Blimey.

Belgium looked dead and buried there, but their first goal going in by millimetres past the bar (probably not meant?) and suddenly they had belief again. Then they dragged themselves back into it.

Can't help but feel for Japan after that.

Fine margins.

I reckon this is the best World Cup I've ever watched personally.

Rubbish that Martinez isn’t he!

Incredibly, you know from the start Japan will be ****e at defending crosses, tries to be cocky and out football them, got schooled for 70 odd mins until he realised and chucked on fellaini last ditch. Terrible manager.

Really starting to dislike this Belgium team, they remind me so much of England over the last 26 odd years. Arrogant, couldn't care less, strolling around as if they were entitled to the win, only woke up when 2 down and the only really decent move they put together came in the 94th min and was the winning goal.

Guys like Lukaku, De Bruyne and Hazard who tear up the prem were bang average. Play like that in the next round you lazy, entitled gits and Brazil will hand you a new one.

Gutted for Japan, the moral victors.

That's an astonishing fact - first time a team have come back from 2-0 to win in the WC knockouts since 1970.
The 'Peter Bonnetti' game if I recall correctly.

Utter stupidity from Japan. Why are they even trying to swing a high ball into the box from a corner, let alone in the last minute of injury time. Play it short! Shame I was looking forward to extra time.

Yep, absolutely any goodwill they get from being brave and pressing high they lose by some of the worst game management in recent memory. These are professional footballers and they did one of the most amateur things possible so you can't have any sympathy for them.

I reckon the possibility of scoring from a set piece to end the match there gave them a better chance than extra time would have.

Obviously it backfired in the worst possible way, but I wouldn't say it was the wrong call.

The Belgian winner was heartbreaking! Japan were brilliant. Fantastic game.

England would probably have struggled a bit against Japan playing that well.

Whether Colombia tomorrow will be any easier... well we'll just have to wait and see.

If it goes to penalties there's almost no point starting them.

If only you said 1966!!!

Cos its coming home!!!

Yeah, but... the 50 pence I was going to put on it would've paid for my Saintsweb subscription for another year :(
Probably best you decided against then...! [emoji3]

They were never going to score from lumping it in the box from a corner, given the nature of the 2 teams.

Japan were never gonna win in extra time the way the tide was ebbing. They played the right tactic with the corner, but were dealt a cruel blow.

This WC is crazy!!

Dealt a cruel cruel blow, but what class. This is a tweet from a FIFA coordinator

Textbook.

What is “textbook” is slagging the manager off for the first 65 minutes when his team were poor and then not giving him any credit when he made the decisions which won his team the game. Whatever you think of Martinez, he made the right calls at the right time and if Belgium do make the final, it won’t be despite him. I don’t think they will beat Brazil though, and no doubt it will be all his fault.

Yoshida did us proud and received many mentions in the commentary for his excellent defensive work. To my mind, Japan played some of the best football of the tournament. Their control of the ball was outstanding, their passing and movement very intelligent. Ultimately they were undone by Belgium's brute thugs like Fellaini, rather than the skillful players like Hazard and De Bruyne, who they had in their pocket for most of the match, closing them down and often dispossessing them of the ball.

Indeed. Would be hailed as an excellent signing if we were buying him on the back of his performances in this world cup.
