, probably pretty much every social media excluding TikTok, Apple, eBay, For the record I don't actually use much of the above - just trying to list American goods and services outside of the usual grocery type purchases.

badgerx16 Posted March 14 Posted March 14 (edited) A Judge in California and another in Maryland have instructed Federal agencies to reinstate workers dismissed through DOGE's purges. Donnie has also issued Executive Orders targeting two law firms, one associated with Hillary Clinton's Presidential election campaign, and the other associated with one of the prosecutors who drew up legal cases against Trump. Both firms are deemed to be risks to national security, although another Judge has revoked the Order against the first firm. Edited March 14 by badgerx16

badgerx16 Posted March 15 Posted March 15 Trump corrupt ?.......No way....... ( From the Wall Street Journal ); Representatives of President Trump’s family have held talks to take a financial stake in the U.S. arm of crypto exchange Binance, according to people familiar with the matter, a move that would put Trump in business with the firm that pleaded guilty in 2023 to violating anti-money-laundering requirements. At the same time, Binance’s billionaire founder, Changpeng Zhao—who served four months in prison after pleading guilty to a related charge—has been pushing for the Trump administration to grant him a pardon, people familiar with the matter said. Zhao, widely known as CZ, remains Binance’s largest shareholder. 1

Of all things they’ve done since January, that ethically, morally, on a pure human being level is the most disgusting. Pure white supremacy, anyone from a minority who voted for this should make an apology to Charles C Rogers’s family and a donation for a memorial wherever he lived. That’s the sort of behaviour the KKK are known for. 1

America is on the precipice here as a democratic nation. It’s a serious doubt whether they can make it to the mid-terms with that status intact, if those elections don’t happen we are looking at the country breaking up. 1

There’s still some way to go but the omens are not positive at all. The mid-terms happening freely and fairly in Nov 2026 are the acid test for me. If not, Americans are going to have to go to civil war with the GOP. A tanked economy might be a driver. What I suspect might happen is that some of the movers and shakers behind the Lincoln Project might be joined by GOP alumunus and corporate backers outside of Trump and the Demi’s circles to form a shadow pro-business, centre right party which can build in parallel and replace MAGA over time. GOP might end up like the BNP and National Front in this country as a defunct party, but probably a white supremacist sect rather than de-registered. Edited March 17 by Gloucester Saint

Something similar happened in America in the 1850s. The old Whig party disappeared and was superceded by the Republican party. Civil war shortly followed. 😕

The Mail is an odious far right propaganda sheet. The Guardian and Observer might be centre/left leaning, but let’s not pretend that they are a centre/left version of the Mail. The Mail has now become to the Middle Classes what The Sun used to be to the Working Classes - a purveyor of red meat to feed their prejudices. Edited March 17 by sadoldgit 4
