I thought we played really well for the majority of the match. Some very stupid mistakes as the team tired, but generally good, especially 1st half. Sterling the exception, obviously.

Thought first half was pretty dire by both sides.

England had 2 shots on target all game & one of those was a penalty.

We had patches, but we weren't great. The way we lost the grip after we took the lead wasn't great. Let's be honest, Columbia were there for the taking tonight, they didn't have much apart from their interesting tactics. So obviously it's euphoric that we actually won a shoot out, but it wasn't a perfomance i was hoping or expecting to see.

Good result and I feel the only team that wanted to play football won however concerning that we didn’t create many chances. Also Vardy not stepping up for a penalty , can he be relied upon? Alli again limited think Loftus Cheek would have improved us?

I can always handle watching Saints at St Mary’s or on TV fairly well. The real anxiety and heart palpitations only really come from listening to them play through radio. Well that game nearly finished me off! I would’ve been more than happy to win that one nil but f*ck me I wouldn’t be buzzing like this if we had. I haven’t lost my sh*t like that over an England game ( or probably any game ) since Rickie mugged off the Scots. Really well deserved. Columbia were a disgrace really and will only be remembered as cheating b*stards that got what they deserved. England to knock out Russia and bring it home!

Whatever momentum we might have lost against Belgium, that is one hell of a curse we've just broken.

The belief in the England team will be immense after that.

That felt like a complete exorcism tbh. In a way better to win like that than see out the 1 nil. **** these Colombians anyway, really disappointing the way they played that.

What's that: one goal from open play all tournament (Lingard's screamer against Panama)?
The tactics don't make any sense. Lingard and Alli run away from the ball, while the other midfielder Henderson passes backwards. The only players passing forwards are the defenders.

And so Kane and Sterling drop deep to try and create... for no-one, as they're meant to be our spearheads.

We've created FA from open play, and I don't see that trend changing against a well organised Sweden team.

Portugal won the euros by creating next to FA all tournament. They stuck in games and scraped through, much like us so far (Panama aside)

For me, Rashford need to start, probably ahead of sterling (although lingard was poor tonight, IMO) and we need to bring in Loftus-Cheek.

RLC, is the only CM in our squad that will pick the ball up, turn and run at people. Not sure Alli is fit as he’s been very poor, but that being said he didn’t have a great season all together IMO.

I’m so glad we beat them today. Absolutely disgusting team.

Never will we get a better chance of getting to the World Cup final, I’m still buzzing.

Guess the point is to have the pace of lingard, sterling and alli making runs beyond Kane or receiving the ball and running at players. That movement is certainly unsettling and is an improvement previous England sides which were incredibly rigid. But without the technical polish of an Eriksen (given the obvious parallels with the Spurs setup), it's all a bit headless and frenetic.

Winston Churchill, 1945:

Well, we got the win, but only just. There were times when you guys looked knackered and might not win. You bunch of total tossers! You should have been in complete charge for the whole war and totally dominated them like I did with the fuzzy wuzzies.

I'm just glad we practiced our firing squad.

Very understandable prediction given our appalling history in that respect. However, by all accounts Southgate is taking penalty practice very seriously, unlike the previous generation of moronic English managers. Not that it guarantees anything if it gets to a shootout, but I think this time we may actually have a chance.

Well done Gareth. Even our one miss was a terrific save.

This time next week you won't be joking about firing squads. Bacca is probably writing his will as we speak.

Is there anyone still saying we should have gone all out against Belgium.

Sweden or Brazil, let me think. Which one do we want?

There is taking this place far too seriously and just being downright sad. Not to mention insecure.

When we win the final no doubt you will remember it in years to come with annoyance at how people glossed over how we scraped home with an average performance against a team missing their star playmaker in the last 16 so didn’t really tear up the competition.

You said in Italia 90 (Semi-final) and Euro 96 (Semi final) England underachieved and as far as you're concerned if we don't win the whole thing we might as well have gone home in the group stage like Germany.

So I don't really understand why you are crowing about what you can only describe as a poxy old second round win.

We're still three more wins away from getting out of the underachievement zone, right?

who remembers when one or two here said Stephens was superior to Maguire!!

Has something happened to disprove that? Don’t think anyone performed particularly well in yesterday’s game? Need to improve 3-4x to get something on Saturday.

Maguire was very good and obviously infinitely better than our fourth/fifth choice CB. So that happened.

It wasn’t a case of wanting Brazil or Sweden. Some people wanted us to put out a strong team hopefully to win the group and keep the momentum going. If you listened to the pundits, some agreed, some didn’t.

If we'd put out a strong team against Belgium and had tired players facing the Japanese in the hottest stadium in the competition, we'd almost certainly have lost.

The Japanese would have played us off the park as they did to Belgium, and we don't have anyone like Fellaini to batter their defence down.

One thing to consider is Sweden will see Saturday as an excellent chance of reaching the semi final, just as much as England.

They are solid and structured and will spoil. They also have tremendous team spirit.

I'm calling this a 50/50 game of few chances. England to win in ET.

Not sure which of those comments is the most looney...

Trippier has been exceptional. Not sure how or why you would argue against that.

So much hate for the team on here. Its the first time I've enjoyed watching England since the 2002 W/C, and I wont let you buzzkills ruin it for me ffs!

England did pretty well considering that Henderson was way off and Sterling is very wasteful. Pity we've no real alternative to Henderson available because he looks shot. With Lustig suspended for Sweden in the next game I might start Rashford.
