Pilchards Posted 1 May, 2018 Posted 1 May, 2018 I keep hearing about 2005 and that it’s all happening again. Liverpool won the champions league in 2005 and look likely to this year. What are the others?
Give it to Ron Posted 1 May, 2018 Posted 1 May, 2018 2 - 0 up against Villa lost 3-2 - see Chelsea 2 up against Middlesboro drew 2-2 - see Watford Blackburn away lost 3 -0 - see Newcastle/West Ham games I thought we would get a result Stretching the Norwich win to the Bournemouth win as its the hope that kills you Oh this is not real.....obviously
Pamplemousse Posted 1 May, 2018 Posted 1 May, 2018 We haven't lost 4-1 to anyone yet, but we are visiting Everton on Saturday, a decrepit old ground with fans who bang on about history as if its relevant, so maybe that is where the parallels will lie!!
saintwbu Posted 1 May, 2018 Posted 1 May, 2018 The Norwich/Bournemouth wins were 30th and 28th April respectively if you're looking for parallels between home wins that gave us hope when all seemed lost
Pilchards Posted 1 May, 2018 Author Posted 1 May, 2018 We played a Manchester team last game of the season and lost.
ericb Posted 1 May, 2018 Posted 1 May, 2018 The Norwich/Bournemouth wins were 30th and 28th April respectively if you're looking for parallels between home wins that gave us hope when all seemed lost Who's main stand was designed by Archibald Leitch too...
Bourne Valley Saint Posted 1 May, 2018 Posted 1 May, 2018 A good cup run that ended in the quarter finals rather than the semi finals!
Sheaf Saint Posted 1 May, 2018 Posted 1 May, 2018 I went to the Everton away game in 2004/05. We lost 0-1.
Bad Wolf Posted 1 May, 2018 Posted 1 May, 2018 A good cup run that ended in the quarter finals rather than the semi finals! Knocked out of the League Cup by a Championship team who's names begin with W too. Starting to clutch at straws a bit here but I think that's what this thread is for.
Mr Saints Posted 1 May, 2018 Posted 1 May, 2018 Although at least Lowe would have got rid of Pellegrino months ago.
Bad Wolf Posted 1 May, 2018 Posted 1 May, 2018 Although at least Lowe would have got rid of Pellegrino months ago. Lowe would have pulled the trigger after the Burnley game IMO.
mrfahaji Posted 1 May, 2018 Posted 1 May, 2018 A Manchester club at home on the last day again. Who had already won the league (I think?), they weren’t exactly up for it, we had a chance but ultimately they were just better than us. Can see a similar thing happening with City.
GGalpin Posted 1 May, 2018 Posted 1 May, 2018 Who had already won the league (I think?), they weren’t exactly up for it, we had a chance but ultimately they were just better than us. Can see a similar thing happening with City. Chelsea won the league that year, first year with Mourinho

Can see a similar thing happening with City. Well that twitchy bast8rd didnt help leaving Kevin Phillips on the bench in place of Brett Ormerod.
lickierambert Posted 1 May, 2018 Posted 1 May, 2018 The league was won with a record points total, and that team went out to Liverpool in the Champions League
Pamplemousse Posted 1 May, 2018 Posted 1 May, 2018 Although at least Lowe would have got rid of Pellegrino months ago. That's another parallel though, we kept on to Wigley for far too long.
Bad Wolf Posted 1 May, 2018 Posted 1 May, 2018 That's another parallel though, we kept on to Wigley for far too long. I think it would have been harsh to sack Wigley earlier with the injuries he had.
Dalek2003 Posted 1 May, 2018 Posted 1 May, 2018 I think it would have been harsh to sack Wigley earlier with the injuries he had. Hoddle should have been the manager. The damage was done when he was not appointed in the Spring of 2004.

Stud mark of doom Posted 1 May, 2018 Posted 1 May, 2018 Very lucky 3 2 win in the opening hone game of the season, with dodgy pen given to us. (Blackburn/West Ham)
Bad Wolf Posted 1 May, 2018 Posted 1 May, 2018 Very lucky 3 2 win in the opening hone game of the season, with dodgy pen given to us. (Blackburn/West Ham) Never thought of that one. Wern't both pens in stoppage time too?
RedArmy Posted 2 May, 2018 Posted 2 May, 2018 Very lucky 3 2 win in the opening hone game of the season, with dodgy pen given to us. (Blackburn/West Ham)Opening home game was 0-0 against Swansea
Supersubpuckett Posted 2 May, 2018 Posted 2 May, 2018 How about any parallels to the seasons we managed to stay up - you'll find anything in stats if you look hard enough.
Pamplemousse Posted 2 May, 2018 Posted 2 May, 2018 Opening home game was 0-0 against Swansea That's that then, confirmed we are staying up!
mrfahaji Posted 2 May, 2018 Posted 2 May, 2018 Chelsea won the league that year, first year with Mourinho Right you are. I just recall United not having anything to play for, but probably because Chelsea wrapped up the league way before.
mikec Posted 2 May, 2018 Posted 2 May, 2018 Right you are. I just recall United not having anything to play for, but probably because Chelsea wrapped up the league way before. They had nothing to play for in the league, but they had an FA Cup final the following week so the hope was they would rest some key players. I remember my heart sinking when I heard the line-up before the game - Rooney, Giggs, Van Nistolroy and so on. I think Fergie really wanted to send us down that day.
Stud mark of doom Posted 2 May, 2018 Posted 2 May, 2018 Very lucky 3 2 win in the second game of the season, with dodgy pen given to us. (Blackburn/West Ham)
Bad Wolf Posted 2 May, 2018 Posted 2 May, 2018 Sold our talisman in January (VVD and Beattie) Didn't we also sign a Dutch defender that season who turned out to be awful? His name escapes me. Left sided I think.
CB Fry Posted 2 May, 2018 Posted 2 May, 2018 Sold our talisman in January (VVD and Beattie) Didn't we also sign a Dutch defender that season who turned out to be awful? His name escapes me. Left sided I think.Jelle Van Damme.
Colinjb Posted 2 May, 2018 Posted 2 May, 2018 Jelle Van Damme. Yep. Later ended up at Wolves. I would submit an 'honourable' mention for Andreas Jakobsson too.
Give it to Ron Posted 2 May, 2018 Posted 2 May, 2018 Yep. Later ended up at Wolves. I would submit an 'honourable' mention for Andreas Jakobsson too. That what cost us the game v Villa when we were 2 up Andreas had Carlton Cole in his pocket - he got concussion I think and that twitch bast8rd brought on Calum useless Davenport instead of Higgy. Cole then ran riot yet another genius Redkrapp decision
Lighthouse Posted 2 May, 2018 Posted 2 May, 2018 I think it would have been harsh to sack Wigley earlier with the injuries he had. It was nuts to appoint him in the first place, well out of his depth.
Dalek2003 Posted 2 May, 2018 Posted 2 May, 2018 It was nuts to appoint him in the first place, well out of his depth. Bizzare decision.
St.Patrik Posted 2 May, 2018 Posted 2 May, 2018 Van Damned was from Belgium so we are safe there as well. Cool name but that’s all about him to.
saints-cris Posted 3 May, 2018 Posted 3 May, 2018 Is anyone else worried about a re-run of the Marcus Bent moment? Similar time in the season. Playing Everton, live on Sky, we desperately need the points and they have nothing to play for.. Eek.
Sergei Gotsmanov Posted 3 May, 2018 Posted 3 May, 2018 2 - 0 up against Villa lost 3-2 - see Chelsea 2 up against Middlesboro drew 2-2 - see Watford Blackburn away lost 3 -0 - see Newcastle/West Ham games I thought we would get a result Stretching the Norwich win to the Bournemouth win as its the hope that kills you Oh this is not real.....obviously The Bournemouth game really felt like the Norwich game!
SW5 SAINT Posted 3 May, 2018 Posted 3 May, 2018 Although at least Lowe would have got rid of Pellegrino months ago. No he wouldn't , think how long he persevered when Wigley was clearly way out of his depth. In fact the Wigley Pellegrino thing is yet another parallel......
aintforever Posted 3 May, 2018 Posted 3 May, 2018 No he wouldn't , think how long he persevered when Wigley was clearly way out of his depth. In fact the Wigley Pellegrino thing is yet another parallel...... To be fair Lowe sacked him early December which at least gave the next manager a bit of a chance to change things. Wigley was a worse appointment but keeping Pelligrino on until after the window shuts and letting him blow £20mill on one of his mates - then sacking him has to rate as the worst decision ever made at SFC.
MongoNeil Posted 3 May, 2018 Posted 3 May, 2018 Not only did we sack a manager that was a bit of an experiment, we replaced him with a 'proper British' manager that 'knows the league' etc etc... What's scary is that I remember saying to my other half at the start of the season that this season had parallels with 2005. That was based on our fixture list with an easier start to the season and a harder run-in. It's written in the stars that we're going down, or something like that. As someone said earlier, you can read anything in statistics if you look hard enough (a bit like the stars then).
John Boy Saint Posted 3 May, 2018 Posted 3 May, 2018 Reading this I might as well put a smile on my face and look up the winning lottery ticket numbers for the corresponding weekends of Doom back in 2005................worth a punt with so many similarities running like those Final Destination films :p
Saint Garrett Posted 3 May, 2018 Posted 3 May, 2018 Jelle Van Damme. Still playing in the MLS I believe....LA Galaxy.
USA SaintsFan Posted 4 May, 2018 Posted 4 May, 2018 Still playing in the MLS I believe....LA Galaxy. He left Galaxy, to go back to Belgium. FWIW he is a nasty ****. Arrogant, disrespectful, and allegedly racist. (I may be biased, as I support Galaxy's rivals )
Pilchards Posted 4 May, 2018 Author Posted 4 May, 2018 Reading this I might as well put a smile on my face and look up the winning lottery ticket numbers for the corresponding weekends of Doom back in 2005................worth a punt with so many similarities running like those Final Destination films :p They were 12, 18, 22, 33, 43, 48 and the bonus ball was 1. I remember them well as my uncle won it and tried to buy Portsmouth football club that summer. It’s amazing what you got for a tenner back then!
edprice1984 Posted 4 May, 2018 Posted 4 May, 2018 I have never wanted to punch someone as much as I did when Marcus Bent scored. Everton fan at uni who was giving it the big one before the game, very very quiet until Bent smashed in the equaliser. I am pretty sure someone had to restrain me. There are parallels between the seasons, but this time we have better players. Remember Olivier Bernard!

My dad, brother & I didnt say a word to each other for hours. Can remember it so well.
Lighthouse Posted 4 May, 2018 Posted 4 May, 2018 Is anyone else worried about a re-run of the Marcus Bent moment? Similar time in the season. Playing Everton, live on Sky, we desperately need the points and they have nothing to play for.. Eek. They were locked in a battle with their bitter rivals for the final Champions League place. I'd say that's about as much as Everton have had to play for in over 30 years.
