Police presence was hilarious yesterday they were every where from the train station to the stadium. The ones in the Itchen north had batons and riot helmets FFS. Someone must have said derby

There was a lot of internet noise about pompey fans joining in yesterday, which is probably why there was such an over-the-top presence.

Obviously fake news. The bestest fans in the world would have taken over Bury to see their brave boys screw up a chance of the playoffs :D

Two years ago it all kicked off and the police were playing it safe.

Was following the train cordon of Bournemouth fans to the game and the chanting across the road was loud.

Then all of a sudden we all merge together and it all quietens down.

A bunch of softies the lot of us.

Reminds me of a video I saw of Saints fans rattling a fence to get at the Pompey fans. The fence collapse to the surprise of the Saints fans and you could see them trying to put it back up :)

can you imagine we had lost yesterday and Bournemouth had just all but sent us down while securing their own Premiership survival. Some idiots might just have used it as an excuse to cause merry hell and we would have all been criticising the police for not being prepared! Prevention is better than having to deal with the after effects of some riot.

Ah. As I came out the station at 11 o'clock yesterday I joked to a policeman "Gawd, it's only Bournemouth!" with a smile. His reply "we hope so", which I now understand..

I think for 40 years there has been talk of Pompey coming down to join other fans against us. To my knowledge it has never happened.

At Dellhurst park they were going to turn up, and of course didn't although there was 1 of them at the ticket office waiting for his mates, who never turned up lol

That's true, even as a teenager stood on the Milton terraces in the mid 70s I seem to remember the same rumour going round virtually every time we played someone in blue. Never saw anything in the ground, outside may have been a different matter (but I doubt it)

To be fair they'd have had trouble getting into The Dellin those days. It was cash on the day, turnstile operators would have been well trained in checking for webbed fingers when the money as handed over.

I remember well, walking down London Road in the mid 70’s, Saints were playing Chelsea, there were 3 blokes all had a full length umbrella with the points sharpened at the end to a spike. Nasty then, nasty now.

"200 Pompey are supposed to be turning up". lol! Heard that a fair few times (including as Nick says above, at Dellhurst), obviously it's never happened. England v Macedonia they were supposed to be mobbing up and bringing hundreds, in the end there were about 2 dozen hiding in the Parkside Tavern, ended up being escorted to SMS by twice as many OB. Hundreds of Saints (and a few voyeurs from other clubs) waiting for them in/ around St Marys/ Kingsland Market that day/ evening, a fair few genuine nutters I've not seen other than at derby games.

Whether you agree with that sort of thing or not, Pompey have always bottled it/ run when met by equal numbers of Saints. Usually flustered and mumbling something about "scummers... thaaasands ov 'em" all upset as they were lied to by their uncles/ Dad's that Saints would be an easy walkover.

Bournemouth? Bless.

TCWTB was there that night in plain clothes, accompanied by what I took to be a woman. He was sat about 10 rows behind me in the Itchen/Chapel corner and was as quiet as the usual users of that area.

This was the season before he decided to urinate over the away seats. Failing to appreciate it wouldnt affect Saints fans.

TCWTB was sat not far from me for the Macedonia game.

He was singing 'Play up England' until a very fired up Saints fan confronted him and TCWTB was escorted away for his own safety

That was me. I got a ticket off a tout and ended up with a load of Derby in the Itchen/ Chapel corner. JW had his top off and was without his dinlo bell (a steward took it off him before the game and handed it back after with SFC inscribed on it). I'd had a few that day and had it in for the ****. The Derby fellas may have helped with a few "you gonna let him take the p*** fella" type comments so went on down (won't say on here exactly what happened) and just about got away with a lengthy banning order thanks to the stewards that kicked me out saying they wanted to do it themselves. Went to the pub and met a mate that had been kicked out of a different part of the ground for different reasons, got back on the sess' and ended up being punched in the throat up Bedford Place way in a separate incident. Dusted myself down, got a JJ's kebab and went home in one piece.

A happy time of my life haha! Boys will be boys I suppose :mcinnes:

Stay lucky chaps.

I remember that well. In the run they’d been boasting about how they had 100 at the last England away game (Slovakia?) and no scummers anywhere, those they had seen had sh*t themselves and disappeared. They were Going on about what they were going to do in Southampton at the next game. A very small, sorry looking lot hid all day and like you say got escorted by double police through st Mary’s, loads of saints out that day.

There have been loads of other times when they were meant to turn up, the Saturday night before the cup game in 1996, a few London away games, last game at the dell v Brighton there was a rumour they were in the victory and heading up towards the ground which was bullsh*t, can’t remember where that started from but I remember hearing it.

I heard a great story a few years back from a proper old school Chelsea skin from the 70s. Said they (Chelsea) came to Southampton in large numbers for a game in the early 70s and a a group of Pompey were waiting at the station, when they got off they asked if they could join them, they were promptly told where to go and chased all through the station into town. He said They could have beaten linford Christie that day

I think I’m right in saying the did turn up a few times in the 80s though, Southampton common one bank holiday, an u21 game at the Dell and when we played Millwall at the Dell mid 80s. They are all before my time though.

We were sat a couple of blocks away when we suddenly noticed the attention seeking retard and his mate stand up and start making a scene. I think he took a jacket off to reveal his skate clobber which the stewards quickly jumped on but he was happy to take it off and show off his tatts. We chuckled when you moved in behind him and give him some grief and stuck yer boot up his arse and sent him tumbling. Figured you wouldn't have last long before getting pulled out but TCWTB and his buds got Police protection from then and when we went out after he was surrounded by stewards and OB (it looked like Custer's last stand) who arranged for them to be picked up at the stadium.

They did, the U21 game was the night a couple of Wagon lads got jumped by a number of 657 in a park and (won't name him but a few on here would certainly know him) had his faced rearranged in a not very sporting situation. And you had to laugh, they always bang on that the "scummers aint got no mob" but bravely chose to team up with Millwall to have a pop. Did Millwall or the skates feel they needed reinforcements to front the "no mark scummers" that day?

For a younger readers the Painted Wagon was a city centre pub. The blue few did not travel by horses drawn transport

(Embarrassingly that's how I read it the first time)

My old man who is a Geordie (as am I) used to say it was the best pub outside Newcastle, although I think he may be a bit biased as he is a die hard Saints fan.
