Good article here on why car tariffs are nonsense. There’s a trade imbalance because 4 litre gas guzzlers don’t fit around Europe streets with 15th century buildings. Some of the corners around here are a prime example unless you want to collide with honey coloured stone. Tariffs also stifle innovation, look at how lazy BMC became pre-Common Market membership

If Americans made better compacts with good automatic transmissions that were durable like Japanese and German models, I’d be open to buying one https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cq8kn5v37wxo

Tesla European sales down. China buying soya beans from South America rather than Iowa. Canadians boycotting American goods. Perhaps the best way to confront Trump is for consumers like us to consciously avoid buying American items. Hurt them in their pockets.

It will not be easy. No more Amazon. Avoid Heinz, Kelloggs, Gillette and other US brands. You have to be knowledgeable to find alternatives  but there is a growing campaign in Canada to avoid American produced items / American companies. Lets do likewise here.

National Parks as well https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/feb/15/us-forest-service-national-park-service-layoffs

Fire mitigation will be very difficult and the parks left in a far worse state. Mind you, anyone wanting to visit America over the next 4 years for leisure (work is different) has to be a MAGA supporter.

Who would have thought there was so much corruption in the National Parks Service ?

"The US government is trying to bring back nuclear safety employees it fired on Thursday, but is struggling to let them know they should return to work, NBC News has reported.

The National Nuclear Security Administration workers were among hundreds of employees in the energy department who received termination letters.

An email obtained by NBC said the letters for some NNSA employees "are being rescinded, but we do not have a good way to get in touch with those personnel"."

I beg to differ. He's a Democrat, as is Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Elon Musk. I mean, calling him a Republican is like calling David Cameron and Rishi Sunak Conservatives.

Furthermore, Starmer, Reeves and Milliband are all Marxists, as I told the Labour sheep on this board, prior to the election. I mean, it's obvious to someone with any brain, like recognising that a male has a penis and should not be allowed in female only spaces or participating in female only sports.

Trump is neither a Republican or Democrat. He's a businessman and is the reason the US will soon make the UK look like a corrupt, bankrupt and third rate country, it is becoming. Drill, baby, drill...

Trump is an Oompa-Loompa man-baby with many bankruptcies and failed businesses behind him. He is corrupt, and has no respect for Law or democracy, he just likes throwing his substantial weight around whilst throwing hissy fits of a magnitude my 4 year old granddaughter can only dream of.

He is a liar, a braggart, and the archetypical playground bully, no wonder you look up to him.

Anyone else listen to the speech by JD Vance? His general points about clamping down on freedom of speech, paying more for defence and leaders not listening to the public about immigration were well made I thought and very difficult to dispute.

Pete Hegseth, Fox News weekend show host and cosplay Secretary of Defense ( sic ), having stated at the Munich conference that Ukraine will have to give up plans to join NATO, and has no chance of reclaiming it's 2014 borders, was asked about what concessions Russia might have to give in the peace negotiations. He completely ducked the question.

Keith Kellog had a bit to say in Munich, but was equally vague, pointing to financial concessions:

"So what does (Russian President Vladimir Putin) have to give up? Well maybe he'll give up his oil revenue and we'll force him to do it, because what you do is start employing sanctions that break the economic back," Kellogg said. "These are the things you can do."

Earlier in the discussion, Kellogg said that both Ukraine and Russia would have to make concessions to end the war.

"When you say concessions, of course they're concessions that both sides are going to have to give," Kellogg said, without specifying what concessions the countries would have to make.

The US will get what's in it's interests in this, leaving Ukraine out to dry, and Europe either accepting it or fronting up to Russia. This is a pretty significant moment.

Paying more on defence made sense but the free speech thing was just weird, especially as it’s their Russian mates who bang people up who speak out against the government and Putin who kills his political opponents.

The only people at the conference who applauded Vance were the US delegation. The rest just sat back in stunned silence.

Russia definitely have a problem with free speech. So do we. I'd say it's more important for the West to keep the values that make them the best places to live in the world rather than Russia who has never had freedom.

He was right on the money about clamping down on free speech. Trump is working hard on that.

He also showed his wit too. “And trust me, I say this with all humor,” he said. “If American democracy can survive 10 years of Greta Thunburg scolding, you guys can survive a few months of Elon Musk.”

It was met with roars of laughter from the audience.

Not. You could hear a pin drop.

Off the top of my head: sending police around to social media users for content that is not illegal, non crime hate incidents, arresting someone for standing and silently praying, a man last week arrested for burning a quaran, labour supposedly adopting a definition of Islamophobia containing 'perceived Muslimness' which many people believe amounts to a blasphemy law, the online safety act that propose the removal of content deemed 'legal but harmful'.

I'm sure there's more but that will do for starters.

I would say that Russia is not dictating our almost non-existent immigration policy..for both legal and illegal migration.

Lots of talk about upping our Defence Spending to 2.5%.... 2.5% is pittance really, just as we have retired 2 major warships and *cough* about to formally retire some more (early). The Army is almost completely hollow and the air force have so few front line assets, it is now embarrassing for an apparent 1st world nation.

The treat of terrorism is obviously serious and needs to be addressed. Not sure that could be classed as more if a threat to Europe than Russia. Are you saying that we should spend money on immigration control and counter terrorism police instead of the armed forces?

He's been confused by BRICS for weeks. The last blunder was suggesting Spain was in the group. Mad that every Biden slip-up was pounced upon but every time this guy opens his mouth he's 'negotiating' or more likely, trying to create as many distractions as possible while being a corrupt bastard

We can barely afford the 2.5% on the forces - how much more do you want to spend on counter terrorism instead?

Also, are Islamist terror attacks even on the rise? It would be interesting to see the stats but there definitely seemed to be more around the time when we were invading Iraq and dealing with Afghanistan.

I didn't actually mention anything about Russia in my post I was responding to the question about how free speech is threatened in the UK. I would say it probably depends what you mean by threat. I don't feel particularly threatened by Russia on a personal level but certainly on the international stage they are undoubtedly a larger threat. The individual intimidated by the police or subject to arrest for a social media post probably feels a personal threat from the UK.

I'd also say that the levels of immigration is a fairly large immediate threat to my way of life and the request by a majority to have that reduced has been ignored for years.

Obviously it’s about what you prioritise as there is not a magic money tree. Every billion spent on combating this massive threat from within is a billion that could be spent on our armed forces.

It's a political choice what we spend our money on. We could if we chose to spend more on defence and immigration defence and make spending in other areas less of a priority than it is at present if we wanted to.

Of course it is. I would up spending on our army and air force over immigration control personally. Stopping the boats is a problem but the vast majority of immigration is legal so the best way to bring the numbers down is dealing with that.

I'd increase military spending, push pro family policies to try to increase the birth rate, have much stricter policies around people coming here and adapting to the existing culture, I'd look to reduce the burden of immigration both legal and illegal and part of that would involve spending on immigration control. I'd reduce spending in other areas I consider to be less important in order to fund it.
